Chapter 1
Pain.
That was the first thing Mianna felt when she regained consciousness.
Every bone in her body screamed in agony. Her head felt as though someone had beaten it with a hammer, and her throat was so dry it felt like it might crack open.
Why did everything hurt so much?
Right. She remembered now.
She, Mianna, had been doing a good deed, helping an old lady cross the road when she got hit by a truck.
Not exactly “good luck.”
More like **a freaking truck**.
The last thing Mianna remembered was shoving the old lady out of the way with all her strength.
She had no idea whether the old woman was all right...
She tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt as heavy as lead. Her ears were filled with a faint buzzing, and through the haze, she could vaguely hear a child's voice calling her name.
“Host! Host, wake up! You can't give up! If you give up, I'll have to be sent back for reprocessing! O(╥﹏╥)o”
...What the heck was making so much noise...?
Was heaven really this noisy?
“Host! Waaaaah! You're the first host I managed to bind with! You can't do this to me! (;゚д゚)”
Mianna: ...
Had she gone to hell instead?
She struggled to pry her eyelids open. Her vision was a blur.
It took several seconds before she could finally make out what was floating beside her face.
A small white ball of light was bouncing up and down excitedly.
“You're awake! You're awake! Host, you're awake!! (ノ°▽°)ノ”
The ball of light was so excited that it nearly crashed into her face.
“Thank goodness! Thank goodness! I thought you were a goner!”
Mianna parted her lips. When she finally managed to make a sound, her voice was as rough as sandpaper scraping against stone.
“...Who are you?”
“I'm your system! (^▽^)”
The ball of light spun happily in front of her.
“System Number 0425. You can call me Quad! From today onward, we're officially bound partners!”
Mianna was silent for three seconds.
Then she closed her eyes.
She must be having a nightmare.
She was exhausted.
Maybe she should just sleep a little longer.
“Host? Host? Don't sleep! Listen to me first!”
“Don't wanna.”
“...”
Quad froze for a second.
Then it became even more frantic.
“(°ロ°) No, no, no! You have to listen! You got hit by that truck and died! You've transmigrated! You've transmigrated to the Beast World Continent! Your original body is a crazy female supporting character who's about to die all over again! If you don't get up and start working, you're seriously going to die!”
Mianna didn't move.
“You're really going to die! I mean literally! I'm not joking!”
Mianna still didn't move.
Quad panicked. (」°ロ°)」
It began pouring out information at an incredible speed.
“Your current body is on the verge of death! The original owner was a useless first-rank female with no supernatural ability! She was just killed by her own male mate! There's only one breath of life left in her! If you don't hurry up and save yourself, you'll last at most another day!!”
Mianna opened one eye and stared at the excited, flashing white ball.
Seeing that it finally had her attention, Quad continued.
“The novel you've transmigrated into is called *Savage Beast Mates: The Beautiful Female Won't Escape*! You became the crazy female supporting character who has the same name as you, Ling Mianna! She's a sheep beastkin, the only daughter of the chief of the Stonehorn Tribe! After failing to awaken her ability and suffering severe mental trauma, she became violent and cruel—a notorious crazy female known far and wide!”
So bright...
It was practically turning into a disco ball.
Mianna closed her eyes again.
“You contracted four male mates! The first is a childhood sweetheart and a mouflon beastkin. The second is a snow leopard who was deceived into marrying her for an alliance. The third is a raven beastkin who was rescued by the chief. And the fourth is a Northern Wolf whom she accidentally bonded with!”
Quad took a breath and continued.
“Now that snow leopard accidentally beat you to death while resisting you! He was also imprisoned for injuring a female!”
Mianna opened her eyes.
What was this baa-baa, wolf-wolf nonsense?
Had she somehow transmigrated to a giant meadow?
Quad perked up excitedly. (◕◡◕✿)
“You're interested now?”
Mianna stared at the glowing ball.
“You're really noisy. And according to what you just said, didn't I already die?”
Quad: “... (。╯︵╰。)”
Mianna pushed herself up, trying to sit.
Only then did she realize that this body was even weaker than she'd imagined.
She took several shallow breaths and barely managed to prop herself halfway upright.
“So? What exactly do you need me to do?”
Quad immediately perked up.
“(◕◡◕✿) The host needs to complete system missions! Earn points! Exchange them for supplies! Increase your supernatural ability! Extend your life and survive!”
“And then?”
“Then! You can rise from an evil female into the most revered **Supreme Saint Female** in the entire Beast World! And build your tribe into the greatest tribe in the Beast World!”
Mianna looked at him.
Quad quickly added:
“Once you complete the missions, you can return to your original world! You'll go back to five minutes before the accident happened! You'll be alive again! (◕◡◕✿)”
...
Five minutes?
Mianna was silent for several seconds.
Then she slowly lay back down.
Quad: “...Host? (・∀・)”
“I'm not doing it.”
“What?! (O_O)”
Mianna lay flat on her back, staring blankly at the primitive grass-and-wood ceiling overhead.
Her voice was calm.
“I grew up without a father. My mother left me too. Then my boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend. There isn't much point in being alive anyway. If I'm dead, I'm dead. I don't want to go back.”
Five minutes?
What a miser.
Quad was stunned.
This wasn't how it was supposed to go!
Hadn't the instructor said that people who died in accidents had the strongest will to survive?
Wasn't this supposed to be a beginner-friendly mission?
Why didn't his host want to live?!
Waaaaah...
OTL
“No, no, no, no!” Quad spun frantically in circles.
“(;゚Д゚)! Host, you can't do this! If you die, I'll be sent back for reprocessing too! I just started working! I don't want to go back yet!”
And his instructor would definitely scold him!
Waaaaah...
Mianna ignored him.
“Then... then, Host, is there anything you want? (•ω•)”
Quad was willing to try anything now.
“Can you bring my mother back to life?”
Mianna looked at him hopefully.
Quad fell silent.
“Well... I... I can't do that... (╥_╥)”
Quad looked utterly devastated.
For someone like Mianna, who had only just died in an accident, even the system's power could only rewind time to five minutes before the accident.
Someone who had already been dead for years...
There was simply no way to bring them back.
Mianna lay flat again.
“Then think... think... (>_<)”
Quad desperately racked its tiny little brain.
“Think about your boyfriend! Don't you want to go back and get revenge on him?”
“No.”
Mianna closed her eyes.
“What if, when you go back, I give you a hundred billion in compensation?! (◕◡◕✿)”
“Not interested.”
Mianna pulled the animal hide over her head.
Quad was completely out of ideas.
The little ball of light dimmed as it floated listlessly in the air, shrinking into a miserable little blob.
Quad could already picture itself being sent back to the System Training Center and getting an earful from its instructor.
Why was its life so miserable?
Waaaaah...
(╥_╥)
Just then, the door of the thatched hut was pushed open.
Mianna instinctively poked her head out from beneath the animal hide and looked toward the entrance. A figure walked in against the light. It seemed to be a woman.
“Mia, you're awake?”
The woman's voice trembled slightly, yet there was something strangely familiar about it.
She hurried to the bedside and crouched down, reaching out to feel Mianna's forehead. Only then did Mianna get a proper look at her.
The woman appeared to be in her thirties. She had long brown hair loosely pinned up with a white hairpin, with a few wisps falling around her temples. Fatigue was etched across her face, but the moment her eyes landed on Mianna, they lit up.
Mianna froze.
That face.
Those eyes.
That careful, heartbroken expression.
And the warm, gentle hand caressing her forehead...
The woman looked so much like her mother who had passed away.
