THE FIFTH CONCUBINE

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

For four years, Giselle Moon has been the fifth and least-favoured concubine of Emperor Elián Valeria. At thirty, she has resigned herself to being invisible. The Emperor has barely spoken to her, and Giselle is certain he dislikes her—perhaps even hates her. She asks for nothing and expects nothing. Until Elián returns from a two-year war. Before the entire Imperial household, he takes Giselle by the wrist and leads her to his private quarters. There, behind closed doors, he kisses the woman he has ignored for four years. Giselle is left with one question: Why her? In Valeria, the world's greatest empire, nothing concerning the Emperor is ever simple. Six states stand united beneath the Valerian Crown, while an ancient tradition brings concubines from the five outer states into the Imperial household to preserve the fragile balance of power. Giselle was meant to be nothing more than a forgotten name within that tradition. But after that night, Elián begins to seek her presence. What grows between them is not an instant romance, but a quiet, unexpected bond between an Emperor burdened by an empire and a woman who never expected to matter to him. Yet in the Imperial Palace, being noticed can be more dangerous than being forgotten. And once the Emperor remembers Giselle Moon, there is no going back.

Chapter 1

The palace gardens had become my sanctuary during his absence. Beneath the drifting canopy of cherry blossoms, I savored the rare luxury of silence, cradling a porcelain cup of jasmine tea as though it could keep the world at bay. For one fleeting moment, peace felt less like a dream and more like something I could touch.

Then fate came knocking with iron-shod boots.

The stillness shattered beneath the shrill voice of an imperial retainer.

"I proclaim the victorious return of His Imperial Majesty from the two-year campaign!"

The words struck like thunder across a cloudless sky.

My fingers tightened around the fragile porcelain.

The great bronze gates groaned open with the weight of history itself, their echoes rolling through the courtyard like distant war drums. Through them emerged Emperor Elián.

He looked less like a man returning home than a sovereign carved from conquest itself.

Tall and unyielding, he wore imperial robes scarred by battle, the once-pristine black silk stained by dust and the ghosts of distant battlefields. Gold embroidery traced dragons along the hem, dulled but not diminished. His raven-black hair was bound neatly at his nape, though rebellious strands framed a face sharpened by war. Most unsettling of all were his eyes—an impossible shade of imperial violet, cold enough to freeze fire, sweeping across the courtyard with the ruthless precision of a hawk claiming the skies.

A king's gaze could weigh more heavily than a thousand swords.

No one moved quickly enough.

As though the heavens themselves had issued a decree, servants collapsed into deep kowtows. The imperial consorts followed in terrified unison. Silk whispered against stone. Heads lowered. Breaths halted.

Only I remained seated beneath the blossoms, my teacup suspended halfway to my lips.

The silence that followed could have smothered a heartbeat.

The retainer cleared his throat—a single sound, yet loud as a judge's gavel.

Ice flooded my veins.

The porcelain slipped from my trembling fingers, striking the saucer with a sharp, humiliating clatter that seemed to reverberate through the entire courtyard. My body reacted before my thoughts could catch up. I fell from my seat into a hurried bow, forehead nearly striking the cold marble.

Too late.

His gaze had already found me.

It lingered for the briefest heartbeat.

There was no flicker of recognition. No warmth. No anger, even.

Only calculation.

The kind of detached scrutiny a monarch reserves for pieces upon a chessboard.

Around me, the other four imperial consorts remained motionless. One, a golden-haired beauty, quietly wept into the stone, tears darkening the marble beneath her brow. Another pressed her forehead so forcefully against the ground that it seemed she wished to disappear into it entirely. Fear had stripped them of pride long ago.

The Emperor spoke not a single word.

He walked past us with measured steps, each footfall echoing through the courtyard like the tolling of a funeral bell. The air itself seemed to retreat before him. Every servant held their breath, as though even breathing without permission was courting death.

He ascended the steps toward the Dragon Throne.

One step.

Then another.

At the final step...

He stopped.

An almost imperceptible pause.

His head turned, ever so slightly.

Those violet eyes settled upon my bowed figure once more.

This time...

They remained there a heartbeat longer than courtesy—or indifference—required.

In the imperial court, even the smallest hesitation could become tomorrow's execution. After all, when the tiger pauses before its prey, the forest forgets how to breathe.

I became anxious. In my internal monologue, "No God! Please not today! Please save from the emperor wrath. He is avoiding me for last four year since I came. Let him please avoid my existence once more. I beg you."

A cold knot tightened beneath my ribs.

No... Dear God, not today.

