Chapter 1
Morning sunlight filtered through the thin curtains, casting soft streams of light across the corner of the room, marking the start of a peaceful new day. In my hand was a mug of warm milk precisely heated to 55°C—the perfect temperature to preserve its sweet richness and gentle warmth.
I gently pushed open the wooden door. Instantly, the faint fragrance of blooming cherry blossoms from the porch drifted in, blending into the cozy atmosphere inside. On the double bed, a small mound beneath the duvet stirred slightly. I stepped closer and bent down to gently shake her shoulder.
"Evelyn, time to wake up. It’s bright outside—almost noon already!"
A delicate, lovely face suddenly popped out from under the blanket. Her platinum blonde hair was messy and unkempt, her pajamas slipped slightly off one shoulder, and her half-open eyes looked thoroughly bewildered.
"What?! It’s noon already?!" she cried out in panic.
Watching the adorable, silly expression of the girl I loved, I couldn't help but chuckle softly. Setting the warm milk down on the wooden nightstand beside the bed, I gave her forehead a light, playful flick.
"I'm just teasing. How else would I get my little sleepyhead awake? I made you warm milk—drink up to warm your stomach."
Evelyn pouted, her sparkling eyes glaring at me in playful annoyance:
"Hmph, you meanie! It wouldn't kill you to let me sleep a little longer..."
"If you sleep any longer, it’ll be afternoon, not noon," I replied, patting her head with a lingering smile. "Alright, go get washed up. I'll go make breakfast."
Evelyn perked up instantly, her eyes lighting up:
"Let me make breakfast for you!"
"Thanks, sweetie. I'll be looking forward to your cooking."
"Hee-hee, leave it to me!"
I walked into the living room and sank into the soft sofa. Resting my feet casually on the wooden table, I leaned my head back against the cushion, closing my eyes to soak in the quiet warmth buzzing in my chest. Soon, cheerful clinking and rustling sounds began to echo from the cozy kitchen.
I leisurely stood up and walked out onto the porch. The morning scenery always held a miraculous healing power. The clear blue sky stretched wide, dotted with fluffy white clouds drifting slowly; birds chirped merrily on the branches, and a refreshing breeze brushed against my cheeks.
Swish.
A delicate cherry blossom petal fluttered through the air and landed softly in my palm. I raised it to admire its pure, pale pink hue before letting go, allowing it to resume its journey on the wind. Before me, the path stretched on, lined on both sides by vibrant cherry blossom trees, looking like a miniature fairy-tale garden.
"Darling, breakfast is ready! Come eat!" Evelyn’s bright voice called from the kitchen, interrupting my thoughts.
"Coming right away."
I stepped back inside with a smile. Set upon the cozy wooden dining table were two plates of sunny-side-up eggs with crisp golden edges, paired with aromatic grilled sausages. Beside my plate sat a freshly poured cup of warm milk.
Evelyn rested her chin in her hands, looking at me with a playful smile:
"You prepared milk for me, so I prepared one for you too! But this glass has a little extra 'flavor of love' in it!"
Seeing her lively charm, my heart melted inside:
"Thank you, Evelyn. It’s delicious."
Breakfast passed in a cozy atmosphere filled with laughter. Once we finished, I gathered the dishes:
"You made breakfast, so I'll do the dishes."
Rolling up my sleeves, I meticulously washed each plate under the cool running water. Finishing up, I walked out to the living room and found Evelyn curled up on the sofa, intently flipping through the pages of a book.
I gave a soft smile, tilted my head, and raised my hand.
Snap.
A snap of my fingers echoed through the air. Instantly, three plates of her favorite fresh fruits materialized on the wooden table: a plate of plump red strawberries still glistening with fresh water droplets, a plate of neatly cubed cantaloupe, and a mixed plate of glossy shine muscat and seedless green grapes.
Evelyn gasped with delight, quickly picking up a strawberry to take a small bite. Then, as if remembering something, she leaned forward and held the remaining half out to me with a bright smile:
"Try it, darling! It's so sweet! Here, let me feed you—open wide... Aahh!"
