*Chapter 1: The Phone Call* I was a nameless boy who fell in love in my youth. I was 18 and she was 17. At that time, she was engaged to my cousin. I loved her more than anything. Back then we only had those old button phones. One day she came to our house with my cousin. In our family, when a girl is promised to someone, we observe purdah. Because without respect, things get ruined. That afternoon my cousin pulled me aside. "Bro," he said, "I want to talk to her on the phone." My heart sank. I loved that girl. But my family was everything to me. How could I say no? With trembling hands I went to her. "The guy you’re engaged to wants to talk to you," I said. It was the hardest sentence of my life. I convinced her somehow. She finally said "okay". Inside, I was crying tears of blood. But I also knew she could never be mine. They sat in the other room and talked for 1 whole hour. Laughing.
