Chapter 17:THE LIFE I CHOOSE
Beginning again taught me something I had never fully understood before: sometimes the hardest part is not leaving the past behind. It is believing that you are allowed to want something better.
For a long time, I measured my life by the things I had not achieved.
The job I did not have.
The opportunities I had missed.
The relationships that had disappointed me.
The dreams that seemed to take longer than they should.
I looked at other people and wondered why their lives appeared to be moving forward while I felt as though I was standing in the same place.
But slowly, I began to understand that life is not a race.
Everyone has a different journey.
Some people find their direction early. Others have to lose themselves first before they discover who they really are.
Perhaps I was not behind.
Perhaps I was becoming.
There is a difference between surviving and living.
For years, I had become very good at surviving. I knew how to wake up when I didn't feel like getting out of bed. I knew how to smile when my heart was heavy. I knew how to keep going even when I had no idea where the road was taking me.
But now I wanted more than survival.
I wanted a life that felt like mine.
I wanted to wake up and know that I was building something.
Something meaningful.
Something that belonged to me.
I wanted independence—not because I wanted to prove anything to anyone, but because I wanted to know that I could stand on my own feet.
I wanted peace.
I wanted purpose.
I wanted to look at my life one day and know that I had not allowed my past to decide my future.
Maybe choosing yourself does not happen in one dramatic moment.
Maybe it happens quietly.
In the decision to apply for one more opportunity.
In the decision to walk away from what keeps hurting you.
In the decision to stop begging people to see your worth.
In the decision to take your dreams seriously.
In the decision to say, I deserve better.
I am beginning to make those decisions now.
I don't know exactly where they will lead me.
And for once, I am learning to be comfortable with not knowing.
Because uncertainty is not always a warning.
Sometimes it is an invitation.
An invitation to discover what is waiting beyond everything I already know.
I still have fears.
I still have moments when doubt whispers that maybe I am asking for too much.
But I remind myself that wanting a better life is not asking for too much.
Wanting happiness is not selfish.
Wanting love that feels safe is not unrealistic.
Wanting independence is not pride.
Wanting to become the woman I know I can be is not impossible.
I have spent enough time questioning whether I am worthy.
Now I want to spend my time becoming.
Becoming stronger.
Becoming wiser.
Becoming independent.
Becoming the woman I once needed when I was younger.
And maybe that is the greatest gift I can give myself.
Not a perfect life.
Not a life without pain.
But a life where I no longer abandon myself just to keep other people comfortable.
A life where my voice matters.
Where my dreams matter.
Where my happiness matters.
A life I choose.
