BLOOD AND STARLIGHT

The air inside the Lumina Caverns tasted like copper and old snow.

Morrigan pressed her back against the jagged obsidian wall, her breaths shallow, even, and completely silent. Outside the narrow stone alcove, the world was screaming. The clash of steel against iron echoed through the massive underground chamber, punctuated by the horrific, guttural roars of beasts that didn't belong in the civilized world.

Lycans.

"Hold the western ridge!" General Gideon’s voice boomed through the cavern, deep and commanding, cutting through the screech of magic and the tearing of flesh. "Do not let the beasts breach the mining line! Safeguard the crystals!"

Morrigan closed her icy-blue eyes for a split second, centering the storm swirling beneath her ribs. They had been set up. The Arch-Prelate Malachai had assured the High Council that the border caverns were unguarded that the sacred Moon-Shed Tears could be harvested under the cover of darkness without alerting the Vargothian packs. It was supposed to be a swift, bloodless extraction to save Oakhaven's dying magical archives.

It was a lie. The moment the Silver Vanguard’s picks had struck the first glowing moon-crystal, the shadows in the cave had come alive.

A deafening crash shattered the stone just inches from her hiding spot. Morrigan whipped her head around, her ink-black hair whipping across her face as a massive, silver-armored Oakhaven soldier was thrown through the air, his chest caved in by a single, brutal blow. Standing over him was a Lycan warrior, his muzzle dripping with fresh crimson, his eyes glowing a predatory, feral yellow.

The beast caught her scent. He turned, a low, vibrating growl rattling around his chest as he bared his fangs and lunged straight for her throat.

"Don't touch me, dog," Morrigan hissed.

She didn't reach for a blade. Instead, she threw her hands forward, unlocking the floodgates of her soul.

Instantly, a blinding, violent flash of violet light erupted from her palms. The sheer force of her Celestial Aether magic tore through the air, defying gravity as it lifted the three-hundred-pound wolf off his feet, suspending him in a vacuum of crushing starlight before blasting him backward into the stone pillars. The pillar cracked, burying the beast under a mountain of rubble.

But the victory cost her.

Morrigan gasped, dropping to one knee as a sharp, agonizing burn rippled through her chest. Beneath the translucent, porcelain skin of her forearms, glowing amethyst veins began to pulse violently, creeping up toward her neck. The blood-alchemy Malachai had bound to her life force was waking up, feeding on her vitality to fuel her power. It felt like liquid fire pouring through her bloodstream. She was strong stronger than almost any mage in Oakhaven but her magic was a beautiful executioner. If she pushed too hard, it would stop her heart.

"Morrigan!" Gideon shouted, his broadsword covered in black wolf blood as he cut his way toward her through the smoke. "You've drawn too much! Your veins are turning! We need to retreat the Vanguard is falling!"

"I can hold them!" she screamed back, stubborn pride flaring through her pain. She forced herself back to her feet, her boots slipping slightly in the pooling blood on the cavern floor. "If we leave the crystals, Oakhaven falls anyway!"

"We leave!" Gideon commanded, his noble face tight with rare panic as he grabbed her shoulder. "The King is here, Morrigan. Drakon has joined the field. If he finds you—"

Before Gideon could finish the sentence, the temperature in the cavern plummeted.

The roaring fires from the Mage lanterns suddenly flickered and died, choked out by an unnatural, suffocating darkness. The screaming soldiers fell silent. The clashing of swords ceased. A heavy, terrifying stillness blanketed the cavern, so thick it felt like gravity itself had doubled.

The shadows on the cave walls weren't stretching from the firelight anymore. They were moving on their own. They poured down the stone pillars like black ink, pooling across the floor, swallowing the light of the glowing crystals until the entire cavern was plunged into a terrifying, midnight gloom.

Then came the footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Deliberate.

