Chapter 1
A Familiar Stranger
Episode 1 — The New Beginning
The glass doors of Velora slid open as Ivy stepped into the building.
For a moment, she simply stood there.
The headquarters rose several stories above her, its walls made almost entirely of glass and steel. Morning sunlight poured through the enormous windows, scattering pale reflections across the polished marble floor. Employees moved through the spacious lobby with practiced purpose—some carrying tablets and folders, others speaking quietly into their phones as they hurried toward the elevators.
Everything about the place looked expensive.
Precise.
Untouchable.
Ivy tightened her fingers around the strap of her handbag.
She had imagined her first day here several times.
None of those versions had included this strange feeling in her stomach.
She took a slow breath and looked down at herself.
Her clothes were professional without being overly formal, chosen carefully the night before. She had spent far too long deciding what to wear, despite repeatedly telling herself that it was just a job.
Her long hair was neatly arranged, framing her face, while a few loose strands had escaped around her cheeks.
She checked the time on her phone.
9:42 a.m.
Plenty of time.
"Okay," she whispered to herself. "You've got this."
A small smile appeared on her face.
Then she walked toward reception.
The receptionist looked up.
"Good morning."
"Good morning." Ivy returned the smile. "I'm Ivy Bennett. It's my first day."
The receptionist quickly checked the information on her computer.
"Yes, Ms. Bennett. You're expected on the executive floor."
Ivy nodded.
"Thank you."
"Someone from the executive office will meet you there."
"Alright."
Ivy thanked her again before walking toward the elevators.
As she waited, she caught her reflection in the mirrored doors.
She looked calm.
At least on the outside.
That was good enough.
The elevator arrived with a soft chime.
She stepped inside.
The doors closed.
For the first time since entering the building, she was alone.
Ivy let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.
This job mattered to her.
She had earned it.
She wasn't here because of someone's recommendation or because she knew someone important.
She was here because she was good at what she did.
That was all that mattered.
She didn't know much about Velora's CEO.
Actually, she knew almost nothing.
She hadn't even bothered learning the woman's name.
The position itself had been enough to occupy her attention, and she'd never expected to have any reason to meet the CEO personally.
Yet there she was, riding toward the executive floor for an introductory meeting.
She straightened her shoulders.
New job.
New chapter.
No looking backward.
The elevator doors opened.
On the executive floor, the atmosphere was considerably quieter.
Thick carpeting replaced the marble downstairs, softening every footstep. Large windows stretched along one side of the corridor, overlooking the city below.
Grace walked through the hallway with a tablet tucked against her side.
She was a woman who carried herself with the kind of confidence that came from years of knowing exactly what she was doing.
Her appearance was polished but practical. Her hair was neatly styled, her clothes professional, and there was always something calm about the way she moved—even when the entire office was falling apart around her.
She had worked for Angel for years.
Long enough to know when Angel was annoyed by the way she placed her coffee cup.
Long enough to recognize the difference between Angel's I'm listening silence and her I don't want to talk about this silence.
And long enough to know that the woman behind the office door rarely let anyone see what she was actually feeling.
Grace stopped outside Angel's office.
She knocked once.
"Come in."
Grace opened the door.
Angel was sitting behind her desk.
She looked exactly like the person everyone at Velora knew her to be.
Composed.
Controlled.
Untouchable.
She was tall, with an athletic build that was noticeable even beneath her perfectly tailored clothes. Her long hair fell naturally over her shoulders, dark against the light coming through the windows behind her.
But it was her eyes that people remembered.
Hazel.
Sharp.
Quiet.
They seemed to notice everything without giving anything away.
Angel's face was calm as she read through a report, her expression giving nothing away.
Grace stepped inside.
"Morning."
Angel lifted her eyes from the document.
"Morning."
Grace glanced at her tablet.
"Your ten-thirty meeting has been moved to eleven."
"Alright."
"And HR is sending the new senior employee up at ten."
Angel returned her attention to the report.
"What department?"
"Executive operations."
Angel nodded.
"Good."
Grace watched her for a second.
"You don't want to know her name?"
Angel looked up.
"Should I?"
Grace smiled.
"I suppose not."
Angel returned to her work.
Grace shook her head.
"You know, most people would at least pretend to be curious."
"I'm sure HR has done enough pretending for both of us."
Grace laughed quietly.
"There she is."
Angel raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"Nothing."
Grace turned toward the door.
Before leaving, she glanced back at Angel.
For a brief moment, her expression softened.
She had known Angel long before the woman sitting behind this desk became one of the most powerful people in the company.
She knew the person underneath the title.
The person almost nobody else got to see.
"Don't work through lunch again."
Angel didn't look up.
"No promises."
"I knew you'd say that."
Grace left.
The door closed behind her.
Angel continued reading.
She had no idea who was about to walk through her door.
The elevator doors opened again.
Ivy stepped out.
An employee passing by gave her a polite nod and directed her toward the CEO's office.
"Down the hall. Last door on the left."
"Thank you."
Ivy smiled.
She walked slowly down the corridor.
Her heels made quiet sounds against the floor.
She looked around once.
Everything was so quiet up here.
Almost unnaturally so.
At the end of the hallway stood a large wooden door.
A simple plaque beside it read:
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Ivy stopped.
She glanced at her folder.
Then at the door.
She took one final breath.
This was it.
She lifted her hand.
Knocked.
"Come in."
The voice from inside was calm.
Ivy opened the door.
And stopped.
Her entire body went still.
Across the room, Angel slowly lifted her eyes from the document in front of her.
For a second, neither woman understood what they were seeing.
Then Angel's fingers loosened around the pen in her hand.
Her expression barely changed.
But her eyes did.
Ivy stared at her.
The woman behind the desk looked different now.
Older.
More confident.
More powerful.
But there was no mistaking her.
It was Angel.
The same Angel.
The woman Ivy had once loved.
The woman whose memory had followed her long after she'd left.
Ivy's gaze slowly moved toward the nameplate on the desk.
ANGEL
Her breath caught.
She hadn't known.
She hadn't known who Velora's CEO was.
She hadn't even known that Angel worked here.
And now she was standing inside Angel's office.
Angel finally spoke.
"Ivy."
Her voice was quieter than before.
Ivy swallowed.
"Angel..."
The name barely escaped her lips.
Neither woman moved.
Years had passed.
Lives had changed.
And yet somehow, in that single moment, the distance between the past and the present disappeared.
Outside the office, Grace was walking down the corridor.
She glanced through the partially open door.
And stopped.
Her eyes fell on Ivy.
For the first time that morning, Grace completely forgot about her schedule.
She knew that face.
She knew that woman.
And judging by the look on Angel's face, Angel knew her too.
Grace's fingers tightened around her tablet.
She stared at the two women in silence.
Neither Angel nor Ivy noticed her standing there.
For them, the rest of the world had disappeared.
There was only the woman from the past standing on the other side of the room.
A familiar stranger.
