Prologue
I push my bag onto the front step, keys jingling in one hand as I struggle to keep my balance. It is dark and cold, the kind of night that makes me want nothing more than to curl up in bed with a mug of hot chocolate.
But then my phone vibrates in my pocket at this exact moment.
I stop fumbling with the door and pull it out. A message from my sister, Thandiwe. We haven’t spoken in over two years.
Taking a deep breath, I open it.
“Dad is dying and wants to see you.”
That is it.
I wish I had blocked her. I wish I hadn’t opened the message. But it is too late now. I have been avoiding going home. Avoiding the very people who made me believe God has favorites.
Without thinking twice, I type back, “Ok.”
Then, with a rush of anger and something heavier I don’t want to name, I shove the door open and step inside. But everything is better when Imani is the first thing I lay my eyes on.
‘Mama!’ She screams
‘Hey baby.’ I respond opening my arms wide.
