Chapter 1
Chapter 1 — The Man Behind the Desk
The rain had been falling since dawn.
Amelia Carter stood outside the tall glass building, clutching the strap of her handbag as she stared at the company logo above the entrance.
KINGSTON EMPIRE.
Today was supposed to be the beginning of a new life.
She desperately needed this job.
After losing her previous employment, Amelia had spent weeks searching for another opportunity. This interview was her last chance to prove that she could stand on her own feet.
She took a deep breath and walked inside.
“Good morning. I’m here for the personal assistant interview,” she told the receptionist.
The woman checked her list.
“Amelia Carter?”
“Yes.”
“Twenty-third floor. Mr. Kingston is expecting you.”
Amelia's heart skipped.
Mr. Kingston.
Everyone in the city knew that name.
Alexander Kingston was young, wealthy, powerful—and famously cold.
She stepped into the elevator.
When the doors opened on the twenty-third floor, a nervous feeling settled in her stomach.
A secretary pointed toward a large black door.
“Go in.”
Amelia knocked.
“Come in.”
The deep voice sent an unexpected shiver through her.
She opened the door.
A tall man stood beside the enormous window, dressed in a perfectly fitted black suit. His back was toward her.
“Sit.”
Amelia sat.
The man slowly turned around.
Her breath stopped.
Those dark eyes.
That familiar face.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Alexander Kingston's expression hardened.
“You.”
Amelia stared at him in disbelief.
She had not seen him since the night they secretly got married.
A marriage that was supposed to last only six months.
A marriage neither of them was supposed to tell anyone about.
But now, after all this time, she was sitting in his office...
Applying for a job.
Alexander walked toward his desk and picked up her résumé.
His jaw tightened.
“You didn't tell me you were coming here.”
Amelia swallowed.
“I didn't know this was your company.”
He leaned back in his chair.
A dangerous smile appeared on his lips.
“Then congratulations, Mrs. Kingston.”
Her eyes widened.
He lowered his voice.
“Looks like you're going to be working for your husband.”
Amelia's heart pounded.
Because there was only one problem.
Nobody at Kingston Empire knew that Alexander Kingston was already married.