"Alright, good girl."
I leaned down and bit into the strawberry. Its crisp sweetness burst on my tongue, though the sweetest part was surely the love overflowing from the eyes of the girl before me. In return, I picked a juicy shine muscat grape and gently fed it to her. Seeing Evelyn narrow her eyes in blissful contentment, I knew my entire day was already complete.
Closing her unfinished book, Evelyn looked at me with twinkling eyes:
"Darling, why don't we go out for a little walk?"
"Let’s go, my little kitten."
We changed into simple clothes and stepped outside. The rows of cherry trees rustled gently in the wind, showering down magnificent rains of pale pink blossoms. Evelyn skipped merrily ahead, stretching her arms wide to breathe in the fresh outdoor air.
I stepped closer, picked a tiny petal resting on her shoulder, and gently tucked it into her soft hair.
"Looking at you like this, all I want to do is pull you into my arms."
Evelyn turned back, then quickly averted her head to hide her blushing cheeks:
"Hmph, no way!"
I simply chuckled, reaching out to take her small hand. We strolled leisurely along, leaving our cozy home behind.
The main road was quiet this morning, with sparse traffic. We walked through tranquil streets, reaching a traditional residential neighborhood filled with classic Japanese-style wooden houses. At the end of the lane, a small wooden sign swayed gently in the breeze: Neko Café.
"Shall we go in here?" Evelyn pointed at the café, her eyes sparkling.
"Whatever my princess wants."
Stepping through the sliding door, we were greeted by a cozy interior. The minimalist design featured dark wood furnishings, soft warm lighting, and a nostalgic touch that evoked a strangely soothing serenity.
"Hi, Aiko!" Evelyn called out cheerfully.
The woman behind the counter—who was both the owner and the barista—looked up with a warm smile:
"Oh, my favorite regular couple! The usual for both of you today?"
"Yes, please! The usual for us!"
Aiko nodded and turned to prepare two cups of Kōhī O Re (Café au Lait). While I picked a corner spot and grabbed a novel from the bookshelf, Evelyn immediately dropped down to the wooden floor to greet her familiar "friends."
Cats like Iki, Eki, and Kiiro instantly recognized her, vying for her attention and nuzzling against her hands for pets. Evelyn happily scooped up a kitten with pure white fur accented by unique black patches.
"Kai, look! This must be a new member, right?"
I rested the book on my lap, looking at the tiny kitten snuggled in her arms:
"Probably a stray Aiko recently adopted."
Just then, Aiko brought two fragrant cups of coffee to the table, gently placing them down with an explanatory smile:
"When I was closing up last night, I saw it curled up by the roadside looking so pitiful. It was probably lost or abandoned, so I brought it home to care for it.”
Evelyn nodded gently, stroking the kitten's soft belly with her fingertip:
"Poor little thing... But you have a new home now."
Setting the kitten down to let it scamper off with its playmates, Evelyn took a seat opposite me and took a sip of the hot Café au Lait. Her eyes gleamed:
"Mmm... Did Aiko's skills level up again today? This tastes amazing!"
I took a sip as well, the mild bitterness of the coffee blending flawlessly with the richness of the milk:
"I have to agree with you there."
Standing nearby, Aiko giggled behind her hand:
"You two always flatter me so much—I just brewed it with the same old recipe!"
Soft laughter echoed through the air, intertwined with the aroma of coffee and the gentle meows from the porch. A peaceful morning slipped by, as gentle and sweet as our love itself.
Leaving Neko Café, Aiko walked us to the door, waving with a warm smile:
"Drop by whenever you have free time, you two!"
"Yes, absolutely!" Evelyn replied sweetly, her face beaming with contentment.
Hand in hand, we continued our walk along the peaceful lane. The sunlight slowly softened, giving way to cool, refreshing breezes. By the roadside, an unattended flower stand sat quietly under the shade. The rustic stall displayed a vibrant array of colors: from haughty tulips and mystical blue spider lilies to bunches of peonies swaying gently in the wind.
