CHAPTER 28 THE WHISPER IN THE HALL
CHAPTER 28
THE WHISPER IN THE HALL
September had arrived quietly in Nevermore Valley.
The first hints of autumn had begun touching the trees surrounding Breedlove Manor. Leaves were turning at their edges, mornings carried a sharper chill, and the evenings seemed to arrive sooner than they had only weeks before.
Beyond the Manor, the valley was filled with the familiar signs of a new school year.
Children carried new books through the streets. Schoolrooms came alive once again with voices, footsteps, and the excitement of seeing old friends. For some, it was the beginning of another year. For others, it was the beginning of something entirely new.
Parents, grandparents, guardians, and teachers prepared their children for another season of learning and discovery.
It should have been a time of fresh beginnings.
Inside Breedlove Manor, however, the past refused to remain behind.
The letter discovered beneath the dust still rested upon the table.
Its edges were brittle. Its paper had yellowed with age. The ink had faded in places, but the words remained surprisingly clear.
No one had touched it since it had been discovered.
Not because they feared damaging it.
Because something about it made them uneasy.
Nathaniel stood beside the window, staring into the darkening forest.
"Who wrote it?" he finally asked.
No one answered.
He turned toward Elias.
"And why was it hidden?"
Elias moved closer to the table.
"Perhaps the better question is who they were hiding it from."
Nathaniel's expression tightened.
"You think someone deliberately concealed it?"
"I think very few things survive inside this Manor by accident."
Nathaniel looked back at the letter.
There was something about Elias's words that disturbed him.
He had spent enough time within Breedlove Manor to understand that its secrets were rarely accidental.
Old objects appeared where they should not have been.
Doors seemed to lead somewhere different depending upon when they were opened.
And sometimes, the Manor seemed to remember things that everyone else had forgotten.
A faint sound came from somewhere beyond the room.
Creak.
Everyone froze.
Another creak followed.
Slow.
Measured.
As though someone were walking across the old floorboards outside.
Nathaniel looked toward the door.
"Did you hear that?"
Elias nodded.
The footsteps stopped.
Silence filled the room.
Then came a whisper.
So faint that it could almost have been the wind.
Almost.
The whisper came again.
"Don't..."
Nathaniel slowly approached the door.
"Don't what?"
There was no answer.
He placed his hand upon the handle.
Elias stepped forward.
"Wait."
Nathaniel paused.
The hallway beyond the door was empty.
Cold air drifted through the corridor, stirring the curtains at the far window.
No footsteps.
No shadow.
No person.
Nothing.
Nathaniel stepped into the hallway.
"Elias?"
"I'm here."
They moved together through the corridor.
The Manor seemed different now.
The familiar portraits hanging upon the walls appeared darker beneath the fading September light. Shadows stretched across the floorboards, and somewhere deep within the building, an old clock began striking the hour.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Nathaniel stopped counting.
Something had caught his attention.
At the far end of the corridor stood a door.
It was open.
Nathaniel stared at it.
"Was that door open before?"
Elias looked toward it.
"No."
"You've seen this room before?"
Elias shook his head.
"I've never seen that door open."
They approached cautiously.
The room beyond was small and almost completely dark.
Dust covered the furniture.
An old writing desk stood beneath the window.
Nathaniel entered first.
The air inside was colder than the hallway.
He took another step.
Then stopped.
Something rested upon the desk.
A black envelope.
His eyes narrowed.
Written across the front in faded ink were four words.
Nathaniel Aurelius Breedlove.
He stared at his name.
Elias stepped beside him.
"Don't open it."
Nathaniel glanced at him.
"Why?"
"Because whoever left it here knew exactly where we would find it."
Nathaniel looked back at the envelope.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
It looked remarkably similar to the writing on the letter they had discovered beneath the dust.
"Someone wanted me to find this."
Elias said nothing.
Nathaniel reached toward the envelope.
His fingers were only inches away when a sound came from inside the walls.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Nathaniel slowly lowered his hand.
The tapping stopped.
Neither man moved.
Then the envelope shifted.
Just slightly.
Nathaniel stared at it.
Elias took a step backward.
"Did you see that?"
Nathaniel nodded.
Neither of them spoke.
The black envelope remained upon the desk.
Waiting.
Outside the window, a cold September wind moved through the trees.
Leaves scraped against the glass like fingernails.
Then, from somewhere deep within the walls, came a whisper.
"Nathaniel..."
He turned sharply.
Nothing was there.
The whisper came again.
Closer this time.
"Nathaniel..."
Elias looked toward the doorway.
"That wasn't you."
"No."
The room seemed to grow colder.
Nathaniel looked at the envelope once more.
He understood something now.
The letter beneath the dust had not been the end of the mystery.
It had been an invitation.
And this envelope was the next step.
Somewhere within Breedlove Manor, something had been waiting for him.
Waiting for the right moment.
Waiting for September.
Waiting for him to listen.
Nathaniel reached for the black envelope.
And deep inside the Manor, something whispered his name one final time.
The Manor had spoken.
