Chapter 1

I don’t know when I became a failure.

Maybe it was gradual—a slow erosion, like water wearing down stone. Or maybe it happened all at once, in some moment I wasn’t paying attention to, and I’ve just been living in the aftermath ever since.

My name is Arthur Calloway. I’m forty years old. I have brown eyes, pale skin that burns too easily, and a body that’s decent enough—I run three times a week, lift weights when I remember. I work in corporate strategy for a mid-sized consulting firm. I make good money. I own a nice house in a nice neighborhood.

And I have a wife who looks at me like I’m a disappointing rough draft of the man she actually wanted.

Her name is Sharae.

She’s beautiful—the kind of beautiful that turns heads in restaurants, that makes other men stumble over their words. Dark skin like polished mahogany, curves that belong on a sculpture, an ass that every man turns back to look at and eyes that can cut through you or warm you depending on her mood.

Lately, they’ve only cut. Her moods have been horrible, seems to get worse by the day.

We’re at a charity gala tonight. One of those overwrought affairs where rich people pretend to care about causes they’ll forget by Monday. Sharae insisted we come. She always insists on these things—she loves the performance, the attention, the validation.

I’m holding her clutch.

She’s across the room, laughing too loudly at something a colleague said, her hand resting on his arm just a beat too long. I watch her, nursing a glass of champagne I don’t want, and feel the familiar tightness in my chest.

I’ve tried everything.

*Everything.*

I’ve read her romance novels—those filthy, beautifully written books she devours like oxygen. I’ve studied them like textbooks, highlighted passages, taken notes. I’ve tried to recreate the scenes that make her breath hitch when she reads them alone at night.

I’ve tied her wrists to our bedframe with silk rope.

I’ve fucked her from behind while shoving a dildo in her ass, my hand fisted in her hair, pulling just hard enough to make her gasp.

I’ve used vibrators, butt plugs, nipple clamps, even clit clamps. I’ve choked her, slapped her. I’ve fucked her throat until tears streamed down her face. Actually that’s the only time she gives me head, is when I force it down her throat and that is one thing that will make her explode, she fucking loves it but its not my thing. I can do all these things, I enjoy the toys, I enjoy the kink but I am not dominant, it doesn’t turn me on like it does her.

And every single time, after she cums, after I’ve given her everything I have, she rolls away from me and sighs.

Not in satisfaction.

In *disappointment.*

“You’re trying too hard, Arthur,” she said once, her voice flat. “It’s supposed to be natural. You can’t force chemistry.”

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to ask her what the fuck *more* she wanted from me.

Instead, I apologized.

I always apologize. She acts like I don’t have needs also.

I’m pulled from my spiral by a presence.

It’s subtle at first—a shift in the air, a weight that presses against the back of my neck. I turn, scanning the crowd, and my eyes land on a man standing near the bar.

He’s watching me.

No—he’s *studying* me.

He’s tall—easily six-four—with broad shoulders that strain against a perfectly tailored black suit. His skin is deep brown, almost midnight in the low light, and his presence is... magnetic. Dangerous. He doesn’t smile. He doesn’t move. He just watches, his dark eyes locked on mine with an intensity that makes my pulse stutter.

I look away quickly, my face heating.

When I glance back, he’s gone.

---

Sharae comes home late again.

It’s become a pattern. She stays late at work, goes out for drinks with colleagues, attends “networking events” that run until midnight. She always has an explanation, always delivered with just enough irritation to make me feel guilty for asking.

Tonight, she doesn’t even bother with an excuse.

“I’m exhausted,” she says, kicking off her heels and heading straight for the stairs. “Don’t wait up.”

She’s in bed within ten minutes, her back to me, her breathing already evening out.

I sit on the couch in the dark, my phone in my hand, and scroll through our text history.

**Me:** *Hope your meeting went well. Want me to pick up dinner?*

**Sharae:** *Already ate.*

**Me:** *Miss you. Want to watch a movie tonight?*

**Sharae:** *Tired. Rain check.*

**Me:** *I love you.*

*Read 9:47 PM.*

No response.

It’s three weeks later when Dominic enters our lives.

Sharae mentions him casually over breakfast—her new colleague, recently transferred from the New York office. He’s sharp, she says. Ambitious. A little cocky, but in a charming way.

“You’d like him,” she says, not looking up from her phone.

I wouldn’t.

I don’t even know him yet, and I already know I won’t.

She starts talking about him more.

*Dominic said the funniest thing today.*

*Dominic thinks I should pitch myself for the VP role.*

*Dominic invited me to this exclusive networking event downtown.*

Her eyes light up when she says his name.

They haven’t lit up for me in years.

One night, I find her in our bedroom, staring at her phone with a small, secret smile.

“What’s funny?” I ask, trying to keep my tone light.

She jumps, locking the screen immediately. “Nothing. Just a meme from work.”

“Can I see?”

Her jaw tightens. “Why are you always hovering, Arthur? Jesus Christ, can’t I have *one* private conversation?”

“I wasn’t—”

“I’m going to take a bath.”

She locks the bathroom door.

I stand there, staring at the closed door, and feel the ground shifting beneath me.