I paused, carefully selecting a bouquet of deep red roses paired with gorgeous, fully bloomed peonies. Honoring the long-standing tradition of the honor system, I dropped coins into the small wooden box beside the stall, then turned and presented the flowers to my girl.
Evelyn accepted them, caught off guard. She buried her face in the petals, taking in their pure, delicate fragrance before looking up, a shy blush dusting her cheekbones:
"Thank you... But don't we already have so many flowers at home?"
"The flowers at home are ones you grew yourself; these are ones I bought for you. Don't you like them, little kitten?"
"I love them... I really do! The scent is so soothing!" Evelyn beamed radiantly, pressing the bouquet tightly against her chest.
"Let's head back home then."
"Mm-hmm, let's go home!"
Back in our cozy home, I leaned back on the sofa to relax. Meanwhile, Evelyn busied herself meticulously styling glass vases. Her deft hands trimmed each leaf and arranged every stem, crafting artistic arrangements that brightened our living space.
Before long, the sky melted into a brilliant twilight. She and I sat together on the porch, leaning against each other as we watched the distant horizon get washed in deep, fiery orange hues. Evelyn snuggled close, resting her head peacefully on my shoulder.
Rustle.
A faint sound rustled from the bushes. The familiar stray cat—"Stray"—had dropped by out of habit. Evelyn let out a delighted soft squeal, leaning down to stroke its soft fur. Stray lay submissively under her touch, letting out affectionately clingy meows.
As the final streak of daylight faded completely, we said goodbye to Stray and stepped back inside. Dinner was warm and simple. We worked together in the kitchen—one prepping vegetables, the other seasoning dishes—the clinking of utensils weaving together with merry laughter.
After dinner, I led her out onto the balcony to catch the night breeze and gaze up at the starry sky. Stepping quietly up behind her, I wrapped my arms gently around her slender waist.
"Look at those stars, darling... they're so beautiful..." Evelyn looked up at the vast canopy of the sky, her sparkling eyes reflecting thousands of celestial lights. "The night feels so endless in this vast universe..."
A sudden chilly night breeze swept past, making her shoulders shiver slightly. I tightened my embrace a bit, passing the heat of my body through her clothes. Evelyn leaned fully back against my chest, whispering in a soft, soothing voice:
"Darling... no matter how this world changes in the future, will the two of us always stay like this?"
Startled by her question for a brief moment, I looked deeply into her eyes with gentle warmth. My heart overflowed with profound love:
"Even if all creation dissolves into Nothingness, or the laws of this world are rewritten a billion times over, me staying by your side remains an immutable axiom."
Evelyn gave a sweetly contented smile. She snuggled deeper into my warm chest and closed her eyes, letting her soul wander to the peaceful rhythm of my heart.
Night grew late. The surroundings settled into a gentle quiet. Evelyn was already tucked under the warm duvet, revealing only her small, beautiful face. Standing in the living room, I lightly raised my hand.
Snap.
A faint snap echoed. The electric lights immediately went out, allowing a peaceful darkness to envelope the space. I stepped into the bedroom and quietly slid into the warm blankets right beside her.
Sensing my familiar warmth, Evelyn turned over. I opened my arms, pulling her soft shoulders into a full embrace. The subtle scent of cherry blossoms lingering on her hair drifted past my nose. I lightly stroked the stray locks of hair on her forehead, then casually raised my hand to snap my fingers in the air once more.
Instantly, the dark ceiling transformed like magic. A miniature, shimmering galaxy revealed itself, casting a soft, blue glowing luminescence—gentle as a nightlight straight from the cosmos.
Evelyn wrapped both small hands around my back, nestling completely inside this safe embrace. Unconsciously, I intertwined my fingers with her soft ones, gently massaging them in rhythm. My other hand lightly patted her back, steady and comforting, like a wordless lullaby.
Watching her innocent face drift off into sweet dreams beneath the mystical galaxy, I planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. Our breathing gradually synchronized, drawing a peaceful, perfect day to a close in the sweetness of love.
