The Morning Sheila Disappeared
It was Monday morning when I woke up without her on my side. I patted the spot next to me, searching, but found none. My eyes snapped open. Panic rose up through my chest, and I abruptly sat up looking around "...Sheila?" I called out, but no one answered. My voice bounced off the walls, and sweat beads on my brows despite the cool hum of the AC.
I swung my legs over the bed as I sat up almost tripping off my feet in the process the sheets fell off the bed and onto the floor, but I couldn't care less. I had to find her. I steadied myself on a nearby table walking cautiously. I did my best to stay calm, but my heart beat so fast it wanted to jump out of my chest, my hands was shaking as I gripped the doorknob.
"...Sheila? Where are you?" I called out again peeking my head out of the door as I pushed it open revealing the stairs leading down. It remained empty... weirdly so. My brows furrowed, I hesitated, my feet inches from the first staircase. I took a deep breath staring intensely on the far end of the stairs even as it remained blurred in my vision. I gripped the wooden railing tighter my knuckles turning white. My foot cautiously touched the wood, creaking under my weight the sound deafening in the empty space I suddenly felt even more self-conscious of the space I was occupying making me wince.
I slowly descended the stairs carefully, not to make too much noise even as my heart pounded loudly I swear I could feel and hear it. When I finally reached the living room, there was nothing. The couch was neat, the mat unruffled, the counter untarnished except for the sound of TV playing a weather report. I stood there for a moment, I wasn't necessarily exhausted. I just felt like I was disassociating, the space around me suddenly feeling too wide, too insignificant, and too normal. I couldn't even remember what I was feeling the past minutes ago, not even why I head downstairs—Sheila. My eyes snapped when I heard a sound from the office room. I listened for a moment; It was like someone was playing an old, jazz song from the 90s... a little static and nostalgic.
"Sheila?" I slowly crept closer to the room hesitating on the doorknob. There... stood... Sheila. Yet my palms sweat, and my feet stayed rooted; I couldn't move, couldn't speak. Who is she? She just stood there motionless, not even an inch I blinked and suddenly it looked like she was moving forward without even lifting a foot nor turning around. I couldn't understand why my heart pounds even harder and my hands shake. I finally found my voice "...Sheila..." I murmured, and the moment she turned around, I saw it. There was no face. No eyes. No nose. No mouth. Nothing. I couldn't scream. I stood frozen.
It just stared at me—though it had no eyes. I just know. It didn't move, and I also didn't. My hands shook even harder and my legs felt heavy, rooted on the floor, chills ran down through my spine. I couldn't move an inch, I couldn't speak, nor blink. "...Y-you..." It suddenly spoke, a gibberish but coherent sound. I tensed up. "You're coming with me." The air left my lungs, and I almost collapsed. I tripped on my feet in a hurry holding onto a table to balance myself before sprinting away. "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!" I repeatedly cursed under my breath as I ran faster. I hit a table straight to my stomach and I curled down on my stomach. "Agh." I coughed, my eyes watering, until I heard the sounds of footsteps getting closer. I frozed. I couldn't move because of the pain of the terror. I squeezed my eyes tight.
I felt it. Her hands were cold and smooth nothing like Sheila's warm hands that soothes me to sleep. Tears prickle on my eyes, I refuse to open it. I could feel her face close to mine my breathing getting shallower and my heart pounding faster and harder, I was basically full of sweat. My hands clutched tightly, I couldn't feel it anymore. "Fuck, fuck, no. No." I cursed under my breath, I tried opening my eyes and immediately regretted it after seeing her faceless face. I bit my tongue hard until I tasted copper, finally finding enough courage. I pushed her away scrambling on my knees, I immediately stood up and ran.
I ran as fast as I could, as far as I could, until I got far off the house. My lungs tight, legs heavy but I forced it to move, forced myself to speed up. I tripped over a rock rolling down the hill, my hand caught on a sharp twig, pain shot through my arm. I groaned, gritting my teeth. I couldn't care less about the pain and shuffle back up continuing to sprint. Tears stream down my face. I don't know whether it was from fear, grief, pain, or all.
I reached the down breathing heavily and disheveled. People were staring at me, I couldn't blame them. I look like shit. I continued moving finding a waiting shed I slumped down on a bench burying my face on my hand.
"Damn it." I snorted. I wish this was just all a joke. Who is that creature? and where is Sheila?
