Summary

Everyone in the town believed they were a perfect love story. Selene had always lived a life chosen for her, while Theo had spent his life travelling from one town to another, never staying long enough to be remembered. When their paths crossed, the people around them began turning every glance, every kindness, and every sacrifice into a love story. And eventually, they started believing it too. But what happens when the voices disappear? When there is no one left to tell them what their feelings mean? Maybe love begins when the story ends.

The Love Everyone Saw

Selene had always belonged to the town.

Everyone knew her.

She had a father who loved her, friends who had grown up beside her, familiar streets, familiar faces, and a sea she could never stay away from.

She loved swimming. She loved fishing. She loved playing in the water when the sun was high and sitting by the sea at night, when the whole town became quiet.

She had everything.

And yet, somehow, she felt empty.

Not because she was unloved.

But because she had never chosen any of it.

She was simply living the life her father had given her.

Her friends were the children of her father’s friends.

Her home was her home because she had been born there.

She had never really asked herself what she wanted.

Until Theo came.

Theo had never really belonged anywhere.

He was a merchant, and a good one.

He travelled from town to town, country to country, building his business wherever he went. He was clever, hardworking, and ambitious.

But people rarely became close to him.

Maybe it was his personality.

Maybe it was the constant travelling.

Or maybe he had simply learned how to leave before anyone had the chance to stay.

Even his own family was almost a mystery to him.

No one really remembered him when he left.

And Theo had grown used to that.

Whenever he arrived somewhere, he knew that one day he would leave.

Whenever he left, he knew that life would continue without him.

That was why, before leaving a town, Theo always took something from it.

It could be a book, a toy, or a seashell.

Nothing valuable.

Just a small reminder that he had once been there.

Something that could prove, even to himself, that he had existed in that place.

So when Theo first arrived in this small coastal town, he thought he would stay for a while, make some money, and leave like he always did.

Maybe a month.

Maybe a little longer.

Then he would move on.

But this town made him feel like an outsider more than any place he had ever been.

Everyone knew everyone.

People greeted each other in the streets.

They stopped to talk.

They knew each other’s families, their stories, and their childhoods.

Everyone belonged to someone.

Everyone had a place.

And Theo...

He was simply there.

So he decided to leave a little earlier, taking with him the feeling this town had given him.

One evening, as he walked toward the sea, he was already thinking about the shell he would take before leaving the next day.

He thought the town would become another forgotten place behind him.

Then he saw her.

Selene was unconscious near the sea, alone.

Before Theo could even think about it, he stepped forward and helped her.

He did it naturally.

Without expecting anything.

Without knowing who she was.

For a moment, there was nothing between them except the sea, the sound of the waves, and a stranger helping another stranger.

But when Theo brought Selene back, the townspeople’s curious eyes were everywhere.

They were asking questions, trying to understand what had happened.

Theo had saved her life by chance, but to them, he looked like a hero.

Theo noticed the way people were looking at him.

And something inside him enjoyed it.

When Selene’s father thanked him, Selene woke up.

She had fainted after hitting something near the sea.

She looked at Theo without knowing who he was.

He smiled at her and prepared to leave.

Later, she understood that he was the one who had helped and saved her.

To Selene, Theo seemed a little strange, a little distant, but kind.

And somehow, interesting.

She did not know why she noticed him.

She simply did.

The town noticed too.

Of course it did.

In a small town, nothing remained unseen for long.

Someone had seen Theo helping Selene.

Someone else had seen them talking.

Someone mentioned it to a friend.

And by the next morning, people were already smiling whenever they saw them together.

“Theo and Selene.”

“Selene and Theo.”

The names started appearing together in people’s conversations.

At first, Theo thought it was funny.

He had only helped a girl.

That was all.

But people kept talking, and he liked it.

The more they talked, the more often their paths seemed to cross.

Maybe it was coincidence.

Maybe it was the sea.

Maybe it was simply a small town making two people appear closer than they really were.

One evening, Theo went to the sea to collect his usual shell.

Selene was there too.

She smiled at him and thanked him.

When he told her what he was about to do—that he collected something from every town as a memory—she found the habit a little strange.

Still, she decided to help him find a good seashell.

She knew the sea well and knew where to find the best ones.

They began collecting shells together.

One for him.

One for her.

Then another.

Soon, they were sitting beside each other, comparing the little treasures they had found.

It was nothing.

Just two people collecting seashells.

But someone from the town saw them.

