Book 1:Chapter 1
THE NIGHT EVERYONE FORGOT
At exactly 2:17 a.m., Daniel Vale disappeared.
Not physically.
He was still standing in the middle of his bedroom.
Still breathing.
Still alive.
But somewhere between one second and the next, the world forgot that he existed.
Daniel didn’t know this yet.
All he knew was that something had woken him.
His eyes opened slowly.
Darkness.
For a moment, he didn’t move.
The room was unusually quiet. No sound from the street outside. No distant cars. No barking dogs.
Nothing.
He reached for his phone on the bedside table.
The screen lit up his face.
2:17 A.M.
Daniel frowned.
He had gone to bed around eleven.
Three hours had passed, yet he felt as if he had only closed his eyes for a few minutes.
Then he noticed something strange.
His bedroom door was open.
Daniel always slept with it closed.
He sat up.
“Mom?”
No answer.
He waited.
Nothing.
He reached for his slippers and stepped onto the cold floor.
The hallway was dark.
He walked toward the door.
Then he heard it.
A sound from downstairs.
Knock.
Daniel stopped.
Another knock.
Knock. Knock.
Someone was at the front door.
At 2:17 in the morning.
He quietly moved down the stairs.
“Who is there?”
No response.
He reached the living room and looked through the window.
Nobody.
The street outside was empty.
Daniel unlocked the door and opened it slightly.
Cold air rushed into the house.
There was no one outside.
But something was lying on the doorstep.
A small black envelope.
Daniel picked it up.
There was no address.
No stamp.
No name.
Just a single sentence written across the front.
DON’T OPEN THIS UNTIL YOU REMEMBER.
Daniel stared at it.
“Remember what?”
He turned the envelope over.
It was sealed with black wax.
A symbol had been pressed into the wax.
A circle.
And inside the circle was a small, unusual mark that looked almost like an eye.
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
He had seen that symbol before.
He just couldn’t remember where.
Then his phone rang.
He almost dropped the envelope.
MOM
He answered immediately.
“Mom?”
Silence.
“Mom, what’s wrong?”
Her voice finally came through.
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
There was a pause.
“Who is this?”
Daniel smiled nervously.
“Mom, it’s me.”
Another pause.
Then his mother whispered:
“I don’t have a son named Daniel.”
The call ended.
Daniel stood frozen.
For several seconds, he couldn’t process what he had heard.
Then he laughed.
A nervous, confused laugh.
“Okay… very funny.”
He called her back.
The number didn’t connect.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
His mother had gone to bed only a few hours earlier.
He ran upstairs.
“Mom!”
He opened her bedroom door.
Empty.
The bed was perfectly made.
Her clothes were gone.
Her photographs were gone.
Even the framed picture of Daniel and his mother that had sat beside her bed for years was missing.
Daniel walked toward the empty table.
His breathing became heavier.
“No.”
He rushed into his own bedroom.
He grabbed the family photograph from his desk.
His father stood on the left.
His mother stood on the right.
And between them—
nothing.
Daniel stared.
There was a gap where he had been.
His father and mother were smiling at an empty space.
Daniel’s hands began shaking.
He grabbed another photograph.
Then another.
Then another.
Every single one was the same.
He had been removed.
Not cut out.
Not erased roughly.
It was as if he had never been there.
Daniel backed away.
His phone vibrated.
A message.
UNKNOWN NUMBER
You have been erased.
Another message arrived.
Do not trust anyone who remembers you.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then came the third message.
Especially her.
He didn’t understand.
“Who?”
The phone vibrated again.
A photograph appeared.
Daniel opened it.
It showed a girl standing beside a lake.
He recognized her immediately.
Maya.
His best friend.
The person he had known since childhood.
The person who knew everything about him.
Another message appeared beneath the photograph.
She is already looking for you.
Daniel’s heart began pounding.
Then, from downstairs, he heard the front door slowly open.
Someone had entered the house.
Daniel switched off his light.
He stood completely still.
Footsteps moved across the living room.
Slow.
Calm.
Deliberate.
Someone was coming upstairs.
Daniel looked at the black envelope still clutched in his hand.
The footsteps stopped outside his bedroom.
Silence.
Then a man’s voice came from the other side of the door.
“Daniel Vale.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
The door handle slowly turned.
And the man whispered:
“You were never supposed to wake up.”
