The Midnight Needle

The rain had been falling for hours.

It drummed against the narrow windows of my underground tattoo studio, turning the city above into a distant, muffled nightmare. Down here, beneath the old streets, there was only the smell of ink, antiseptic, damp stone—and tonight, something far more sinister.

Blood.

I noticed the smell before I heard the footsteps.

My fingers tightened around the silver needle in my hand.

The studio was usually my sanctuary. No one knew exactly where it was, and that was how I preferred it. The people who came to me knew better than to ask too many questions.

They came for tattoos.

They left carrying secrets.

I was the only one who knew that some of the symbols I carved into skin were more than decoration.

They were spells.

Fate Ink had been passed down through my family for generations. Ancient formulas. Ancient symbols. Ancient rules.

And I had spent years pretending that none of it existed.

Until tonight.

The door opened without a knock.

I froze.

A tall figure stepped into the dim light.

He was dressed in black, his shoulders broad beneath a rain-soaked coat. Two men stood behind him, both armed, both watching the room with the cold alertness of professional killers.

My hand slowly moved beneath the edge of the wooden workstation.

Toward my dagger.

Then the stranger removed his coat.

Dark blood covered the front of his crisp white shirt.

My breath caught.

He was wounded.

But that wasn’t what frightened me.

It was his eyes.

Storm-grey.

Cold.

Deadly.

I knew that face.

Everyone in this city knew it.

Julian Blackwood.

The heir—and now the most feared ruler—of the Blackwood criminal syndicate.

The man whispered about in underground clubs and private rooms.

The man whose name made enemies disappear.

The man who had no reputation for mercy.

He took one step toward me.

Then another.

I didn’t move.

“You’re bleeding on my floor,” I said.

His mouth curved into the faintest smile.

“You noticed.”

“I notice everything.”

His gaze moved over me slowly.

I hated the way my pulse reacted to it.

I was wearing a simple black shirt beneath my leather apron, my dark hair tied loosely behind my head. There was nothing about me that should have interested a man like Julian Blackwood.

Yet he stared as though he had walked into this room searching for one specific thing.

Me.

I lifted my chin.

“If you’re here for a tattoo, you’re going to have to wait.”

“I’m not here for a tattoo.”

“Then you’re wasting my time.”

One of his guards shifted.

Julian raised a hand.

The man immediately stopped.

Interesting.

Julian stepped closer.

His boots left small trails of rainwater across my floor.

Then his hand moved.

Steel flashed.

A blade appeared against my throat.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

The cold edge pressed lightly against my skin.

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t move.

I simply stared into the mirror behind him.

His reflection stood directly behind mine.

“They say,” he whispered, his voice deep and velvety, “you can rewrite fate with a needle, little painter.”

A shiver traveled down my spine.

I forced myself to remain calm.

“People say a lot of stupid things.”

“They also say you use ancient magic in your ink.”

Silence.

His eyes met mine through the reflection.

“Rumors,” I whispered.

“Then tell me I’m wrong.”

“I don’t explain myself to criminals.”

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, something dangerous flickered behind his eyes.

“Careful.”

I swallowed.

The blade remained against my throat.

“And you’re holding a knife against someone you need,” I said quietly. “That doesn’t make you look very intelligent.”

Something almost resembling amusement returned to his face.

“My men found three bodies tonight.”

My stomach tightened.

“That’s unfortunate.”

“They weren’t killed by bullets.”

I said nothing.

“They weren’t stabbed either.”

His voice lowered.

“Their hearts stopped after someone carved symbols into their skin.”

My fingers went cold.

He had found the bodies.

Of course he had.

Julian leaned closer.

“I’ve spent six months searching for the person responsible.”

I finally turned my head slightly.

“And what makes you think it’s me?”

His gaze dropped to my workstation.

To the silver needles.

To the small glass container of black ink sitting beside them.

Then back to my eyes.

“Because the dead men all carried the same symbol.”

He pulled the blade away from my throat.

For one second, I thought it was over.

Then he reached down and tore open the front of his blood-soaked shirt.

I stared.

A dark mark spread across his chest.

It wasn’t a tattoo.

It looked alive.

Black veins crawled outward from a central symbol, disappearing beneath his skin like poisonous roots.

My blood ran cold.

The Obsidian Curse.

I’d only seen it once before.

In an old family manuscript.

A curse powerful enough to consume a person’s life force.

A curse created through forbidden magic.

A curse that couldn’t be removed by ordinary medicine.

Julian watched my expression carefully.

“You recognize it.”

I forced my face to become blank.

“I recognize death when it sits on my couch.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You can remove it.”

“No.”

“You’re lying.”

“I don’t work for criminals.”

He stepped closer.

“I didn’t ask you to work for me.”

“Then why are you here?”

His gaze locked onto mine.

“Because you’re the only person in this city who can keep me alive.”

The words settled between us.

Heavy.

Impossible.

Dangerous.

I looked at the curse again.

The black veins had reached his ribs.

It was spreading.

Fast.

“If I help you,” I said, “the curse could transfer to me.”

“I know.”

“And if I fail?”

“You won’t.”

“You sound very confident.”

Julian’s eyes darkened.

“I didn’t come here because I was confident.”

He leaned toward me.

“I came here because I’m desperate.”

That admission shocked me more than the blade had.

Julian Blackwood didn’t look desperate.

He looked like a man who had never lost anything in his life.

Yet beneath the cold exterior, I could see something else.

Pain.

Fear.

And something far more dangerous.

Determination.

I turned toward my workstation.

My fingers hovered over the small vial of spell-infused black ink.

Every instinct told me to walk away.

But another voice whispered inside my head.

A voice I hadn’t heard since I was a child.

Fate always collects its debts.

I picked up the silver needle.

Julian watched silently.

“You sit,” I ordered.

His eyebrow lifted.

“You’re giving me orders?”

“You’re bleeding on my couch.”

A faint smile touched his lips.

“You really aren’t afraid of me.”

I looked directly into his storm-grey eyes.

“I should be.”

I dipped the needle into the magical ink.

“But I’m more afraid of what happens if I don’t help you.”

For the first time that night, Julian looked almost human.

Then he sat.

I stepped between his knees.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

His body radiated heat.

My breathing became shallow.

I pressed the silver needle against his cursed skin.

The moment the tip touched him, black smoke erupted beneath his skin.

Julian’s jaw clenched.

But he didn’t move.

I began carving.

Golden light slowly appeared beneath the needle.

Rune after rune.

Line after line.

The ancient Fate Ink awakened.

And as the golden symbols spread across Julian’s chest, something inside me awakened too.

Something I had spent my entire life trying to bury.

Something connected to the bloodline my family had died protecting.

I didn’t know it yet.

But the moment my needle touched Julian Blackwood’s skin, our fates had already become intertwined.

And there would be no going back.
