The Shadow’s Contract

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Tasked with infiltrating a heavily fortified coastal estate to assassinate ruthless syndicate kingpin Caspian Cole, elite operative Maeve Grier instead finds herself locked in a fourteen-day game of dangerous survival that melts into a volatile, fiercely possessive romance. As the pair hunt an internal traitor hiding within Caspian's inner circle, their intense tactical collaboration gives way to a consuming, high-heat intimacy that strips away Maeve's icy defenses. However, just as their isolation turns into absolute devotion, a shattering revelation exposes the truth: the very contract that brought Maeve through the skylight was engineered by Caspian's own corporate holding firm years prior, plunging her into a masterclass of psychological entrapment just as armed operatives breach the estate.

Chapter 1

The industrial rain outside Maeve’s safehouse fell in heavy, iron-gray sheets, drumming a monotonous rhythm against the corrugated tin roof. Inside, the world was stripped down to the essentials: polished steel, black tactical gear, and the low hum of a cooling fan inside her encrypted terminal.

Maeve sat at her workbench, methodically cleaning the edge of a seven-inch carbon-steel blade with an oiled cloth. Her fingers moved with practiced, subconscious precision. In a city built on corruption, where blood was the primary currency and loyalties dissolved at the first sign of gold, she had survived by keeping her rules absolute. Never work with partners. Never leave a paper trail. And, above all, never care who is paying the bill.

A sudden, sharp ping cut through the silence.

Maeve didn't flinch. She set the blade down slowly and turned toward the glowing terminal monitor. An encrypted message had bounced through six proxy servers, stripping away every shred of metadata before landing in her private queue. Simultaneously, her secondary offshore bank account gave a soft, digital chiming sound.

She opened the transaction ledger first. The number staring back at her was absurd—eight digits, fully cleared, untraceable cryptocurrency. It was half of the total bounty. Enough money to retire three times over, buy an island far beyond the reach of the city's corrupt syndicates, and build a fortress.

Then she opened the target dossier attached to the ping.

The screen flashed as a high-resolution file decrypted, revealing a single line of text above a dense file: Target: Caspian Cole. High-Priority Execution Window: Tonight.

Maeve leaned forward, her elbows resting on the steel desk, her blue-gray eyes narrowing as she skimmed the bio. Caspian Cole. The name alone carried weight like lead. He was the unspoken king of the city's black market, an elusive mastermind who controlled everything from the shipping docks to the highest halls of local government. Up until now, he had been considered untouchable—a ghost living in a reinforced estate high on the obsidian cliffs above the harbor.

She scrolled down to the photo included in the file.

The image was clearly taken from a distance with a high-powered lens, yet the man in the frame looked as if he knew the camera was trained on him. He was striking—devastatingly so. He wore a midnight-black suit, tailored so immaculately it looked sculpted to his frame. Dark, thick hair fell in loose, elegant waves just over his forehead, contrasting sharply with the pale, aristocratic cut of his jawline. But it was his eyes that locked Maeve in place.

They weren't brown or hazel. They were a vivid, unnatural shade of deep crimson, glowing like dying embers under the dim ambient light of the photo. They held a cold, predatory intelligence that seemed to pierce right through the digital screen.

Maeve felt a strange, unfamiliar coil of heat tighten in the pit of her stomach. She caught her breath, annoyance quickly chasing the sensation away. He was breathtaking, yes, but dangerous men were a dime a dozen in her line of work. Handsome targets died just as easily as ugly ones once steel hit an artery.

Closing the file, she memorized the floor plans embedded in the lower half of the drop. No employer name. No return address. Just a target, a fortune, and a single night to do the job.

Two hours later, Maeve was invisible.

She stood on the high stone wall overlooking the northern boundary of the Cole estate, enveloped in rain and shadow. Her suit was a matte black hybrid fabric that absorbed light and suppressed thermal signatures, snug against her frame without restricting her motion. She wore twin throwing daggers snugged against her thighs, a tactical glass-cutter at her belt, and her primary double-edged blade resting cold against her shoulder blade.

Below her, the estate sprawled across three acres of manicured gardens and dense forest. The architecture was a hybrid of gothic stone and modern glass, surrounded by a razor-wire fence and a security grid that would make a military vault jealous.

Maeve crouched on the ledge, her eyes tracking the sweeping yellow beams of the ground patrols. Two guards every four minutes on the perimeter path. Infrared sweepers rotated on thirty-second intervals along the roofline.

"Rookies," she murmured into the rain.

She timed her drop to the exact second the thermal scanner panned west. Lowering herself off the wall, she fell twenty feet, landing in a soft, soundless roll in the mulch of the rose garden. The damp earth absorbed the impact, and within a heartbeat, she was pressed flush against the outer stone wall of the manor's west wing.

She moved like water. Slipping beneath the line of sight of the ground cameras, she reached the base of the master suite’s private tower. The stone was rain-slicked and ancient, providing just enough deep mortar grooves for her gloved fingertips and custom-gripped boots to find traction.

Muscle memory took over. Maeve scaled the sheer stone facade with fluid, lethal grace, her lungs breathing steady, measured calm despite the burn in her shoulders. Thirty feet up. Forty. Fifty.

She reached the perimeter of the second-story balcony. Sliding her hand over the lip, she paused, checking for wire sensors. Clear. She hoisted herself over the heavy marble balustrade, dropping into the shadow of the tall, floor-to-ceiling glass doors that led directly into Caspian’s private quarters.

Through the rain-streaked glass, the interior of the bedroom was plunged in darkness, illuminated only by the faint, silver glow of the moon filtering through heavy velvet drapes.

Maeve pulled a compact electronic bypass tool from her utility belt and attached it to the lock seam of the glass door. A small LED flickered red, then green. The heavy deadbolt retracted with a tiny, pneumatic click.

She slipped inside.

The air in the room was warm, rich with the lingering scent of sandalwood, leather, and fine bourbon. It was a space designed for absolute luxury—dark mahogany furniture, deep-pile Persian rugs that swallowed her footsteps entirely, and a sprawling king-sized bed elevated on a low platform across the room.

Maeve closed the door behind her, pulling her primary blade from its sheath. The steel made no sound as it slid free.

She locked her focus on the bed. Under the heavy silver comforter, a tall, broad shape was visible, rising and falling in the slow, rhythmic cadence of deep sleep.

Maeve’s heart rate slowed to a freeze. The thrill of the hunt burned out, replaced by the clinical, icy focus of execution. She didn't think about the red eyes in the photo, or the millions waiting in her account, or the mystery of who had sent her here. There was only the mark, and the stroke.

She crossed the Persian rug, floating over the floor like a specter.

Three paces away. Two. One.

She raised the blade high above her head, locking both hands around the hilt for maximum torque. She drove the steel down with brutal, ruthless power, plunging the blade straight through the heavy blankets and deep into the center of the sleeping form's chest.

There was no crack of bone. No spray of blood. No choked, dying gasp.

Only the hollow, sickening sound of tearing linen, followed immediately by a cloud of white down feathers bursting violently into the dark room.

Maeve’s eyes widened in realization a fraction of a second too late.

The mattress was stuffed with extra pillows. It was empty.
