Chapter One

Dylan always thought his life was perfect after meeting his ex-girlfriend, but he was wrong. Penelope showed her real intentions after discovering she was pregnant with a baby. He found out that she had never loved him but his money.

Dylan sighed at those memories. Thinking about that woman after four years felt weird, but he shouldn’t. The only girl in his heart is Lexie. Just thinking about her, a smile forms on his lips. She has grown up so fast. While sitting in his office at the company, his parents babysit their granddaughter.

“Come in.” A knock on his door brought him back from memory land. It was not time to think about the bad stuff and only focus on the future.

“Boss, your parents are here with your daughter.” Andrew, his assistant, announces to him.

“My parents? Let them in, and bring me some water, milk, and a coffee.”

“Yes, Boss.” After Andrew left the office, the door opened again, and his daughter burst inside, and his parents tagged behind her.

“Dada!” Lexie mumbled as she ran to her Father’s arms.

“Hey, Munchkin, did you have fun with your grandparents?” Lexie nodded and laid her head on her Father’s shoulder. “Hi Mom, hi Dad. Let’s sit on the couch.”

“Lexie is full of energy, but she’s a good girl,” Elizabeth said with a smile as she sat beside her husband. “I’m sorry if we are interrupting you in the company.”

“You are not interrupting me. You are my family, and you can always come here. Is something wrong? Dad looks pale.”

Elizabeth and David looked at each other with a sad smile. “We had an appointment with a doctor today at the hospital, and Lexie was with us. We didn’t want to worry you, but he gave us some bad news.”

“What are you talking about? Dad?”

David sighed. “The doctor did some blood tests and ultrasound, and the result was terrible. I have cancer in my stomach.”

Dylan looked at his Father with shock. His hero was sick with cancer. The one man who always stood by his side since discovering his love for racing, the one who always helped him bring trophies home. Dylan couldn’t believe his ears, and his daughter was asleep in his arms.

“Did the doctor tell you if there was a way to cure it?”

David shook his head. “I’m sorry, son. I’m in the late stage of cancer. If only we went to the hospital a year ago.”

“It’s my fault, and I should have made you work with me that day when you looked pale. I’m sorry, Dad.”

“Don’t be sorry, Dylan. It’s not your fault. You know how stubborn I can be. Ask your mom how often she told me to go to the hospital. I never listened to her.”

“Your Father is right, Dylan. Don’t feel bad about it.”

Dylan sighed and leaned back without waking his daughter. He couldn’t believe his dad could die at any moment.

“Dylan, we would like you to hire a nanny for Lexie so that we can relax. Your dad wants to take me on a cruise for a month. The doctor said your dad has a maximum of a year to live. We want to enjoy life to the fullest.”

“I’ll tell Andrew to post a job application for a nanny. I’ll choose with careful a nanny for my daughter. You have fun on the cruise. Just keep me updated.”

“Don’t worry about us. We’ll keep you updated. I see that Lexie has fallen asleep, poor baby. Let’s take her home. Will you finish late today?”

“I don’t think so, and I have a meeting in an hour about an event for racers. I’ll be home at six o'clock.”

Dylan kissed his daughter’s forehead and passed her to his mother carefully. He then hugged his Father tight.

“Don’t worry, son. No matter what, I’ll always be your no. 1 fan.” Dylan blinked his eyes, and he didn’t want to cry before his parents.

Dylan accompanied his parents to the lobby and stopped a taxi for them. “Call me when you arrive home.”

“We will. Have a good day at work. See you later at your house.” Dylan nodded and watched the taxi leave with his family. If his sister and brother find out, they will be crushed.

“Boss, the meeting will start in ten minutes. We should head inside.” Andrew announced as he stood beside him.

“Andrew, what is the rest of my schedule?”

Andrew looked at the diary and said. “After this meeting, you have another one at 3 p.m. Should I add something more to your schedule for today?”

“No, Andrew. Please post a job application for a nanny. Clear my whole week’s schedule, please. Move some appointments to a different time and day, also the meetings.”

“Sure, Boss. Which address should I put in the job application?”

“My home address.”

“You got it, Boss.” Dylan sighed. This year would be challenging now that his dad was sick with cancer. He only hoped that the nanny would be someone professional and loved children. Dylan turned back inside his company. He wanted to finish today’s schedule and return home to his family. They are going to need him.
