Light of the City

The screech of metal grinding against steel filled the air like a scream. A subway train, careening far beyond its speed limit, barreled through the underground tunnels beneath New York City. Inside, hundreds of passengers clung to rails and seats, faces pale with panic.

Above ground, the morning sun poured through the glass ceiling of the station’s entrance, casting long shafts of light over the bustling crowd waiting for their rides.

But underground, time had slowed.

A distant hum broke through the chaos, growing louder—a light flaring suddenly in the shadows, like a star fallen to Earth. A figure streaked through the tunnels, a blur of blue and gold. Halo was on the move.

Ethan Reyes felt the familiar surge as the lightfield armor snapped into place around him, the nanotech humming softly against his skin. The suit’s glow pushed back the gloom, illuminating the tunnel ahead with a calm radiance.

He didn’t smile. Couldn’t. Not today.

“Hold on,” his AI companion AURA whispered in his ear, her voice smooth but urgent. “Train speed at ninety miles per hour. Impact in twelve seconds.”

Twelve seconds.

Ethan sprinted alongside the train, hands shooting out to press against the cars as they roared by. The metal flexed and screamed under the pressure.

With a grunt, he vaulted up, grabbing the front car’s railing. Sparks flew. The screeching was deafening.

“This is gonna hurt,” Ethan muttered, teeth clenched.

He planted his feet against the front car, absorbing the force like a human shock absorber. His enhanced muscles burned, but the suit’s lightfield shield flared, cracking apart the worst of the impact.

The train shuddered to a stop inches from the tunnel’s dead end. Passengers gasped, eyes wide. A few started clapping.

Ethan didn’t turn. He slid down, deactivated the armor with a soft pop, and massaged his aching hands.

Just a hero, he thought bitterly. Or just another weapon?

Later, in his cramped apartment — the kind of place with peeling wallpaper and a window that rattled in the wind — Ethan slumped onto his bed. The city’s roar drifted in through the cracked window.

A knock sounded. Sadie.

“Suit acting up again?” she asked, already fiddling with her backpack of tools.

Ethan managed a tired smile. “Just keeping New York safe. No big deal.”

Sadie rolled her eyes but grinned. “Yeah, you keep saying that, and one day you’re gonna actually have to mean it.”

She pulled out a tablet, flashing diagnostics. “Nano field’s unstable. You’re pushing it too hard.”

Ethan’s smile faded. “I don’t have a choice. Not really.”

Sadie looked at him, seeing the weight behind the words. “One day, you gotta stop thinking you’re invincible.”

Ethan didn’t answer. He stared at the ceiling, wondering if anyone ever truly was.

Outside, the city kept turning. And Halo kept watching.

Ku_Rolet: The novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the leads and their bond, but I have one question that confused me. How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...
