Chapter 1: The One Without Roots
Yuan Chen sat in darkness, a cracked yellowed skull resting in his hand.
Around him stood the ruins of a forgotten temple.
Seven years ago, he had stood in the Temple of First Dawn beside the other children of his village.
An elder had placed a hand against his chest.
The examination had lasted only a few breaths.
Then the elder's expression changed.
"No Pathways."
A pause.
"Dead vessel."
Two sentences.
That was all it took to end his future.
No family wanted someone who could not cultivate.
No employer wanted someone who could not fight.
Even the gangs that prowled the streets had no use for a person who could contribute nothing.
Yuan was cast out the following day.
His father never looked at him.
His mother cried.
She did not stop them.
The village reached its conclusion without needing to say it aloud.
Yuan Chen no longer belonged among them.
But he did not die.
He searched for another answer.
If spiritual energy was the only way to cultivate, then why?
Why couldn't something else serve as a foundation?
His search eventually brought him beneath a mountain to an abandoned temple everyone else avoided.
The reason became clear when he discovered what lay beneath the earth.
A battlefield.
Thousands had died there long ago.
Their bodies had been buried beneath the mountain, forgotten by the world above.
Yuan had come looking for answers.
Instead, he found something moving beneath his fingers as he dug through the soil.
Not spiritual energy.
Something colder.
Something that felt almost alive.
Remnants.
Fragments of will that had refused to disappear with their owners.
Hatred.
Desire.
Instinct.
Unfinished thoughts left behind by the dead.
Yuan stared at the strange fragments for a long moment.
Then he reached for one.
And swallowed it.
Pain exploded through his body.
He collapsed.
Voices flooded his mind—thousands of them, screaming, pleading, cursing.
Each carried a different hatred.
A different desire.
A different death.
This was nothing like the pure spiritual energy described in the sacred texts.
It was chaos.
Raw will without a vessel.
Yuan's body trembled violently.
Every instinct told him to let go.
Instead, he held on.
He had spent years being told that there was only one path.
Perhaps the people who told him that had simply never found another.
The pain continued.
Then Yuan noticed something.
The remnants were not pure chaos.
Each had a direction.
A desire.
A will.
And if will could be given direction—
Perhaps chaos could be controlled.
He clenched his teeth.
He forced the remnants into submission.
Not through harmony.
Not through purity.
Through sheer refusal to yield.
Hours passed.
When Yuan finally opened his eyes, blood stained his face.
His body was barely capable of moving.
But something inside him had changed.
He had not opened a Pathway.
He had opened something else.
A dark passage where no Pathway should have existed.
A path no sacred text had ever described.
Because no one had survived long enough to record it.
Yuan sat among the graves.
Then he laughed.
It was dry.
Joyless.
But genuine.
"So..."
He looked at the graves surrounding him.
"This is the path you left me."
Seven years later, Yuan turned the cracked skull slowly in his hand.
"The world believes there is only one way to ascend."
His fingers tightened.
"But the world was never meant to be fully understood."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"It was meant to be exploited."
He did not seek justice.
He did not care about the villagers who had cast him out.
The elder who had condemned him.
His father, who had refused to look at him.
They were too small.
Too insignificant to deserve revenge.
What Yuan wanted was something greater.
One day, he would stand at the peak of this world—a world built upon laws that claimed they could never be broken.
And he would prove that every law had a weakness.
Every system had a flaw.
Every rule had a fracture.
All he needed was to find it.
He had not become cold because the world had mistreated him.
The coldness had always been there.
Even as a child, Yuan had viewed people differently.
Others saw relationships.
He saw transactions.
Others saw enemies and friends.
He saw useful pieces and obstacles.
The world itself had become a board.
And sacrifice meant little when someone else was the one being sacrificed.
His corruption would not be born from revenge.
It would be built by choice.
He needed no grand justification.
Only opportunity.
Yuan looked toward the horizon.
Far in the distance, the lights of a great city shimmered beneath the night sky.
Xian Yu.
A city filled with cultivation families, powerful masters, temples, and laws that had remained unchallenged for generations.
Yuan smiled.
Quietly.
Then he rose, carrying the first remnant he had ever claimed as part of himself.
"Let's begin."
"A different kind of cultivation."
