Chapter One
THE BIRTHDAY PARTY
Liana had always believed that love was supposed to feel safe.
She had grown up in a small, comfortable home where they didn’t have much, but somehow, there was always enough.
Enough food on the table.
Enough laughter in the living room.
Enough love to make their little home feel bigger than it really was.
Her family wasn’t rich. They were simply a middle-class family who worked hard for everything they had. But Liana had never felt poor.
Not with her mother’s warm hugs.
Not with her father’s quiet sacrifices.
Not with her younger brother’s constant teasing.
Home was home.
And Liana loved it.
“Liana!”
Her mother’s voice came from downstairs.
“I’m coming!”
She hurried down the stairs, still fixing her hair.
The moment she entered the dining room, her mother looked up from the kitchen.
“There you are. Come and eat before the food gets cold.”
“Mum, I’m coming.”
“You’ve been saying that for five minutes.”
Her younger brother, Noah, laughed.
“Mum, she was probably busy texting her boyfriend.”
Liana stopped.
“Excuse me?”
Noah grinned.
“Ethan.”
Their father chuckled from his seat.
“Leave your sister alone.”
Liana rolled her eyes and sat down.
Her mother placed a plate in front of her.
“Eat.”
“Thank you, Mama.”
She picked up her spoon.
Her mother sat beside her.
“So, today is the big day.”
Liana smiled.
“Ethan’s birthday.”
“Four years together and you still get that smile whenever you mention his name.”
Liana looked down shyly.
“He’s good to me.”
Her father glanced at her.
“Four years is a long time.”
“I know.”
“And you still love him?”
Liana didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.”
Her answer came so quickly that everyone laughed.
Noah shook his head.
“See love.”
Liana threw a small piece of bread at him.
“Eat your food.”
Everyone laughed again.
Liana smiled.
Four years.
She and Ethan had been together for four years.
They had grown together, fought, forgiven each other, celebrated birthdays and anniversaries, and shared countless memories.
She believed she knew him.
She believed he knew her.
She believed their relationship was strong enough to survive anything.
She had no idea how wrong she was.
Her phone suddenly vibrated on the table.
She looked down.
Ethan
She smiled immediately.
“Who is it?” Noah asked.
“Nobody.”
“Nobody has a heart beside their name?”
Liana glared at him.
“Mind your business.”
She opened the message.
Ethan: Don’t forget tonight, baby.
Liana smiled.
Liana: I won’t. I’ll be there.
A few seconds later, another message appeared.
Ethan: I can’t wait to see you.
Her heart warmed.
She locked her phone and placed it beside her plate.
Her mother watched her carefully.
“You really love him.”
Liana nodded.
“I do.”
Grace reached over and gently squeezed her hand.
“Then always remember something, my daughter.”
Liana looked at her.
“What’s that?”
“Love someone with your whole heart, but never lose yourself because of them.”
Liana smiled.
“I won’t.”
Her mother smiled back.
None of them knew how soon those words would become important.
⸻
That Evening
Liana stood in front of her mirror, getting ready.
Her room was covered with clothes she had tried on and rejected.
She finally settled on a simple but beautiful outfit.
Nothing too extravagant.
Just her.
She looked at herself one last time before grabbing her purse.
Her phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Baby.”
Ethan.
Liana smiled.
“Hi.”
“Are you ready?”
“Almost.”
“Don’t keep me waiting.”
She laughed.
“It’s your birthday. You should be patient.”
“I’ve been waiting all day.”
“You’ll survive.”
“I don’t know about that.”
She laughed again.
“I’ll see you soon.”
“Okay. Love you.”
“Love you too.”
She ended the call.
Then she walked downstairs.
Her mother was the first person to see her.
Grace’s face immediately lit up.
“Oh, Liana.”
“What?”
“You look beautiful.”
Liana smiled.
“Thank you.”
Her father looked up from the sofa.
“Wow.”
Noah whistled.
“Ethan is lucky.”
“Stop it.”
Her mother walked toward her and adjusted her hair.
“Have fun tonight.”
“I will.”
“And don’t stay too late.”
Her father added, “Call us when you’re leaving.”
“I will, Daddy.”
She hugged her mother.
Then her father.
Then Noah.
“Bye, everyone.”
“Bye, my baby,” her mother called after her.
Liana smiled as she walked outside.
She had no idea that she was walking toward the night that would change her life forever.
⸻
The birthday party was being held at one of the city’s most popular luxury club-and-hotel establishments.
The lower floor was alive with music, bright lights and people celebrating.
Upstairs were private hotel rooms and suites, reserved for guests who wanted more privacy.
Ethan had rented a private section of the club for his birthday.
When Liana entered, she immediately heard music blasting from the speakers.
People were laughing.
Dancing.
Drinking.
And in the middle of it all stood Ethan.
The birthday boy.
The moment he saw her, his face lit up.
“Baby!”
Liana smiled.
“Happy birthday.”
He walked over and hugged her.
“You came.”
“Of course I came.”
She handed him a beautifully wrapped box.
“Here.”
He looked at it.
“You got me something?”
“Open it.”
Ethan smiled and opened the box.
Inside was a watch.
His eyes widened.
“Liana…”
“You like it?”
“I love it.”
He hugged her again.
“Thank you.”
She smiled against his shoulder.
For a moment, everything felt perfect.
Then someone called her name.
“Liana!”
She turned around.
Chloe.
Her best friend.
Liana smiled immediately.
“Chloe!”
They hugged.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” Chloe said.
“I’m here now.”
Chloe smiled.
Then she looked at Ethan.
“Happy birthday.”
“Thank you.”
She handed him a small black box.
“I got you something.”
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a silver ring.
His expression changed for a second.
Then he smiled.
“Wow.”
“Put it on.”
He slipped the ring onto his finger.
Liana looked at it.
“It’s beautiful.”
Chloe smiled.
“I’m glad you like it.”
Liana didn’t notice the way Chloe’s eyes stayed on Ethan.
She didn’t notice the brief glance they exchanged.
She didn’t notice the secret between them.
Because Liana trusted them.
She trusted her boyfriend.
And she trusted her best friend.
Two people she never imagined could hurt her.
But tonight, one of them would betray her.
And the other would help destroy the life she thought she knew.
