Chapter 46the Manor Gates
CHAPTER 46 — THE GATES OF BREEDLOVE MANOR
The road curved gently through the trees.
Ahead, the first stone pillars of Breedlove Manor came into view.
Beyond them stood the great iron gates.
For those returning home, the sight was familiar.
For those who had traveled far into the Ravenshade Mountains, it was a welcome sight indeed.
The carriage slowed as it approached.
Two guards stood at the entrance, positioned on either side of the gatehouse.
Both straightened when they recognized the approaching carriage.
One of them stepped forward.
“Welcome home.”
The words were simple.
Yet after being away, they carried more meaning than expected.
The carriage came to a complete stop.
The guard looked toward the travelers.
“Your journey went safely?”
“We made it through,” came the reply.
The second guard glanced toward the mountain road behind them.
“Then the mountains have returned you to us.”
A quiet laugh came from one of the travelers.
“They tried not to.”
The first guard smiled.
“They usually do.”
The two guards exchanged a knowing look.
Everyone who lived around Breedlove Manor understood that the Ravenshade Mountains demanded respect.
The first guard stepped toward the gatehouse.
He lifted the heavy latch.
With a deep metallic groan, the great iron gates began to open.
Slowly.
Steadily.
The carriage moved forward.
As it passed between the stone pillars, the familiar grounds of Breedlove Manor appeared beyond the trees.
The long drive stretched toward the Manor itself.
The gardens had changed slightly during their absence.
Some flowers had faded.
Others were beginning to bloom.
The trees along the drive moved gently in the evening breeze.
And there, rising beyond the grounds, stood Breedlove Manor.
Its stone walls caught the last traces of daylight.
Its tall windows reflected the evening sky.
Its towers stood against the horizon as they had for generations.
Home.
The carriage continued toward the entrance.
The guards watched until it had safely passed.
Then the first guard closed the gates behind them.
The heavy iron doors met with a deep sound that carried across the grounds.
The second guard looked toward his companion.
“Quiet again.”
“For about five minutes.”
The other guard laughed.
“That long?”
They returned to their positions.
Inside the Manor grounds, the returning family began preparing to disembark.
Staff members had already noticed their arrival.
Doors opened.
Footsteps could be heard within the Manor.
Voices carried through the entrance hall.
The quiet building was no longer quiet.
Traveling bags were lifted from the carriage.
Coats were gathered.
Greetings were exchanged.
Questions about the journey began almost immediately.
“How were the roads?”
“Did you encounter much snow?”
“Were the mountain paths difficult?”
The travelers answered as they moved toward the entrance.
Nothing about the return felt extraordinary.
It was simply a family coming home.
Yet Breedlove Manor had a way of making ordinary moments feel important.
Every arrival became part of its history.
Every departure left an echo behind.
And every person who crossed its threshold brought something new with them.
Tonight, the Breedloves had returned from the mountains.
They brought memories.
They brought stories.
They brought questions.
And perhaps without realizing it, they had also brought the next chapter of their lives home with them.
The great doors of Breedlove Manor opened.
The family stepped inside.
Warmth surrounded them.
Familiar walls.
Familiar voices.
Familiar rooms.
For the first time in days, they were home.
Outside, the guards remained at their posts.
The gates were closed.
The evening settled over Nevermore Valley.
And beyond the valley, at the old Vesper property, Elara Vesper Breedlove prepared for tomorrow.
But tonight, Breedlove Manor belonged to the family once again.
