Chapter 1: The Solstice Betrayal
The icy wind rattled the loose iron latches of the attic window, forcing a fine spray of powdery snow across the bare floorboards. Maya stood shivering in front of a cracked piece of looking glass, her rough, cold fingers fumbling with the delicate silver embroidery along the cuffs of her dress.
It was her mother’s gown—a sweeping thing of pale white silk, carefully hidden beneath the floorboards for seven long years.
Since her mother’s death, this damp room beneath the rafters had been Maya's sanctuary and her prison. She was the Beta’s eldest daughter, yet she lived like a shadow in her own home. Her days were consumed by relentless labor: scrubbing black grease from heavy iron kettles, hauling coal up three flights of stairs, and enduring the harsh, stinging slaps of her stepmother, Brenda. Her hands were rough and calloused, her knees permanently bruised, and her body thin from years of meager rations.
Yet tonight, none of that exhaustion mattered. Tonight was the Solstice Gala—the night when future Alphas claimed their mates before the pack elders and visiting delegates.
Six days ago, Asher had trapped her in the dark alley behind the weapons hall. He had taken her rough, soap-scented hands in his, looking into her dark eyes with an intensity that made her chest tighten.
“Wait for the solstice, Maya,” he had whispered, his thumb gently wiping a fleck of soot from her cheek. “I know how Brenda treats you. I know what they say behind your back. Just hold on until the moon hits the peak. Everything is going to change.”
Those words had kept her alive through a week of brutal chores.
The heavy attic door swung open with a bang, hitting the pine frame. Brenda stepped into the small room, her dark velvet skirts rustling over the dusty floor. In her manicured hand, she carried a heavy clay mug filled with a thick, steaming liquid—the shadow-root tea she forced Maya to drink twice a day under the pretense of "curing her frail chest."
"Still admiring yourself, you useless stain?" Brenda sneered, her sharp green eyes sweeping over the silk gown with instant venom. She slammed the mug down on the washstand, spilling a dark ring of fluid onto the wood. "Drink your tea and get down to the kitchens. The hearth fires need more oak before the guests arrive."
Maya looked at the dark, murky tea. It smelled of sour earth and crushed bitter roots, leaving a greasy film on her tongue every time she drank it. "I'm dressed for the hall, Brenda. Asher told me—"
"Alpha Asher is a future pack ruler who has no time for kitchen dogs!" Brenda barked, her hand snapping out to grab Maya’s jaw with sharp nails. "Drink it. All of it. If you faint on the floorboards tonight, I’ll have Thomas lock you in the cellar."
Maya swallowed the bitter tea in three heavy gulps, the hot fluid burning a path down her throat. Almost instantly, a familiar, heavy numbness settled into her chest—a thick, suffocating weight that kept her core dull and lifeless beneath her ribs.
Twenty minutes later, Maya stood in the shadows near the back entrance of the grand hall.
The room was a dizzying display of wealth and power. Hundreds of beeswax candles burned in crystal chandeliers high above, casting a warm golden glow over polished flagstones, white silk banners, and long tables laden with roasted venison and sweet wine. Visiting delegates from neighboring border packs filled the room, their heavy leather coats trimmed with thick mountain furs.
At the front of the hall, standing on a raised oak dais beside the sacred stone altar, stood Asher.
He looked striking in his dark green Alpha dress coat, his broad shoulders cutting a powerful line against the white flowers draped along the walls. Beside him stood Beta Thomas—Maya's father—holding the ceremonial silver staff. Not once did Thomas glance toward the back of the room where his eldest daughter stood in the dark corridor.
"Look at her," a quiet whisper echoed from two female warriors standing near the archway. "She actually wore her dead mother's dress. Does she really think Alpha Asher would look twice at a wolf-less girl?"
"She doesn't even have an aura," the second warrior scoffed softly. "If she weren't Beta Thomas's blood, she'd have been thrown into the rogue camps years ago."
Maya squeezed her fists tight inside her long sleeves, her heart hammering against the numb weight in her chest. Just wait for the solstice, she reminded herself, holding onto Asher's promise like a lifeline. He's going to tell them.
An iron bell chimed three times from the high rafters. The chatter in the hall died down instantly. The pack elders took their places around the altar, their faces solemn as the high priest raised a golden bowl of sacred oil.
Asher stepped to the edge of the dais. His amber eyes swept over the crowded room, passing right over the noble ladies in the front row, until they locked straight onto Maya standing in the dark rear corridor.
He raised a hand, pointing a single finger directly at her.
"Maya," Asher’s voice boomed across the quiet hall, rich with Alpha authority. "Step forward."
A collective murmur rippled through the two hundred guests. People parted like water, turning their heads to stare as Maya walked down the central aisle. Her heart thundered in her ears. The silk skirts of her mother's gown rustled against her worn boots as she stepped onto the wooden dais, stopping three paces from Asher.
