Chapter one Madison Huge

The desert didn’t make many people look soft, but Madison Huge carried a softness that didn’t break — it bent, it survived, it learned. She walked through Yuma like she’d already lived three lifetimes and wasn’t done yet.Craig first saw her outside the old corner store on 4th Avenue. The neon sign buzzed overhead, throwing a pale blue glow across her face. She wasn’t dressed to stand out, but she did anyway — not because of clothes, but because of presence. Madison had that quiet kind of gravity that pulled your attention without asking permission. She held a paper bag of groceries against her hip, but her eyes were somewhere else — far away, like she was replaying a memory she wished she could erase. When she noticed Craig watching, she didn’t flinch.

She didn’t shy away.

She just met his gaze with a look that said she’d already figured him out.“You’re the guy who walks with the Lions flag,” she said. Her voice was steady, but there was a tremble underneath — not fear, more like exhaustion from carrying too much alone.Craig nodded.Madison stepped closer, the streetlight stretching her shadow long behind her.“I need to tell you something,” she said.

And the way she said it made the whole night feel heavier. Not dangerous.

Not dramatic.

Just important.Craig didn’t know it yet, but Madison Huge was about to change everything — the road, the story, the purpose. Chapter One wasn’t about him. It wasn’t about the desert. It wasn’t about the ghosts. It was about her.