And the next morning...

The story had already changed.

“They were together by the sea.”

“They were collecting shells together.”

“They looked so good together.”

“Maybe something is happening between them.”

Theo heard the whispers and simply smiled.

To him, it was nothing serious.

But Selene kept one of the shells.

To her, it had become a beautiful memory.

And because people kept talking about it, that memory slowly began to feel like something more.

Maybe it was the wind.

Maybe it was the people.

Maybe it was the eyes that followed them everywhere.

People kept saying their names.

Theo.

Selene.

Selene.

Theo.

And after hearing it enough times...

The two names started to make sense together.

They started walking together more often.

They spoke.

They laughed.

They went to the sea.

They worked together.

Their meetings became ordinary.

Their presence beside each other became normal.

And the people loved it.

But there was something no one understood.

In every legendary story, you have to go deep inside it.

You have to stand at the very edges of it, to see the truth.

Theo was a successful merchant.

But almost no one in the town knew who he really was.

They knew his work.

They knew that he was smart.

They knew that he could make money.

But they did not know the boy behind the merchant.

The boy who had travelled too much.

The boy who had never stayed long enough to be remembered.

The boy who had spent most of his life searching for something he could not name.

Attention.

Recognition.

A reason for people to remember him after he was gone.

And then, in this town, something strange happened.

People began to see him.

Not because of his business.

Not because of his money.

But because of his story with Selene.

And perhaps, for the first time, Theo began to enjoy the way people looked at him.

Selene was different.

She had always been loved by the people of the town.

Her father loved her.

Her friends loved her.

The town knew her.

She had never needed to fight to be seen.

But when Theo appeared, something changed.

She began watching him quietly.

She noticed the way he looked at the sea.

The way his eyes sometimes seemed to be looking far beyond what was in front of him.

There was something mysterious in his eyes.

Something she could not understand.

Sometimes she would look directly into them, searching for something.

And she would find nothing she could name.

Still, the people around her kept giving her answers.

They talked about how much Theo cared about her.

How much he sacrificed.

How often he stayed near her.

How he always seemed to be there.

She could not see all of that in his eyes.

But she heard it from everyone else.

And slowly...

She believed it.

Theo eventually became close to Selene’s father.

Her father was a respected merchant in the town.

Theo was clever, and her father recognized his ability.

He began working with him.

At first, it was simply business.

Then it became familiar.

Theo was there every morning.

He worked beside Selene’s father.

He became a familiar face in their home.

And Selene noticed.

Her father trusted Theo.

And in Selene’s eyes, that meant something.

She was her father’s daughter.

If her father believed someone was good...

Then maybe that person was good.

So she began to trust Theo too.

Slowly.

Without realizing it.

Their coincidences became more frequent.

Seeing Theo every morning became normal.

Going to the sea together became normal.

Talking became normal.

Their families became close.

The people of the town loved them.

Her family loved them.

And soon, everyone was convinced.

They were a love story.

A beautiful one.

A legendary one.

But there was always something between the lines.

Selene thought Theo was becoming her first real choice.

For the first time in her life, she thought she had chosen someone for herself.

But she did not know yet...

She had not chosen him alone.

The people had chosen the story for her.

They had put the two names together.

They had given meaning to every glance.

Every meeting.

Every sacrifice.

Every silence.

And she had slowly fallen in love with the story they had created around them.

One day, while Theo was standing beside Selene and her father, a man arrived.

He knew Theo.

He knew his work.

He knew how talented he was.

And he came with an opportunity.

A real one.

A future that could take Theo much further than this small town ever could.

More money.

More success.

More recognition.

A larger business.

But there was a price.

Theo would have to leave.

He would have to travel to another town, perhaps for three months, perhaps six.

Maybe longer.

He would have to leave Selene.

He would have to leave her father’s business halfway through.

And compared to the future waiting for him elsewhere, the small trade he was building in this small town seemed insignificant.

Everyone listened.

Theo listened.

Selene listened.

When the man finished speaking, Theo simply told him he would think about it.

Then he left.

For a few moments, Theo and Selene simply looked at each other.

Neither said anything.

Selene’s mind was full of questions.

She knew how important this opportunity was to him.

His future.

His ambition.

His pride.

His reputation.

She knew she could not tell him what to choose.

She did not want to become the reason he gave up his future.

But she did not want him to leave.

Not after all this time.

Not after everything they had become.

Theo looked into her eyes too.