Spare me this once.

Shield me from the Emperor's wrath.

For four years I have lived as though I were a ghost haunting his palace—seen by everyone, acknowledged by no one. He never summoned me. Never spoke my name. Never spared me so much as a passing glance. Let today be no different. Let me remain invisible.

I ask for nothing more.

My breath snagged painfully in my throat.

The courtyard seemed to exhale its very soul, surrendering to a silence so oppressive it threatened to crush bone. Every servant remained frozen in submission. Every concubine dared not lift her head. Even the birds nesting among the flowering branches abandoned their songs, as though nature itself understood that when an emperor hesitates, fate sharpens its blade.

Emperor Elián said nothing.

He did not summon me.

He did not pronounce judgment.

Yet neither did he move.

That stillness frightened me far more than fury ever could.

The empire whispered countless tales of the man upon the Dragon Throne. They said his anger was a raging inferno—but his silence...

His silence was the calm before kingdoms burned.

From the corner of my eye, I caught the Emperor's favored consort stealing a cautious glance upward. Her golden lashes trembled, still wet with tears of relief and devotion. Confusion flickered across her delicate features when she realized the Emperor's attention had never settled upon her.

It rested upon me.

Me.

The forgotten concubine.

The one left to gather dust in the farthest wing of the palace, where even memories rarely wandered. A flower planted in barren soil, expected neither to bloom nor to wither—merely to exist.

As quickly as she had looked, the favored consort lowered her head again, fearful that even witnessing this moment might invite misfortune. In the imperial palace, curiosity was often the first step toward the grave.

Above us, the cherry blossoms stirred beneath a reluctant breeze.

Petals broke free from their branches and drifted downward in slow, mournful spirals, pale as funeral offerings scattered upon a fresh tomb. One settled beside my trembling hand. Another brushed the sleeve of the Emperor's battle-worn robe before surrendering to the stone below.

The blossoms bore silent witness.

Whether they had gathered for a homecoming...

Or an execution...

Not even Heaven seemed willing to reveal.

Cherry blossom petals circled through the air, settling in my hair and upon my shoulders like pale ghosts paying silent homage to the condemned.

The chill crawling beneath my skin had nothing to do with the breeze.

It came from him.

From the weight of that relentless gaze, even though my forehead remained bowed to the stone.

Warm sunlight bathed the courtyard, yet gooseflesh prickled along my arms. My fingers dug into the earth until the soil packed beneath my nails. They trembled despite every desperate effort to still them.

Don't move.

Don't breathe too loudly.

Don't give him another reason to notice you.

Then, from the corner of my lowered vision, one of the imperial guards shifted.

Only an inch.

A movement so slight that no ordinary observer would have noticed. Yet it was enough to interrupt the Emperor's line of sight for the briefest heartbeat.

Mercy.

Small.

Dangerous.

Deliberate.

A surge of gratitude nearly overwhelmed me.

Thank you...

Whoever you are... thank you.

At that moment, the guard seemed less like a soldier and more like a savior Heaven had quietly placed between me and certain ruin.

But mercy was a luxury the imperial court rarely permitted.

This was a test.

Not one spoken aloud.

The deadliest tests never were.

A single step echoed across the marble.

My heart lurched so violently I thought everyone in the courtyard must surely hear it.

No...

Please... don't come any closer.

Please...

The entire courtyard seemed to inhale as one, then forgot how to breathe.

Another measured footstep.

Then—

Silence.

His polished black boots stopped scarcely three feet from where I knelt.

Close enough that I could see the faint dust gathered along the leather.

Close enough to smell steel, leather, and the lingering scent of smoke that clung to his robes like a second skin.

The embroidered hem of his imperial robe drifted forward, brushing lightly against the sleeve of my dress.

The touch was featherlight.

Accidental...

Or intentional.

With him, no one could ever tell.

Your Majesty... why me?

Your beloved consorts are behind you.

The ones who have counted the days until your return... the ones worthy of standing beside an emperor.

I am no one.

Please... pretend I do not exist as you have for the past four years.

Go to them.

No one in the palace could claim to understand Emperor Elián.

To presume his intentions was to wager one's life against impossible odds.

Nearby, a servant's body suddenly gave way.

She collapsed without so much as a cry, her face drained of all color. Two attendants caught her before she struck the marble, lowering her soundlessly as though afraid even the noise of her fall might offend the Emperor.

Still...

He did not speak.

The silence stretched until it became unbearable, tightening around my chest like invisible chains.

Yet I could feel those impossible violet eyes upon me.

Watching.

Measuring.
