After eating the last piece of bread, I gulped down my milk in one go.
I placed the plate in the kitchen and wiped my mouth before looking at my bag one last time.
Everything was there.
Books. Pens. My schedule.
I reached for the ash-gray jacket hanging over the back of a chair.
My eyes traced the diamond-shaped badge sewn onto the left side of the jacket.
A red lion sat in the middle of it, sharp and proud, like it naturally belonged there.
Vanguard Academy.
A school filled with rich kids, and somehow, people like me got in through a scholarship.
I smiled faintly and slipped the jacket on.
I grabbed my bag, locked the door behind me, and walked out.
---
The moment I arrived, I understood why people talked about Vanguard like it was more than a school.
The gates were enormous.
The Vanguard lion was engraved above the gates, shining against the morning light.
I stared at it for a second.
So this was Vanguard.
I pushed the gate open.
The smell of expensive perfumes and the laughter of students welcomed me.
Students walked around in their ash uniforms like they owned the place. Some were talking about vacations. Others were laughing about parties and shopping trips.
I adjusted my bag on my shoulder and kept walking.
At the administrative office, a woman looked through my papers.
Her eyes stopped at one particular word.
Scholarship.
It was only for a second, but I noticed the change in her expression.
She handed me a locker key, my books, and a neatly folded scheme of work.
“Don't lose these,” she said. “Replacements aren't free.”
I looked at her.
Then at the books in my arms.
A small smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.
“Got it.”
I turned and left.
I found my locker and opened it, placing my books inside.
Two students nearby were talking.
“Are you coming to the gala?”
“Of course. My dad already got me a VIP card.”
“Lucky you.”
“I know. I'm waiting to see what Jax wears. Maybe he'll show up in the latest Chanel collection.”
I stared at my locker.
Apparently, even a school gala needed a fashion forecast.
I shut the locker and headed to my first class.
I entered quietly and chose an empty seat.
A few girls glanced at me.
One whispered something to another.
They both glanced at my badge.
I pretended not to notice.
I pulled out my notebook.
“My summer was amazing,” one girl said.
“Not as amazing as mine,” another replied proudly. “My dad bought me an original Dior jacket worn by Zeke himself.”
She smiled proudly.
“Of course he did,” I muttered.
The girls immediately looked at me.
One covered her mouth.
I rolled my eyes and focused on my notebook.
A few minutes later, the teacher entered.
“Good morning, class.”
“Good morning, Mrs. Williams.”
She placed her books on the desk and turned toward the board.
“Okay, students. Today, we're learning about rock formation.”
I wrote the topic down and rested my chin against my palm.
Mrs. Williams continued explaining the lesson, occasionally turning toward the board before facing the class again.
I tapped my pen lightly against the desk.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
“So, can anyone tell me what they understand about rock formation?”
She turned toward the class.
Her eyes drifted across the room.
Then she sighed.
“Mia, put that down,” she said.
A girl near the window didn't even look up from her phone.
“Make me.”
A few students laughed.
Mrs. Williams stared at her.
“Mia.”
The girl rolled her eyes.
“Mind your business.”
More laughter filled the room.
Mrs. Williams tried to continue teaching.
But the classroom only got louder.
Students talked over her.
Someone threw a paper ball.
Another student laughed loudly.
Mia continued scrolling through her phone.
I looked at Mrs. Williams.
She looked exhausted.
My tapping stopped.
I tightened my fingers around the pen.
Once.
Twice.
I glanced around the classroom.
Nobody cared.
I took a slow breath.
I couldn't take it anymore.
“CAN'T YOU ALL SHUT UP?”
I yelled.