He was searching for something.

A word.

A question.

Anything.

But Selene stayed silent.

She could not tell him to stay.

She could not tell him to go.

And Theo...

Theo was thinking about something else.

He remembered every town he had ever left.

Every place where people had known him for a moment.

Every place where he had eventually become a forgotten face.

What if he left this town too?

What if three months became six?

What if six became a year?

What if people forgot him?

What if they forgot Theo and Selene?

What if they forgot the story?

For the first time, he had become known.

Loved.

Remembered.

And he was afraid of losing that.

That night, they went home without saying anything.

Selene lay in her bed, staring at the ceiling.

She kept thinking about the opportunity.

Maybe I should have said something.

Maybe he was waiting for me.

But he did not ask.

It was his decision.

She turned beneath the blankets.

And just before closing her eyes, one thought crossed her mind.

Maybe he doesn’t love me that much.

Then she fell asleep.

Across town, Theo was awake too.

He thought about the people.

The memories.

Selene’s father.

The business.

The town.

Everything he had built there.

And he thought about what would happen if he left.

Would they remember him?

Would they remember them?

Would the story disappear?

He had seen it happen before.

Every town eventually forgot him.

So Theo made his choice.

And then...

He went to sleep.

The next morning, the small town already knew.

Of course it did.

Nothing stayed hidden there.

As Theo and Selene walked together, as they always did, they heard the whispers around them.

“Is this how their story ends?”

“Poor Selene.”

“She’ll be alone.”

“Theo would be foolish if he didn’t go.”

“He has to take the opportunity.”

Their voices followed them.

And then Theo stopped.

In front of the man who had offered him the opportunity, with Selene standing beside him, Theo spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.

“I am really thankful for your offer, but I can’t just leave this town... and I can never leave Selene.”

Everyone became silent.

Theo looked at the man.

“I won’t leave Selene behind.”

The town erupted in whispers.

And in that moment, everyone believed they had been right all along.

Their love was real.

Their love was strong.

Their love had won.

Selene stood frozen.

She looked at Theo.

And for the first time, she allowed herself to think:

"Maybe he really does love me".

Their relationship continued.

And the story grew.

Every sacrifice became proof.

Every decision became evidence.

Every look became another chapter in the love story the town had already written for them.

They gave a lot to that love.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

Until the day came when they really had to leave.

After Selene and Theo had been together for some time, Theo had to leave the town. He no longer had any work there, and there was no reason for him to stay.

But how could he leave Selene he know what this town mean to her how could he ever ask her to leave with him?

He had already made his choice to leave.

But there was one thing he had not decided yet.

Would Selene come with him?

He didn’t know.

And that uncertainty frightened him more than he wanted to admit.

That night, Theo sat alone, thinking about everything he would leave behind.

And all the memories he had collected without realizing how important they had become.

He thought about the day he first arrived and how no one knew him.

He remembered how quickly the town had started saying his name.

How they had started seeing Theo and Selene as one story.

And then another thought came to him.

What if she doesn’t come?

What would happen then?

Would the people forget them?

Would everyone remember Theo as the man who left Selene behind?

The thought terrified him.

He knew how quickly people could forget him.

But this time, he was afraid of something different.

He was afraid that if Selene stayed, everything they had built would disappear with her.

And somewhere beneath that fear was another question he didn’t dare ask himself.

Am I afraid of losing Selene...

or am I afraid of losing what Selene means to me?

The strength of that fear kept him awake.

Meanwhile, Selene was lying in her bed, thinking about the same decision.

Leaving with Theo meant leaving.

She would leave her father.

Her home.

The sea.

The only place she had ever truly belonged.

She turned beneath her blanket, staring into the darkness.

What am I supposed to choose?

She wished theo had told her what he wanted that would make it a bit esaier.

But he hadn’t.

And she didn’t want to end there story she can't imagine her life without him anymore.

So neither of them slept peacefully that night.

In the morning she made her decision ,she did not want to leave.

But she could not abandon the only person she believed she had chosen and truly loved.

So she agreed to leave with him.

Theo, who had been afraid that Selene might not come, felt relieved when she accepted.

he felt a happiness he didn't really understand it.

He believed their story was strong enough to remain on people’s lips after they left.

Everyone would remember how powerful their love had been.

After saying goodbye to the town through Selene’s tears, without knowing how long they would be away, they set off toward a completely different life.

