๐ VEINS OF SHADOWFIRE
Nyra Vale woke up with a sharp inhale, her body jerking upright as if she had been pulled back from somewhere she wasnโt supposed to be.
Her room was quiet.
Too quiet.
The kind of silence that pressed against your ears until it almost became a sound of its own.
She didnโt move at first.
Her fingers slowly curled into the sheets beneath her as she listened.
Nothing.
No footsteps.
No wind.
Not even the faint hum of the city outside.
Justโ
her heartbeat.
Thud.
โฆpauseโฆ
Thud.
Nyra frowned.
That wasnโt right.
Her hand moved to her chest, pressing flat against the fabric of her shirt.
There it was again.
Thudโฆ Thudโฆ Thud.
Too heavy.
Tooโฆ deliberate.
Her breath hitched slightly.
โ...No,โ she whispered, more to herself than anything else.
But the sound didnโt convince her.
Because deep downโ
she already knew.
That rhythmโฆ
wasnโt hers.
Across the cityโ
far beneath the surface, where light had long since been forgottenโ
something stirred.
A place carved from stone and shadow, older than memory itself.
And within itโ
a figure stood motionless.
Untilโ
his eyes snapped open.
Draven Nightfall did not breathe.
Not the way humans did.
But something in his chest tightened anyway.
A disturbance.
Sharp.
Unfamiliar.
Wrong.
His jaw clenched as a flicker of darkness coiled around his fingers, then vanished just as quickly.
Unstable.
That hadnโt happened in centuries.
โ...Impossible,โ he murmured, his voice low, edged with something dangerously close to anger.
He lifted his hand slowly, staring at it as if expecting an answer.
Nothing.
And yetโ
everything felt off.
Like a part of him had been moved.
Or worseโ
taken.
Back in her room, Nyra stood in front of the mirror.
She didnโt remember getting out of bed.
Didnโt remember crossing the room.
But there she was.
Staring.
Her reflection stared back.
Same pale skin.
Same unreadable eyes.
Same stillness.
โGet a grip,โ she muttered under her breath.
But even as she said itโ
her reflection didnโt.
Move.
At.
The.
Same.
Time.
Nyra froze.
Her breath caught in her throat as something cold slid down her spine.
โโฆNo.โ
This time, it came out quieter.
Almost afraid.
She raised her hand slowly.
Her reflection followed.
Perfect.
Normal.
Like nothing had happened.
But Nyra didnโt lower her hand.
Because for that one secondโ
that one impossible secondโ
she had seen it.
Delay.
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Thenโ
darkness swallowed the room.
Somewhere deeper than dreamsโ
a voice echoed.
Not loud.
Not clear.
But felt.
Like it wrapped itself around her ribs and tightened.
โReturnโฆ what is mineโฆโ
Nyraโs knees nearly gave out.
Her hand shot to her chest again, gripping hard enough to hurt.
โStopโโ
The word broke.
Because the pain that followed wasnโt normal.
It wasnโt sharp.
It wasnโt dull.
It wasโ
alive.
Below the earthโ
Draven turned sharply.
His expression had shifted.
Gone was the still, controlled calm.
Something darker had taken its place.
Something aware.
He could feel it now.
Clearer than before.
A pull.
A thread.
Thinโ
but unbreakable.
Connecting him toโ
something.
Or someone.
His lips parted slightly as realization sank in.
Slow.
Dangerous.
โโฆYou shouldnโt exist.โ
Back aboveโ
Nyra collapsed to her knees.
Her vision blurred, black creeping in at the edges.
Her heartbeatโ
noโ
the heartbeatโ
grew louder.
Stronger.
Faster.
Thud.
Thud.
THUD.
And thenโ
silence.
When she opened her eyes againโ
everything was still.
Calm.
Normal.
Like nothing had happened.
But her hand was still pressed to her chest.
And this timeโ
she didnโt question it.
Didnโt deny it.
Didnโt try to explain it away.
Because nowโ
she could feel it clearly.
Beneath her ribs.
Deep.
Hidden.
Something that did not belong to her.
Miles awayโ
Draven closed his eyes slowly.
A faint, dangerous smile touched his lips.
Not warm.
Not kind.
Hungry.
โI will find you.โ
And somewhere between shadow and silenceโ
something ancient shifted.
Watching.
Waiting.
Because whatever had awakened that nightโ
was never meant to be found