She looked up into his handsome face, her dark eyes shining with quiet hope. "Asher..."
Asher didn't smile. The warm, tender look he had given her in the weapons hall six days ago was completely gone, replaced by a cold, arrogant mask.
"Elders of Silverfang, visiting Alphas," Asher announced, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the vast room. "Tonight, as I take my place as your rightful ruler, I must clear away the old debts of the past."
He looked down at Maya, his lip curling into a sneer of pure disgust.
"Seven years ago, my father pledged a childhood betrothal between myself and the eldest daughter of Beta Thomas," Asher said, gesturing to Maya. "But a pack cannot be led by a broken line. Maya is a wolf-less stain. She carries no aura, no strength, and no value to the future of Silverfang."
The floor seemed to tilt beneath Maya’s feet. The faces of the crowd blurred into a terrifying nightmare. "Asher... what are you saying?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Six days ago, you said—"
"I said what I needed to say to keep you quiet until the gala!" Asher cut her off, his voice dropping into a harsh, cruel snap. "Did you really think an Alpha would choose a kitchen maid over a true mate?"
He turned to the side of the dais. "Step forward, my Luna."
Sienna stepped out from behind the velvet curtain. She was dressed in a sweeping gown of white lace, her blonde hair arranged in intricate braids, a cruel, triumphant smile gleaming on her face. Beside her, Brenda watched with her chin held high, her eyes glittering with cold victory.
"I, Alpha Asher of the Silverfang Pack, officially reject you, Maya of the White-River line, as my mate and my female!" Asher roared, his voice hitting her chest like an iron hammer.
CRACK!
A violent, agonizing heat seared across Maya’s collarbone. The rejection mark—a jagged black burn—etched itself into her skin, severing the natural bond before it could even fully bloom. Maya let out a choked scream, falling to her knees on the hard oak floorboards, her hands clutching her burning neck.
"And as Alpha," Asher continued, stepping over her bowed form without a second thought, "I reclaim what belongs to the Beta's house. That silk gown belonged to a true noble, not a discarded servant."
Before Maya could react, Asher grabbed the shoulder of her mother's silk dress and ripped it downward. The delicate fabric tore with a sickening screech. Two guards stepped forward, pinning Maya’s arms behind her back as Sienna stepped up, greedily pulling the silver-embroidered silk from Maya's bare shoulders.
"Throw her out," Asher ordered, turning his back on her as he took Sienna’s hand. "She is banished from Silverfang territory. If she steps foot on pack land after midnight, she will be executed as a rogue."
They dragged her through the gravel courtyard in her thin cotton undergarments, her bare skin exposed to the biting mountain wind. Beta Thomas watched from the top of the stone stairs, his silver staff resting in his hand, his eyes fixed on the horizon as if his eldest daughter were nothing more than a ghost.
The heavy iron boundary gates slammed shut behind her with a deafening screech.
"And stay in the woods, kitchen dog!" a guard laughed, throwing her worn leather boots into the slush beside her.
The blizzard howled through the towering pines of the Deadwood. Freezing snow cut into Maya’s bare arms and legs as she stumbled forward into the pitch-black forest. Each step felt like walking on broken glass. Her skin turned blue, her lungs burning with the icy air she forced into her chest.
She fell. Her knees hit a drift of deep snow near an ancient oak tree, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.
I'm dying, she thought, her vision swimming as dark spots danced across her eyes. I'm going to freeze to death in the woods...
As her body temperature dropped into the dead zone, something strange happened.
The severe trauma of the rejection—combined with the deadly cold—sent a violent shockwave through her system. Deep within her gut, the thick, oily shadow-root poison that Brenda had fed her for seven years began to freeze, crack, and shatter.
CRACK.
An electric, white-hot heat exploded in the absolute center of her chest.
Maya gasped, her back arching off the snow as a blinding silver light erupted beneath her ribs. The heavy weight in her blood shattered into a million sparkling shards. Her dark eyes snapped open, glowing with a brilliant, lethal ring of liquid silver that lit up the dark forest around her.
Down in her lower stomach, where the cold had tried to claim her life, a soft, double thrum echoed through her veins—two distinct, incredibly strong heartbeats vibrating together like silver bells.
Heartbeats? Maya thought, her hands instinctively wrapping around her belly beneath her wet shift. Two... two tiny lives?
Before she could process the shock, the snow-covered pine branches thirty paces ahead snapped with a thunderous crack.
Out of the dark blizzard stepped a colossal shape—a massive, broad-shouldered man clad in black leather and fur, carrying a broadsword that gleamed under the moonlight. His silver eyes locked onto Maya’s glowing face with an intensity that made the storm itself seem to fall quiet.
King Kaelen took a slow, heavy step toward her, his breath rising in thick white plumes, his eyes widening in pure shock as he caught the undeniable scent of his true mate bleeding into the winter wind.