From the deepest, darkest tunnel of the cavern, a silhouette stepped out of the blackness. He was massive, his towering, broad-shouldered frame eclipsing the space around him. He wore no armor only dark, heavy furs and leather strapped across a chest carved from stone, marred by ancient battle scars. His unruly dark hair shadowed his face, but his eyes... his eyes were two burning pools of molten gold, glowing with a lethal, absolute dominance that made the remaining Oakhaven soldiers instinctively take a step back.

King Drakon of Vargothia had arrived.

"You dare steal from my lands," Drakon spoke. His voice wasn't a shout. It was a low, resonant baritone that carried the weight of a mountain. But underneath the words wrapped a vibration the primal Soul-Command of the First Alphas. The frequency struck Morrigan’s eardrums, making her knees tremble with a sudden, terrifying urge to drop to the stone floor and bow.

Beside her, two Silver Vanguard soldiers choked, their weapons clattering to the ground as they fell to their knees, paralyzed by the sheer psychological weight of his aura.

Drakon’s golden eyes swept over the carnage, indifferent to the dead wolves, until his gaze locked onto the glowing, violet veins pulsing beneath Morrigan's skin. He paused. His nostrils flared, his chest expanding as he took a deep, sudden breath of the cavern air.

The molten gold in his eyes flared into a blinding, feral fire. The absolute control on his aristocratic face cracked, replaced by a dark, dangerous, and completely unhinged expression. His wolf had just scented her.

Gideon stepped in front of Morrigan, raising his blade. "Protect the Mage! Fall back!"

Drakon didn't slide a sword from his belt. He didn't need to. He raised a single hand, and the shadows pooling on the floor rose up like lethal, sharp tendrils, wrapping around Gideon’s blades and pinning the Vanguard soldiers against the walls.

"Kaelith," Drakon growled, never breaking eye contact with Morrigan.

Out of the darkness behind the King, Captain Kaelith stepped forward, his sharp, shadow-walker eyes scanning the room. "Sire?"

"Take the warlord's men and slaughter the rest of the scum," Drakon commanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, possessive purr that made the hairs on Morrigan's neck stand up. "But leave the witch to me."

Morrigan’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her violet veins burned fiercely, screaming at her to run, but she refused to be a coward. As Drakon began to walk slowly toward her, the shadows parting around his boots like loyal subjects, she gathered every single drop of starlight left in her bleeding soul.

"I told you," she whispered through her teeth, her icy-blue eyes glaring directly into his molten gold. "I don't bow to monsters."

Drakon didn’t flinch at her words. A dark, mocking smile played at the corner of his lips, but the raw, possessive intensity in his molten-gold eyes told a completely different story. He was looking at her the way a starving predator looks at its prey—obsessed, dangerous, and entirely consumed by the scent filling his lungs.

"Let's see how long that pride lasts, little mage," Drakon murmured.

He lunged.

The move was blindingly fast, a blur of shadow and muscle that defied human reaction. But Morrigan had been trained by General Gideon himself. She didn't wait. With a sharp cry of defiance, she slammed her hands downward, unleashing the residual Celestial Aether trapped in her blood.

A pillar of pure, violet starlight erupted from the stone floor directly between them, creating a violent anti-gravity barrier. The force of her magic shattered the surrounding stone into levitating debris, casting a blinding light that illuminated every hidden corner of the dark cavern.

Drakon was forced to halt, his shadows hissing as they collided with the volatile starlight.

"Move! Now!" Gideon roared from across the chamber, desperately fighting against the shadow tendrils pinning his legs. "Morrigan, run!"

Morrigan didn't need to be told twice. She spun on her heel, her boots tearing through the gravel as she sprinted toward the narrow northern tunnel the only exit the Lycans hadn't fully blocked. But every step felt like she was dragging lead. The violet veins pulsing beneath her skin flared with an agonizing, blinding heat. The blood-alchemy inside her was punishing her for pushing past her limits. Her vision blurred, dark spots dancing at the edges of her eyes, and her breath hitched in a throat that felt like it was coated in ash.

Just a little further, she told herself, gripping her chest as she neared the dark mouth of the tunnel.

