Chapter 1 The Edge of Goodbye
The rain had been falling for hours.
By midnight, Blackpine Forest had become almost impossible to see through. Thick clouds covered the mountains, and the narrow trails had turned into streams of mud beneath the storm.
And through that darkness, a girl was running.
Running as if her life depended on it.
“Please…”
Elena could barely breathe.
Her lungs burned with every breath she took, but she didn't stop.
Her wedding dress was supposed to have been the most beautiful thing she had ever worn.
Now it was ruined.
The expensive white fabric was covered in mud, torn at the edges by branches and thorns. Her veil had disappeared somewhere behind her, and strands of wet hair clung to her face.
She was barefoot.
Every step hurt, but she kept running.
Her feet had been cut by stones and sharp branches along the forest floor, leaving faint traces behind her. Her hands were scraped too, and one fresh cut stung whenever rainwater touched it.
But none of that mattered.
She had to get away.
Behind her, voices echoed through the trees.
“Search everywhere!”
“She can't have gone far.”
“Find her before the boss finds out!”
Elena froze for half a second.
Her heart hammered against her chest.
They were getting closer.
She looked over her shoulder.
Through the rain and darkness, she could see several men moving between the trees. Their dark clothes were almost invisible against the forest.
Then she heard another voice.
“She's here!”
Elena's eyes widened.
She ran.
Faster than she thought she could.
Branches scratched against her arms. Her dress caught on thorns, but she tore herself free without looking back.
She didn't care about the pain.
She didn't care about the blood.
She only wanted to get away from him.
But Blackpine Forest had an end.
And Elena had reached it.
She stumbled out of the trees—
—and stopped.
There was nowhere left to run.
In front of her was the edge of Ravenvale.
A vast, terrifying drop disappeared into the darkness below. The valley was so deep that Elena couldn't see the bottom through the rain and fog.
She slowly turned around.
The men had reached the edge of the forest.
They stood several metres away, watching her.
Then they moved apart.
Someone stepped through them.
Elena's breath caught.
Adrian.
He walked toward her slowly.
Tall. Calm. Impossibly composed despite the storm.
His black shirt was damp from the rain, his dark hair falling slightly over his forehead. His face was sharp and striking, the kind of face that could have belonged on a magazine cover—but there was nothing beautiful about the coldness in his eyes tonight.
Elena stared at him.
The man she had loved.
The man she still loved.
The man who had just destroyed everything she believed about them.
Tears mixed with the rain on her face.
“Why?” she whispered.
Adrian stopped.
Elena's voice trembled.
“What did I ever do to you?”
He said nothing.
“I loved you.”
Her voice broke.
“I still love you, Adrian.”
One of the men behind him shifted uncomfortably, but Adrian's expression didn't change.
“I don't understand why you did this to me.”
“Elena—”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don't get to say my name like everything is normal.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
Elena took a shaky breath.
“I loved you. I trusted you. I believed every word you ever said to me.”
She laughed softly through her tears, but there was no happiness in it.
“And I still don't understand how you could do this.”
Adrian finally spoke.
“Enough.”
Elena stared at him.
“Enough?”
“Stop talking.”
“Why?” she asked. “Because you don't want to hear what you did?”
His voice became colder.
“Who told you that you could run from me?”
Elena stepped backward.
“I am not running from you anymore.”
“Then come with me.”
“No.”
Her answer was quiet.
But firm.
Adrian's eyes darkened.
“Elena. Come here.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“You're coming back with me.”
“I won't.”
“You will.”
He took a step toward her.
“You'll come back, and you'll marry me.”
Elena stared at him as though she couldn't believe what she had just heard.
Then she smiled.
A small, broken smile.
“Marry you?”
“Yes.”
“After everything?”
Adrian didn't answer.
Elena's tears continued to fall.
“Before I leave… I just want to know one thing.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“Why?”
Adrian remained silent.
“Were those moments real?”
Her voice became softer.
“The things you used to say to me… the way you looked at me… the promises you made…”
She swallowed.
“Was any of it real?”
Adrian's expression remained unreadable.
“You'll find out later.”
“Later?”
Elena let out a trembling breath.
“You always say that.”
She stepped backward again.
“Just tell me now.”
“Elena, stop.”
“Did you ever love me?”
His silence hurt more than any answer could have.
Elena looked down for a moment.
Then she whispered,
“I understand.”
Adrian's eyes shifted toward the edge behind her.
“Stop moving.”
She didn't.
“Elena.”
Another step.
“Come back.”
She smiled through her tears.
“I wish I could.”
Her voice was barely audible.
“But I can't.”
Adrian's composure finally cracked.
“Stop!”
Elena looked at him.
For one final moment, there was something in her eyes that made even the men behind Adrian fall silent.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Just heartbreak.
“You know what hurts the most?”
Adrian stared at her.
“Even after everything you've done…”
She pressed a trembling hand against her chest.
“I still can't hate you.”
“Elena, come here. Now.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
She took another step backward.
Adrian moved toward her.
“Don't.”
“Elena—”
“Please.”
Her voice broke.
“Just let me go.”
“I'm not letting you go.”
She smiled again.
A painfully gentle smile.
Then she whispered,
“I love you.”
Adrian froze.
“I love you more than I should.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Even after everything… I don't think I'll ever be able to hate you.”
She took one final step backward.
Adrian's eyes widened.
“Elena…”
“I don't know how to stop loving you.”
Her foot slipped.
For a second, everything became still.
Then Elena disappeared over the edge.
“ELENA!”
Adrian's scream tore through the valley.
He ran forward without thinking.
The men behind him rushed after him.
“Sir!”
“Stop him!”
Two of them grabbed for Adrian's arm, trying to pull him back.
But he tore himself free.
“ELENA!”
And before anyone could stop him—
Adrian jumped.
The rain swallowed his figure.
The men stood frozen at the edge of the cliff.
For the first time that night, Adrian had stopped thinking about everything else.
The wedding.
The anger.
The betrayal.
The unanswered questions.
There was only one thought left in his mind.
Elena.
And somewhere beneath the storm, the secrets that had brought them to that cliff were still waiting to be uncovered.
