Chapter 1 -outcast’s return
The wind tore across the jagged cliffs of Kaelmar's Reach, whipping Ryn's dark cloak into ragged flaps. He walked alone along the crumbling stone paths, each footfall hollow against the echoing cliffs. For five long years, the exiled warrior had wandered the northern wastelands, carrying nothing but his blades, his scars, and the memories of a life he had failed to protect.
The village of Tharwen lay sprawled beneath him like a fragile toy, a scattering of smoke and torchlight against the dark. The people there were small, unaware of the storms that clawed the horizon, and unaware of the marauders who would soon descend upon them. Ryn had heard the distant cries as he crested the ridge, the smell of smoke sharp in the cold night air.
He moved with a predator's grace, the weight of his exile sharpening every sense. The villagers were unprepared: carts overturned, thatched roofs smoldering, and desperate faces pressed against windows and doors. Yet when Ryn stepped from the shadows, something in the chaos paused. A figure in tattered crimson swung a rusted sword toward him—too slow, too uncoordinated.
Ryn's blade caught the marauder's swing midair. A single movement, fluid and precise, ended the attack and sent the assailant sprawling into the dirt. The other marauders froze, sensing the predator that had entered their midst.
The battle was brief but brutal. Ryn moved like a storm incarnate—flesh and steel blending in a dance of death. Every strike carried a lifetime of skill, honed in endless wars he would never forget. Yet, as each marauder fell, he felt a tug deep in his chest, a whisper of hunger, cold and insistent, unlike anything he had felt before.
When the last marauder collapsed, Ryn stumbled, a metallic taste in his mouth. His vision blurred. From the rubble of a destroyed granary, a faint, glowing object caught his eye—a crown, black as obsidian, etched with sigils that twisted like living shadows.
He approached it with caution, instincts screaming both warning and curiosity. The moment his fingers brushed the cold metal, the air around him shimmered. His bones sang with a strange energy, and a voice, deep and ancient, echoed in his mind:
"I have waited... and you... will bear me."
Pain and power collided in a single heartbeat. Ryn fell to his knees, clutching the crown as if it might crush him or lift him from the ground. The sigils pulsed, feeding on his heartbeat, threading into his very soul. His strength surged unnaturally; a scream ripped from his lungs, but it was not entirely his own.
The villagers, emerging from hiding, stared in awe and terror. Their savior was no longer simply a man—they saw the glow of something ancient and terrifying, a warrior transformed. And in that instant, Ryn knew he was no longer entirely himself. The Hollow Crown had chosen him.
Yet in the depths of his mind, a whisper lingered—a warning, a memory, a shadow of the tyrant king it had once ruled. Power had a cost. And Ryn's broken body would pay it, one bloody battle at a time.
