Chapter 1
⚔️ Chapter One: When the Sky SplitThe desert was quiet the morning the world changed.Elias Ward stood outside his small Yuma home, boots in the dust, coffee steaming in his hand, staring at a sky that didn’t look right. The sunrise usually rolled in soft and gold over the rooftops, but today the horizon glowed a deep, angry red — like embers breathing. He felt it before he saw it.
A pressureA weight.
Something old pushing against the world. The wind died.
The birds stopped.
Even the distant hum of traffic faded into silence. Then the sky split.A jagged tear of white fire ripped across the clouds, stretching from the mountains to the river. Elias dropped his coffee as the ground trembled beneath him. The air tasted like metal. The sun dimmed. And from the burning seam in the sky, something stepped through.A figure.Tall.
Skeletal.
Blindfolded. Its bones were wrapped in leather straps and rusted metal bands, each spike glinting in the red light. Smoke curled around its feet as it walked, and in its hand it carried a sword longer than any man was tall — a blade carvedwith symbols that pulsed like living fire.Elias couldn’t move.
Couldn’t breathe.
Couldn’t look away. The figure stopped at the edge of his street, turning its blindfolded skull toward him as if it could see straight through the cloth. The sword lowered. The air tightened. Elias felt something reach inside him — searching, weighing, judging. But nothing happened. The figure tilted its head, confused. The sword flickered.
The blindfold cracked.
And for the first time since creation, The Arbiter hesitated.A voice rolled across the desert, deep and ancient, like stone grinding against stone.“You cannot be judged.”Elias stumbled backward, heart pounding. “What are you?”The Arbiter stepped closer, fire swirling around its bones. “I am the reckoning of all things. The final measure. The hand that burns away the wicked.”It raised the sword.“But you… you are wrong.”The blade trembled in the Arbiter’s grip, sparks falling like dying stars. Elias felt heat wash over him, but it didn’t burn. It didn’t even sting. It felt familiar — like something he had known long ago but forgotten. The Arbiter’s voice cracked.
“You were judged before your time.”
The sky roared overhead. The tear widened. Flames poured down like rain. People screamed in the distance as the world began to unravel. But the Arbiter didn’t look at them.It looked only at Elias.“You are the fracture,” it said. “The one truth I cannot condemn.”Elias backed toward his door, shaking. “I don’t understand.”“You will,” the Arbiter whispered. “Because the world will burn until you do.”
