Chapter1:The Night I Changed

The moon had never looked so close.Lena Vale stood at the edge of the forest, staring up at the enormous silver disk hanging above the trees.Every wolf in Blackwood Territory knew what tonight meant. The First Shift. At eighteen, every wolf born with a wolf’s blood experienced their first transformation. It was supposed to be a celebration a moment when a young wolf finally met the creature that had lived inside them since birth. For Lena, it felt like a sentence. She rubbed her trembling palms against her dress.Behind her, music and laughter drifted from the pack house. Hundreds of wolves had gathered for the ceremony. Parents stood proudly beside their children. Friends whispered excitedly. The older wolves watched from the edges of the clearing, waiting to see whose wolf would emerge strong and whose would be weak.Lena had spent years wondering what hers would be.Strong?

Fast?Perhaps even powerful? She had never been particularly special. At least, that was what everyone had told her. “Lena!”She turned.Mara, her closest friend, hurried toward her, nearly tripping over the hem of her dress.

“There you are. I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”Lena forced a smile. “I’m fine.”“You’ve been staring at the moon for ten minutes.” “Maybe I’m trying to convince it not to embarrass me.”

Mara laughed. “You’ll be fine. Everyone is nervous.” Lena looked toward the pack house. Everyone except him. Even from this distance, she could feel Alpha Kael’s presence. The Alpha of Blackwood. He stood on the raised platform beside the pack elders, dressed entirely in black. He wasn’t smiling. He rarely did.

At twenty-five, Kael was already feared by neighboring territories. Stories about his strength had traveled far beyond Blackwood’s borders. Lena had never spoken more than a handful of words to him.Still, there was something about him that unsettled her. Whenever he entered a room, she felt as though some invisible part of her recognized him.She hated that feeling.

“Lena?” Mara’s voice brought her back. “What?”“You’re staring again.” “I’m not.””You absolutely are.” Lena looked away. “I just want tonight to be over.” Mara’s expression softened. “You’ll be okay.” Before Lena could answer, a deep howl rolled through the forest. Every conversation stopped. The elders had begun the ceremony. “Lena Vale!” Her name echoed across the clearing. Her stomach dropped.

Mara squeezed her hand. “Go.” Lena stepped forward. One step. Then another. The crowd parted as she walked toward the stone circle in the center of the clearing. She could feel hundreds of eyes following her. She hated it. An elderly woman stood inside the circle. Elder Elara. The oldest wolf in Blackwood. “Place your hand on the stone,” she instructed.

Lena swallowed.

The moonstone sat in the center of the circle, glowing faintly beneath the moonlight.

She placed her palm against it. Nothing happened. A murmur went through the crowd. Lena’s cheeks burned. Elder Elara frowned. “Wait.” Lena waited. Five seconds. Ten. Still nothing. Then CRACK.

The stone split beneath her hand.

Lena jumped back.

A sharp gasp swept through the crowd.

The moonstone wasn’t glowing anymore.

It was black.

A strange darkness crawled across its surface like ink spreading through water.

Elder Elara went pale.

“No.”

The word was barely audible.

Lena stared at her.

“What?”

The elder grabbed Lena’s wrist.

“What is your mother’s name?”

Lena blinked.

“Amara.”

The woman’s grip tightened.

“Your mother’s full name.”

“Amara Vale.”

Something flashed across Elder Elara’s face.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then the elder released her.

“We need to stop the ceremony.”

A roar of confusion erupted from the crowd.

But before anyone could move, pain exploded through Lena’s body.

She screamed.

Her knees hit the ground.

Something inside her awakened.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Her bones felt as though they were shifting beneath her skin, but this wasn’t like the stories she’d heard about transformation.

It was worse.

Far worse. The forest suddenly went silent.

No birds.

No insects.

Not even the wind. Lena lifted her head.

Every wolf in the clearing was staring at her.

Then her eyes began to burn.

A low growl escaped her throat.

Not human.

Not entirely wolf.

The moon above them suddenly turned crimson.

Someone screamed.

“The Blood Moon!”

Panic erupted.

But Lena couldn’t move.

She could hear everything.

Every heartbeat.

Every breath.

Every frightened whisper.

And underneath all of it

A voice.

Ancient.

Faint.

Coming from somewhere deep inside her.

Wake up.

Lena’s eyes widened.

Who are you?

The voice answered.

You already know.

Her vision went black.

And then she shifted.

Lena woke beneath the trees.

Her breathing came fast as she pushed herself upright.

The clearing was gone.

The celebration was gone.

Everyone was gone.

She looked down at herself.

Her clothes were torn, but she wasn’t injured.

“What happened?”

A twig snapped behind her.

Lena spun around.

Two golden eyes stared from the darkness.

A wolf stepped into the moonlight.

It was enormous.

Its fur was completely black, except for a thin silver marking running from its forehead to its nose.

Lena froze.

The wolf didn’t attack.

Instead, it lowered its head.

As though bowing.

Lena’s heart pounded.

“Are you… my wolf?”

The creature stared at her.

Then something strange happened.

Lena felt another presence.

Not inside her.

Outside.

A presence she had felt many times before.

She turned toward the direction of the pack house.

Her chest tightened.

Kael.

She didn’t know how she knew.

She simply did.

The black wolf suddenly growled.

Not at Lena.

At the darkness behind her.

Lena slowly turned.

A figure stood between the trees.

A man.

Tall.

Motionless.

Watching her.

She couldn’t see his face.

“Who are you?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he smiled.

“You finally awakened.”

Lena’s blood ran cold.

“What do you mean?”

The stranger stepped forward.

“You should never have survived this long.”

Before Lena could respond, a howl tore through the forest.

The stranger disappeared.

And moments later, wolves came crashing through the trees.

At the front was Kael.

His expression was colder than she’d ever seen it.

His eyes locked onto Lena.

Then his gaze dropped to the black wolf beside her.

His entire face changed.

Shock.

Fear.

Recognition.

He whispered a single word.

Not Lena’s name.

Not a command.

A name she had never heard before.

Moonborn.

Lena stared at him. What?” Kael looked toward the sky. The crimson moon was already fading. Then he looked back at her. For the first time since she’d known him, the Alpha looked genuinely afraid. “Everyone leave,” he ordered. No one moved. Kael’s voice thundered across the forest.

NOW!”The wolves scattered.Lena remained where she stood.“What is happening?”Kael approached her slowly.”Where is your mother?” Lena frowned. “She’s dead.” His jaw tightened. “When?” “Seventeen years ago.”Kael went completely still.

Then he looked at the black wolf beside her again. “That’s impossible.” “What is?” His eyes returned to hers. “The woman you believe was your mother…” He paused. “…wasn’t your mother.” Lena’s heart stopped. And somewhere deep within the forest, something answered with a howl.
