Blood and rain

Blood and rain

Rain had a way of washing blood into the earth like it had never existed. Seventeen-year-old Kael Voss stood in the middle of the forest, chest rising and falling steadily, while the bodies of the hunters cooled at his feet. Water streamed down his light-olive skin and darkened his black hair. His hazel eyes still glowed faintly — gold bleeding into crimson — as the last traces of both his wolf and vampire sides settled back under his control.

Behind him, his father spoke. “From this night, you are Alpha.” Marcus Voss’s voice carried no warmth, only certainty. His mother, Elara, watched in silence, her expression unreadable. Kael didn’t turn around. He simply stared at the men who had come to kill his family and felt nothing but cold acceptance. He had known this day would come.

Three years later, the same cold still lived in his chest. The black SUV stopped in front of Moonridge Academy. Kael stepped out first. At eighteen he was taller, stronger, and far more dangerous. Students moved aside without being told. Some bared their necks. Others simply dropped their gaze. The hybrid Alpha had arrived. Ronan was at his right shoulder, as always. Jax and Leo followed close behind. They were more than friends — they were his pack in the truest sense. They ran together, fought together, and would die for one another without hesitation.

Serena reached him before anyone else could. She slid her arm through his and pressed her body against his side like she belonged there. Her expensive perfume wrapped around him, sweet and heavy. Kael allowed the contact the same way he allowed rain — without interest. “You’re late, Alpha,” she said, voice low and pleased. “I waited at the house all morning. ”He kept walking. “Move.” Serena’s smile tightened, but she didn’t let go. She never did. That was when the scent hit him. It was faint at first — rain, soap, and something warmer underneath that made both sides of him stir at once.

Kael’s steps slowed. His eyes lifted. She was walking through the front gates with a small group. Long dark wavy hair, warm skin, striking hazel-green eyes, and a face so beautiful it felt almost unfair. But she dressed like she wanted the world to underestimate her: oversized black hoodie, cargo pants, scuffed boots. No jewelry. No effort. Just raw, quiet defiance .Lila Quinn. Their eyes locked. Something invisible and violent slammed into Kael’s chest. His wolf, Riven, surged forward so hard he almost staggered. The vampire side of him followed a split second later, hungry and sharp. For one dangerous moment his control slipped — his eyes flashed pure gold before he forced them back. Across the courtyard, the girl flinched and pressed a hand to her sternum, as if she had felt the exact same hit. Serena’s nails dug into his arm. Kael barely noticed. He was already watching the stranger who had just walked into his territory and woken up both monsters living under his skin.

THE GIRL WHO DIDNT BOW

The classroom felt too small the moment she walked in. Kael sat at the back, one arm draped over his desk, expression unreadable. Ronan was on his right, Jax and Leo a row behind. Serena had already claimed the edge of his desk like it was her personal throne, legs crossed, platinum hair falling over one shoulder. Her two shadows, Brielle and Nate, sat close enough to laugh at whatever cruel thing she decided to say next.Lila Quinn entered late, hoodie sleeves pushed up to her elbows, backpack hanging off one shoulder. She didn’t look around for an empty seat the way most new students did. She just walked like she had somewhere better to be.Serena’s voice cut across the room, sweet and poisonous.“Look what the humans dragged in. Try not to get dirt on the floor, stray.”A few people snickered. Most stayed silent, waiting to see what the hybrid Alpha would do.Lila stopped walking. She turned her head slowly, hazel-green eyes calm, almost bored. When she spoke, her voice wasn’t loud, but every word landed clean. “At least I don’t have to climb onto someone’s desk to feel important. ”The silence that followed was sharp enough to cut skin. Kael felt the corner of his mouth threaten to lift. He crushed the almost-smile before it could form. Still, something dangerous and pleased curled low in his chest. Riven, his wolf, rumbled in approval. The vampire side of him simply watched her with new interest. Serena’s face flushed an ugly red. Her fingers tightened around the edge of the desk. Lila didn’t wait for a reply. She walked to an empty seat near the window and sat down like the conversation was already over. Kael’s eyes stayed on her for the rest of the period.

When the bell rang, he followed her. He didn’t plan it. His body just moved. He caught up to her in the empty corridor outside the east stairwell, stepping into her path so she had no choice but to stop. He didn’t touch her. He didn’t touch her. He didn’t need to. The sheer presence of him was enough to pin her in place.Kael stepped closer until her back almost brushed the wall. He kept one hand in his pocket, the other hanging loose at his side, but every line of his body said control. His hazel eyes moved over her face slowly, like he was trying to solve a problem that refused to make sense.“You should be careful who you challenge, little human,” he said. His voice was quiet, low, and rough around the edges.Lila tilted her chin up. She had to tip her head back to meet his eyes, but she didn’t look away. Up close he was even more overwhelming — the height, the heat coming off his skin, the faint scent of rain, forest, and something darker underneath.“And you should be careful who you underestimate… Alpha.”The words left her mouth before she could stop them.Something flickered in his eyes. Gold. Just for a second. Then it was gone.Kael’s gaze dropped to her mouth. The air between them changed — thicker, heavier, charged. Inside his chest, Riven snarled and pushed hard against his ribs, wanting to get closer. The vampire side of him stayed silent, but it was watching her with the kind of focus that usually came before violence… or hunger. He could have closed the last few inches.Instead, Kael forced himself to step back. The loss of his heat felt sudden. Lila stayed still against the wall, heart slamming against her ribs so hard she was sure he could hear it. He looked at her for one more long second, expression unreadable again, then turned and walked away without another word.Lila let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. She didn’t understand what had just happened. She only knew that whatever lived under Kael Voss’s skin had looked at her — really looked — and something inside her own body had answered. And that terrified her more than anything else.
