I can’t believe I just got fired. I didn’t do anything wrong. I practically lived at the bakery, I wasn’t even the manager, but I was pretty much running it. I was the one who came in when everyone called out. I went above and beyond my job description every day, making sure the next person coming in had everything they needed prepped and ready to go. The next few weeks I spent every minute trying to find a new job, but no one would hire me. I mean no one, I even applied for waitress positions, fast food, anything, but no one would hire me, they would just send emails saying I wasn’t the right fit. It made no sense.
To make things even worse my mother found out I was about to be kicked out of my apartment and insisted I move back home. I know I shouldn’t complain. Going home means a roof over my head and not sleeping in my car… But moving back home means living with my mom and the man she just married whose son bullied me all throughout high school. But unfortunately I didn’t have a choice, I got everything packed that I could fit in my car, then the building manager came and did a final inspection, okaying me leaving all my furniture, they were glad to keep my furniture, it meant they could charge the next tenant more for a furnished apartment. Once the inspection was over, I started making the dreaded drive home.
The whole way there I was so nervous. I’m just terrified of living in the same house as Austin. I haven’t seen him since the wedding and he was an ass to me then, so what’s going to happen with us living under the same roof?
As I pulled up to the house, I saw Collin standing on the front porch waiting for me. I went to get what I needed for the night when he stopped me. “Natalie, hold on just a minute.”
“Is something wrong Collin? Mom told me to come home.”
“Of course you are welcome here Natalie, you’re just going to be staying with Austin in the guest house.”
Fuck… “What? She didn’t say anything about that. I really can’t stay in the main house?”
“No, you can’t stay in the main house. You should be thanking me for letting you move into the guest house with Austin. Natalie, but if you’d prefer to sleep in your car, you can leave.”

“That’s more like it, now pull around to the guest house and I will meet you there.”
I put my bag back in the car and pulled around to the guest house. I can’t fucking believe this, did my mom know that this was the arrangement? I got out of my car and leaned against it as I waited for Collin. “Why haven’t you gone inside Natalie?”
“You said to meet you back here.”
“Let’s get you inside so I can go to bed.”
“Yes Sir, I’m sorry I got here so late.”
We walked inside, Austin was on the couch, “I thought you were fucking joking dad.”
“No Austin, I wasn’t joking, you are sharing the guest house with your new stepsister. Now show Natalie to her room and play nice.”
“Yes Sir.”
“Goodnight Natalie.”
“Goodnight, Sir.”
After Collin left, Austin got off the couch, “grab your shit and come on.”

I really thought my father was joking when he said Miriam’s daughter was moving in with me. Natalie was such an easy target in high school, we had so much fun messing with her.