Suddenly, the shadows inside the tunnel twisted.

Before she could even gasp, the darkness materialized into a solid, towering wall of muscle and fur. Drakon stepped out of the blackness directly in front of her, having stepped through the shadows to cut off her escape.

Morrigan stumbled backward, her icy-blue eyes widening in sheer shock. She tried to raise her hands to blast him again, but the magic collapsed inside her. The gray, cold exhaustion of an overload hit her like a physical blow. The amethyst light beneath her skin died out, leaving her weak, shivering, and completely defenseless. Her knees buckled.

She expected to hit the hard, cold stone floor.

Instead, a massive, heavily calloused hand shot out of the darkness, locking firmly around her waist.

The exact millisecond Drakon’s bare skin brushed against her clothes and touched the exposed skin of her waist, a violent, invisible shockwave ripped through both of their bodies.

Morrigan gasped, her breath completely taken from her lungs. It wasn't an explosion of magic it was something far more terrifying. A sudden, suffocating wave of pure, primal chemical addiction slammed into her bloodstream. Her heart hammered against her ribs, not from fear, but from a sudden, maddening urge to press herself closer to the monster holding her. The scent of him wild pine, winter rain, and raw alpha dominance filled her senses, making her head spin with an intoxicating whiplash.

Drakon froze.

The Lycan King went entirely rigid, his massive chest heaving against her face. The molten gold in his eyes completely eclipsed his pupils, turning them into solid rings of glowing fire. His inner wolf didn't just wake up; it went completely feral. Morrigan could feel the precise moment his fingers tightened around her waist, his grip so fierce it bruised her skin, anchoring her against his hard, stone-carved frame as if he were terrified she would vanish if he let go.

"What..." Drakon’s voice fractured, losing its regal composure. He breathed in sharply, his nose dragging across the side of her neck, inhaling her starlight scent with a desperate, frantic hunger that looked like sheer madness. "What did you do to me, witch?"

"Get... off me," Morrigan choked out, trying to raise her fists to strike his chest. But her hands were trembling so violently she could barely form a fist. She hated him. She hated the way her body was reacting to his touch. She hated the terrifying, forbidden fated bond that was sinking into her veins like a toxic drug.

"Sire!" Captain Kaelith’s voice cut through the haze from the main cavern. "The remaining Vanguard soldiers are retreating into the woods! Shall we pursue?"

Drakon didn't look back. He didn't care about the escaping military. He didn't care about the war. He didn't even care about the sacred moon-crystals glittering on the floor. His entire universe had just shrunk down to the fierce, stubborn mage shivering in his arms.

He reached into the leather pouch at his belt, pulling out a pair of heavy iron cuffs carved with ancient, anti-magic runes. He slammed them around her wrists, the heavy metal locking with a definitive, chilling click.

"No pursuit," Drakon growled into the darkness, his voice dipping into a low, terrifyingly possessive purr that made Morrigan's blood run hot. He swept her off her feet, lifting her lean frame against his chest as if she weighed nothing at all. He pinned her arms securely against his torso, his molten-gold eyes staring down into her defiant, icy-blue ones with a dark, unhinged obsession.

"Secure the perimeter," Drakon commanded his captain, his fingers digging into her thighs to keep her locked against him. "We are returning to the Obsidian Citadel immediately. This one belongs to the King."

Morrigan glared up at him, her lips pulling back in a snarl despite the gray darkness threatening to pull her under. "I will tear your throat out the second I get my magic back, Lycan."

Drakon let out a low, rough laugh that vibrated directly against her chest, his head dipping low until his lips brushed the shell of her ear.

"I'd like to see you try, little mage," he whispered, his hot breath fanning over her neck, sending a dangerous shiver down her spine. "But until then, you breathe when I tell you to breathe."

As the darkness finally swallowed her consciousness whole, the last thing Morrigan felt was the tight, suffocating warmth of his arms wrapping around her, claiming her, and pulling her into a world she was never meant to survive
