Summary

There's a sound the rink makes before anyone drops into the pack, a packed arena figuring out who it loves. Under the glitter and the bruises, something real is happening, women who skated because it was theirs, under names they gave themselves, in front of crowds who came back because none of it was fake. She's the reason the cameras started showing up. Sun bleached, salt air, the kind of star kids draw in their notebooks. She didn't get built for a poster. She just looks like one. Then the woman who built this world was gone, and the vote that followed happened too fast for anyone to ask the right questions. Within a season there's a new team on the map, fully funded, fully outfitted, with its own Face, poised, polished, built to answer a question nobody asked. What if there's a safer, more marketable way to be a woman on wheels? The season doesn't hold still. A patch here, a strap loosened there, nothing anyone can call unfair on its own. Sex sells, and the only difference between these two conferences is which one is honest about it. Two conferences. Two versions of what a woman on skates is allowed to be. Pick your side before the season starts, because once the whistle blows, the rink picks for you.

Preface - National Bout League

The National Bout League brings eight teams together across two conferences and one increasingly valuable prize. Built from roller derby’s mix of speed, contact, personality and self-invention, the NBL has grown into a national professional competition without losing the names, colors and rivalries that made the sport worth watching in the first place. Its rules share the same foundation as traditional flat-track derby, but the league has developed its own professional variations around roster management, scheduling and competition.

New this season is the Starting Six, with each team declaring one jammer, four active defenders and a Rotational Defender who can cycle in and out between jams. Only five skaters are on the track at once, giving teams more tactical flexibility while allowing bruised or winded defenders to recover without being permanently replaced.

The league is split between the Sunset Conference in the West and the Liberty Conference in the East. Each team faces its conference rivals through the regular season before the top two advance to a conference final. The winners meet for the championship.

At the center of it all is the Kingpin Trophy, awarded to the team that survives the season and wins the Kingpin Cup. Part joke, part crown and now the most recognizable piece of hardware in the league, it has become the thing every roster claims not to think about until the moment it is close enough to touch.

Eight teams begin the season. Two will reach the final. One leaves with the Kingpin.

THE WOMAN HE BOUGHT

Sharda: This reads like if it's the author's first book. There were a lot of missing things to make the story feel real. I appreciated the good grammar and the storyline was good. It just needed some more, the book felt a bit rushed.