After they left, the people of the town kept remembering them and their perfect love story—the sacrifices they had made, the strong feelings they believed they shared, and everything they had given up for each other.

To everyone in the town, their story had ended beautifully.

A perfect love story.

A happy ending.

A happily ever after.

This time, there was no audience.

No town.

No whispers.

No one watching.

Only Theo and Selene.

No one telling Selene what Theo’s actions meant.

For the first time, they were completely alone.

And at first, nothing seemed different.

Theo was still kind.

He still said “Good morning” when they woke up.

He still wished her “Good night” before they slept.

He still helped her when she needed it.

He still smiled.

Theo had always been a kind person.

But kindness could easily be misunderstood as love.

And without the voices of the town, Selene slowly began to realize that.

She started paying attention to the things no one had ever explained to her.

His eyes.

His silences.

The way he looked at her.

The way he spoke to her.

The little things he did when no one was watching.

Before, there had always been someone to give those things a meaning.

“Look at the way he looks at you.”

“He really cares about you.”

“He would do anything for you.”

“He loves you.”

But now...

There was no one.

Selene had to understand him by herself.

And little by little, she began to notice things she had never noticed before.

Theo was still kind.

But his kindness did not feel like love anymore.

His smile did not stay as long.

His eyes did not search for hers the way they once seemed to.

Their conversations became simpler.

Their days became quieter.

He was still beside her...

But somehow, he felt farther away.

And the longer they stayed alone together, the more confused Selene became about her own feelings.

She began going back through every memory.

The sea.

The shells.

The mornings beside her father.

The moments when people had smiled at them.

Every sacrifice.

Every word.

Every time someone had told her that Theo loved her.

She wondered how much of it had actually belonged to them...

And how much had belonged to everyone else.

Meanwhile, Theo was confused too.

He had never stopped being kind to her.

He cared about her in his own way.

He remembered their memories.

He remembered the sea.

He remembered the little seashells they had collected together.

He stayed quiet for a moment, lost in his thoughts.

What if taking her with him was a mistake?

What if she missed her town too much?

What if she missed her father, her friends, the sea, and the life she had always known?

What if, one day, she regretted choosing him?

Theo lowered his eyes.

For the first time, he wondered if taking Selene with him was really the right thing to do.

But then another thought came to him.

What if she stayed?

What if he left without her?

What if, after all those mornings, all those walks, and all those memories, he had to wake up somewhere new without her beside him?

He stared into the distance for a while.

Then, almost to himself, he whispered,

“What would I do if I missed her?”

He was no longer surrounded by people telling him what their relationship was supposed to be.

Only Selene.

And himself.

Then, one day, after a long silence between them, Selene finally looked at him.

There was something different in her eyes.

Something honest.

Something afraid.

Out of nowhere.

“Do you really love me?”

Theo froze.

He had not expected the question.

Not like this.

Not so suddenly.

He had said "I Love you" so many times before.

Sometimes because he felt like he should.

Sometimes because everyone already believed it.

Sometimes because it was simply what their story required.

But now Selene was looking directly into his eyes.

She wasn’t asking because someone had told her what his actions meant.

She was asking him.

For the truth.

Theo opened his mouth.

“I do...”

He stopped.

His eyes moved away for a moment.

“I mean... I do.”

Another silence.

He looked back at her.

And for the first time, he realized he didn’t know if the words were true.

“I don’t know.”

His voice became quieter.

“I’m sorry.”

She had a feeling ,But hearing the words with her own ears was different.

Her eyes began to fill with tears.

Quietly.

Without a sound.

All the certainty she had built around their story collapsed at once.

She had finally become certain of her own feelings.

And at the same time...

She became certain that his were not there.

She looked at him through her tears and whispered:

“I know you never loved me. You loved the story you created from what people said. I thought I loved that story too... but I realized I was wrong.

So there’s no big love...

There is only big talk.”

Theo was stunned.

Perhaps it was her feelings—seeing them this clearly for the first time.

Or perhaps it was the way she looked at him through her tears, trying so hard to hide how much she was hurting.

He had never seen her look at him like that before.

And somehow, that look hurt him more than he could understand.

He had spent his whole life caring about the way people looked at him.

Yet he had never imagined that one person’s gaze could affect him more than all the eyes he had ever known.

Her eyes broke something inside him.

And what broke him even more was realizing that those tears...

were because of him.

And somewhere between the silence...

the tears...

and everything they had once called love...

one question remained.

What is great love?
