Summary

Chapter Summary Beatrice discovers that the silver key hidden inside the mysterious room was meant to open a secret passage within the Archives. As she, Nathaniel, and Elias investigate, they uncover a forgotten section of Breedlove family history connected to Isadora Violet Breedlove and the mysterious woman named Seraphine. But the deeper they search, the more they realize that certain memories were deliberately removed from the family records. When Beatrice discovers a hidden journal belonging to Isadora, she finds evidence that her mother knew about the Heart—and may have been searching for it long before Beatrice ever entered Breedlove Manor. The final entry contains a warning written directly to Beatrice. Do not let the Manor remember you too soon.

Chapter 15

THE NEVERMORE CHRONICLES

BOOK ONE: BREEDLOVE MANOR

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

THE KEY BENEATH THE ARCHIVES

✦ ✦ ✦

The key was still warm in Beatrice's hand.

She stared at it for several seconds.

The false voice outside the door had disappeared.

So had the knocking.

The room was silent again.

Too silent.

Beatrice looked toward the doorway.

She still did not trust it.

Whatever had spoken in Nathaniel's voice had known exactly what to say.

It had known her name.

It had known who she trusted.

And it had tried to make her open the door.

She turned back toward the stone wall.

The small keyhole beneath the Breedlove crest remained open.

Beatrice slowly inserted the key again.

This time, she turned it.

Something clicked.

A deep rumbling sound moved through the wall.

Stone shifted.

A narrow section opened beside the table.

Behind it was a staircase.

Beatrice stared.

"Another one."

She stepped closer.

The stairs descended only a few feet before ending at a small landing.

A door waited there.

Unlike the other doors in Breedlove Manor, this one was made of pale wood.

There was no handle.

Only a single word carved into its surface.

REMEMBER.

Beatrice touched the letters.

The door opened.

Beyond it was not another chamber.

It was a narrow passage leading directly toward the Archives.

Beatrice recognized the scent immediately.

Cedar.

Old paper.

Dust.

She stepped through.

The passage ended behind a tall bookshelf.

Beatrice pushed gently.

The shelf moved.

She emerged into the Library.

Nathaniel and Elias were standing beside the map table.

Both turned immediately.

Nathaniel's expression changed when he saw her.

"Where have you been?"

Beatrice looked at the bookshelf behind her.

"I don't know how to explain it."

Elias approached.

"Try."

She held up the key.

"This was inside."

Nathaniel studied it.

"Where?"

"The room."

His face became serious.

"The room behind the eastern door?"

Beatrice nodded.

Elias glanced toward Nathaniel.

"You were right."

Nathaniel shook his head.

"I didn't say anything."

"You didn't have to."

Beatrice placed the key on the table.

"There was a journal."

Nathaniel looked at her.

"Whose?"

"Isadora's."

The name silenced them.

Elias pulled out a chair.

"Where?"

"In the room."

"Did you bring it?"

Beatrice hesitated.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I think the room wanted me to find it there."

Nathaniel frowned.

"That's not an answer."

"It is the only one I have."

For a moment, none of them spoke.

Then Beatrice noticed something.

The key had left a faint mark on the table.

A symbol.

A heart surrounded by eight lines.

Elias leaned closer.

"That's the same symbol from the family records."

Nathaniel nodded.

"Eight generations."

Beatrice looked toward the shelves.

"Maybe the Archives can tell us what it means."

They began searching.

It took nearly an hour.

They examined family histories, old maps, personal journals, and records that had not been opened in decades.

Nothing.

Then Elias pulled a thin black book from the bottom shelf.

"This wasn't here before."

Beatrice approached.

The cover was plain.

No title.

No crest.

Only a silver key embossed into the leather.

Her breath caught.

She opened it.

The first page contained a single name.

ISADORA VIOLET BREEDLOVE.

Beatrice's hands began to shake.

The first entry was dated 1794.

She read silently.

Then her face changed.

Nathaniel noticed.

"What does it say?"

Beatrice looked up.

"She knew about the Heart."

Elias leaned closer.

"How?"

Beatrice turned the book toward them.

The entry was brief.

The Heart does not belong to the Manor.

It belongs to the blood that remembers it.

Nathaniel frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

Beatrice turned the page.

Another entry.

The Founder warned us never to awaken it without the eighth generation.

Elias looked at Beatrice.

"We are the eighth generation."

"Maybe."

Nathaniel shook his head.

"Or maybe we're only part of it."

Beatrice continued reading.

The entries became increasingly strange.

Isadora wrote about dreams.

Voices.

Doors appearing where walls had once stood.

She wrote about Seraphine.

Not as a ghost.

Not as a legend.

As someone she had spoken to.

Beatrice stopped.

"She knew her."

Nathaniel looked at the page.

"What does she say?"

Beatrice read the next entry.

Seraphine says the Heart remembers every generation.

She says one day the bloodline will return to the Manor.

And when it does, the erased name will be restored.

Elias looked toward the family records.

"Isadora was looking for the erased branch."

Beatrice nodded.

"Yes."

Another page.

This time, the handwriting was rushed.

I have found the chamber.

I have found the Heart.

But I am not alone.

Beatrice stopped reading.

Nathaniel leaned closer.

"What happened next?"

She turned the page.

Blank.

Another.

Blank.

Another.

Nothing.

Then, at the very back of the journal, one final page.

The handwriting was different.

Darker.

Almost black.

Beatrice read it aloud.

"If my daughter ever returns to Breedlove Manor, tell her this."

She froze.

Nathaniel stared at her.

"Your daughter?"

Beatrice continued.

"Do not let the Manor remember her too soon."

The room seemed to grow colder.

Elias whispered, "What does that mean?"

Beatrice shook her head.

"I don't know."

The journal closed by itself.

The key on the table began to vibrate.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nathaniel reached for Beatrice.

"Step back."

The Library lights flickered.

A sound came from somewhere beneath them.

A heartbeat.

Beatrice looked down.

The floor pulsed beneath her feet.

And from deep within Breedlove Manor came a whisper.

"Too late."

The key went cold.
