Summary

After WW2, Aletta’s father comes home from war. She has no memory of him, only the image of a father, but he is nothing like she had imagined- or hoped. The moment her father arrives, everything changes horribly. Her childhood, her world, her home changes. The place she once knew as peaceful was now shattered by reality: illness, death, being a witness to a mysterious murder, and the demand to grow up. In desperation, she finds a place where reality seems to fade, and fantasy grows in a mythological forest that is dying. All while being a witness to a murder, having to choose whether to reveal the murderer or to keep it a secret. However, the deeper she goes into the fantasy, the more the line between reality and fantasy blurs. 1945 has many meanings, but the main one is: there comes a time when you must choose to stay quiet or to speak out the truth, even if the outcome is shattering.

Prologue

She was dying.

Her breathing was shallow and deep, with a subtle rasp at the end, while blood trickled out of her lips onto the ground below.

Her blood seeped into the dead ground and the roots within.

She stared at what remained in her left hand, a rose, a white rose slowly fading red beneath her blood. Her breathing quickened with a fading fear as she gripped the rose, the thorns piercing her hand.

She couldn’t care less.

“Sing me a song.” Her voice rasped to herself as blood painted the corner of her lips.

She began humming a slow melody. It was a hushed melody, one that felt like it could lull anyone’s doom into a peaceful sleep.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in a dark place where shadows lived freely. She could not laugh here, she could not cry here, but most importantly, she could not dream.

The little girl sought a place where she could see the sunlight, a place where she could laugh, a place where she could cry, and a place where she could dream.

But those are only dreams, and this is no fairytale.

How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...
