PROLOGUE
THE LAST BREATH OF A GOD
Before the first kingdom was built, before the mountains had names, before the seas knew their shores, there was only darkness.
And within that darkness, there were two brothers.
The elder was called Aeorath.
The younger was called Nhal-Kor.
They were not born as mortals were born. No mother carried them. No father named them.
They simply existed.
Aeorath loved the emptiness.
Nhal-Kor hated it.
So Aeorath began to create.
He breathed once, and stars appeared.
He breathed again, and the darkness became sky.
With every breath, something new came into existence—oceans, mountains, forests, beasts, and finally the first living peoples.
Nhal-Kor watched.
At first, he admired his brother's work.
Then he began to envy it.
"You give them too much," Nhal-Kor said.
Aeorath looked upon the newborn world.
"They are free."
"Freedom is chaos."
"It is life."
Nhal-Kor smiled.
"Then I shall give them order."
Aeorath understood too late.
His brother had begun creating his own creatures—not from love, but from obedience.
Creatures that did not choose.
Creatures that did not question.
Creatures that existed only to serve.
The brothers fought.
Their war lasted longer than mortal history could ever remember.
Mountains were torn from the earth.
Oceans rose into the heavens.
Whole forests became ash.
The first kingdoms died before they were ever named.
And everywhere Nhal-Kor went, he whispered the same promise to the living:
Give me your freedom, and I will give you peace.
Thousands followed him.
Aeorath fought them.
But he could not destroy his brother.
Nhal-Kor had become part of creation itself.
So Aeorath made a decision that would shape the world forever.
He gathered the remaining light of his power into his hands.
The darkness trembled.
A tiny ember appeared between his palms.
It was no larger than a human heart.
It burned without consuming anything.
It illuminated everything.
Nhal-Kor stared at it.
"What have you done?"
Aeorath said nothing.
He opened his hands.
The ember became a flame.
And the flame became a prison.
Nhal-Kor screamed as his spirit was torn from his body.
He tried to escape.
He fought.
He cursed his brother.
He promised that he would return.
But Aeorath forced him into the heart of the Flame.
For the first time, Nhal-Kor was afraid.
"Brother!"
Aeorath looked at him through the fire.
"You wanted a world without freedom."
His voice was weak.
"So I will give you an eternity without it."
The Flame closed.
Silence returned.
But Aeorath was dying.
The war had taken almost everything from him.
With the last of his strength, he looked upon the world he had created.
He knew the Flame could never be destroyed.
He also knew that one day someone would find it.
So he divided the knowledge of its existence.
Five fragments.
Five peoples.
Five guardians.
The path to the Flame would never be complete unless the fragments were reunited.
And if they were ever reunited...
The prison would open.
Aeorath's final words were carried upon the wind:
"Let them search for the Flame.
But let them never know what they seek."
Then the creator of Vaeltharion closed his eyes.
His body became light.
The light became stars.
And the last star fell into the darkness.
For three thousand years, it never returned.
Until tonight.
The old Mim opened his eyes.
He had been asleep beneath the mountain for forty-seven years.
Yet the moment he awoke, he knew.
Something had changed.
The chamber around him was silent.
Ancient stone pillars disappeared into darkness above.
Thousands of tiny blue crystals illuminated the walls.
On those walls were paintings older than any living memory.
A god.
A flame.
Two brothers.
And beneath them, five symbols.
The old Mim slowly stood.
His bones protested.
His hands trembled.
But he did not care.
He turned toward the narrow opening at the far end of the chamber.
For the first time in centuries, moonlight entered the sacred vault.
The old Mim looked upward.
His luminous eyes widened.
Far beyond the mountains, something was burning across the heavens.
A star.
A star that should have been dead.
The old Mim whispered a single word.
"Nhal-Kor."
Behind him, something moved.
The ancient paintings began to glow.
One by one, the five symbols awakened.
The old Mim stumbled backward.
"No..."
He had spent his entire life believing the prison would never open.
He had spent centuries protecting the secret.
He had believed the other races could be kept away from the Flame forever.
But now he understood.
Someone had already found one of the fragments.
Perhaps two.
Perhaps more.
And somewhere beneath the mountains, deep below the oldest Mim settlement, a sound began to rise.
A heartbeat.
Slow.
Heavy.
Ancient.
Thum.
The old Mim froze.
Thum.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Thum.
The crystals flickered.
Then came a voice.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Almost gentle.
Almost human.
"Brother..."
The old Mim closed his eyes.
Three thousand years of silence had ended.
And somewhere beyond the mountains, the first star of a new age was falling.
The hunt for the Flame had begun.
