## THE PROTECTOR OF MY HEART## Chapter 1: The Spark in the Cafeteria

Noise, teenage energy, and the heavy smell of school lunch… The cafeteria was its usual chaotic self. Amidst the ear-splitting laughter, the clattering of silverware on plastic trays, and the hum echoing from the hallways, I sat at our usual table in the junior section. Normally, I was known as the vibrant, energetic Lucy who always radiated light to everyone around her. But today, keeping that bubbly mask on my face was harder than ever.

"Lucy, sweetie, are you even listening to me?"

Amanda leaned across the table, waving her hand in front of my face, which snapped me out of my trance. Brushing my straight, dark brown hair back over my shoulders—a stark contrast against my fair, porcelain skin—I forced a faint smile onto my face. I fixed my deep brown eyes on my friend’s curious face.

"I am listening, Amanda," I said, trying to maintain the innocent tone in my voice. "I was just… lost in thought."

"You're still looking over there," Amanda whispered, dropping her voice so only those at our table could hear. With a subtle tilt of her chin, she pointed toward the shadowed corner at the very back where the seniors ruled. "Don't look at him. He doesn't deserve it."

She was right. My eyes had involuntarily drifted back to that table. Sitting there was Lucas, my ex-boyfriend, the person who had completely derailed my life. Just a few weeks ago, he was the center of my universe, but with one unforgivable, selfish mistake, he had completely lost me. Every day since our breakup had felt like hell, but instead of accepting it, he only grew more reckless and aggressive. Even now, he was aggressively tapping his fork against his plate, staring daggers at me. The mixture of regret and controlling rage on his face was enough to make me tense up right where I sat.

But Lucas wasn’t the only one at that table.

Right next to him, leaning against the wall, sat Daniel. Daniel… Lucas’s childhood best friend, his confidant, his literal shadow. Waves of pitch-black hair fell over his forehead, and his sharp, prominent jawline set him apart from every other guy in this school. But the most captivating part about him was his deep, mysterious emerald-green eyes. Unlike Lucas, Daniel was quiet, calm, but possessed a protective strength that felt like it could explode at any moment. And the strange thing was, whenever Lucas watched me, I felt suffocated by his anger; yet whenever Daniel's green eyes met mine, a strange sense of safety bloomed inside me. Since the very first day Lucas introduced us, I had always felt deep down that Daniel was different from everyone else—especially his best friend.

"I'm going to grab a coffee, girls," I said, sliding out of my seat. I needed to get away from this suffocating atmosphere and Lucas’s piercing gaze as soon as possible.

As I walked toward the lunch line, I noticed my slender frame and striking posture drawing the eyes of a few junior guys, but I couldn't care less. I grabbed a cup of hot coffee. Clasping the paper cup tightly between my hands, I turned around, and my heart instantly skipped a beat.

Lucas had stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. He was making a move to walk straight toward me. My steps froze in the middle of the aisle, and I squeezed the coffee cup in my hands, completely paralyzed. Just as I panicked, thinking he was going to corner me and make another one of his desperate, pathetic excuses in front of everyone, something unexpected happened.

Daniel moved with a swiftness that completely cut Lucas off. His broad, towering frame stood directly in front of Lucas, blocking his path like an impenetrable wall. Leaving Lucas standing dumbfounded behind him, Daniel took long, confident strides straight toward me and stopped right in front of me. His deep green eyes glowed like emeralds, even under the dull cafeteria lights. Lowering his voice to a gentle, incredibly soft tone meant only for me, he asked:

"Hey, Lucy," he said, his eyes locked onto my brown ones. "How are you?"

Because of the height difference between us, I had to tilt my head up slightly to look at him. As my straight hair fell back over my shoulders, his protective stance completely dismantled my defenses. I let out a deep, shaky breath.

"I'm fine, Daniel," I said, the innocence in my voice echoing softly between us. "How are you?"

Before Daniel could even answer, Lucas impatiently and angrily forced his way back into the conversation. Lunging over Daniel’s shoulder, he tried to reach me.

"Lucy, please... Just give me two minutes. I can explain everything. What you saw that night, it wasn't what it looked like, I swear..."

Lucas's voice was desperate and dripping with regret, but for me, it was already too late. As he tried to take another step toward me, Daniel casually lifted his right arm. Placing his large palm firmly against Lucas’s chest, he pushed him back with a single, effortless motion. He didn't even bother to look back at Lucas; his deep green eyes remained entirely on me. A soft, warm smile—one that felt exclusive to me—appeared on his face.

"I'm doing great, Lucy. Seeing you made it better," Daniel said. His voice was intentionally loud enough to drive the guy behind him insane. "If this idiot is bothering you, just say the word. You know I can bury him right here."

Lucas glared at him from behind, completely losing his mind.

"Daniel, whose side are you on, man?! What the hell are you talking about?!"

I felt a sudden warmth behind my eyes as tears threatened to spill. Lucas’s sheer audacity was breaking me. Retreating into the safe, imposing shadow Daniel provided, I let out another desperate sigh:

"He is, Daniel. He is bothering me... Please don't let him near me."

The moment those words left my lips, I gripped my coffee cup tightly and accelerated my steps, practically running back to Amanda's table. But behind me, I could hear things spiraling out of control. Lucas tried to chase after me, yelling, "Lucy, wait! Don't go!" but Daniel grabbed him firmly by the shoulder and slammed him right back down toward the table. Daniel's voice sliced through the cafeteria noise like a blade:

"She told you to stop. Didn't you hear her? She said it's over, Lucas. You stay the hell away from her!"

Infuriated, Lucas grabbed Daniel by the collar, yanking his shirt as he hissed:

"Since when did you become her bodyguard, Daniel? She's my ex-girlfriend, know your place!"

"Your ex-girlfriend," Daniel repeated, emphasizing the word. His voice was so cold and resolute that it sent a shiver down my spine. He violently slapped Lucas’s hand off his collar. "And you lost her. Now sit your ass down."

As Lucas slumped back into his chair, red with fury, Daniel turned around. He ran a hand through his messy black hair, straightening it, and walked toward my table. Just as I reached my friends and grabbed my bag, he stepped up right behind me. He was so close that I could catch the scent of his masculine, subtly woody cologne. Leaning down, he spoke in a low, reassuring voice meant only for my ears:

"Don't worry, he won't bother you anymore. Are you really okay? If you want, we can get out of this cafeteria and get some fresh air in the courtyard. What do you say?"

His green eyes scanned my face, searching to see if I was hurt or shaken. I knew how stubborn and volatile Lucas could be. If I walked out of the cafeteria with Daniel right now, Lucas would take it as a declaration of war and cause a massive scene in the middle of the school. Trying to suppress the sudden jolt of electricity humming through my veins, I murmured in a timid, anxious voice:

"Oh, no... Lucas won't leave us alone if we do. Besides, I should probably stick with Amanda and the girls. But thank you, Daniel..."

A warm, slightly bittersweet but incredibly tender smile appeared on Daniel's face.

"Alright, whatever you want," he said, his voice softening completely. "But if you need anything, or if Lucas crosses the line... you know where to find me, okay?"

He gently tapped my shoulder to reassure me. The moment his fingertips brushed against me, a wave of warmth surged through my entire body. As Daniel turned around and walked back to his own table, I stood there, watching his retreat. My heart rate had completely shifted, and this time, it wasn't out of fear. It was because of Daniel.
