Chapter 2
THE POWER OF A DREAM
Chapter Two: The First Step
Five years had passed since Michael, John, and Daniel stood together on their university graduation ground and promised themselves that the future would be theirs.
Now, the future had arrived.
But it did not arrive equally for all three of them.
Lagos was already awake that morning. Cars filled the roads, buses moved through the busy streets, and people hurried to their different destinations, each carrying their own hopes and problems.
Outside the gate of their old university, the three friends stood together one last time.
Michael adjusted his expensive wristwatch and looked around confidently. His clothes were stylish, and everything about his appearance suggested that he was ready for a successful life.
John stood beside him with a small bag over his shoulder. His clothes were simple, and unlike Michael, he had no family connections waiting for him.
Daniel held his notebook and camera close to himself. There was excitement in his eyes.
Michael looked at the two friends.
“Finally, we are done with school. Now the real world begins.”
Daniel smiled.
“Yes. This is where we prove ourselves.”
John looked ahead.
“Everyone has a dream. I believe mine will come true someday.”
Michael laughed slightly.
“Dreams are good, John, but dreams alone don't change anything.”
John nodded.
“Maybe not today, but with hard work and God's help, anything is possible.”
Michael simply smiled.
“We will see.”
The three friends shook hands before walking away.
Michael headed toward one direction.
Daniel took another road.
John walked in a different direction.
Three friends.
Three dreams.
Three completely different beginnings.
Michael's Easy Life
Michael returned to his family's mansion that morning.
While John was preparing to search for opportunities, Michael walked into a luxurious office inside his father's home and sat behind a large desk.
Everything around him reminded him of his family's wealth.
A few minutes later, his father entered carrying some documents.
“Michael,” he said, placing the documents on the desk, “your uncle has spoken with some people in government. This connection will help you enter politics.”
Michael smiled proudly.
“I told you, Dad. I was born for greatness.”
His father looked at him carefully.
“Remember, power comes with responsibility.”
Michael leaned back in his chair.
“Don't worry. I know how to handle power.”
His father nodded, though there was still concern in his eyes.
After he left the room, Michael stood and walked toward the large glass window.
He looked at his reflection.
For a moment, he imagined himself standing before thousands of people.
He smiled.
“President Michael Williams…”
He paused.
“It sounds good.”
Michael had always believed that success was waiting for him.
And now, it seemed to be.
Daniel Starts His Journey
While Michael was preparing to enter the world of politics through his family's connections, Daniel was beginning from somewhere much smaller.
That afternoon, he walked into a small newsroom.
The office was far from luxurious. Old computers sat on worn-out desks, papers were stacked everywhere, and the room was filled with the sound of keyboards and ringing phones.
Daniel looked around with a smile.
A senior journalist approached him and handed him a notebook.
“Welcome, Daniel.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“This place may not be big,” the journalist said, “but every great journalist starts somewhere.”
Daniel held the notebook tightly.
“I just want to tell people's stories and make a difference.”
The older man smiled.
“Then remember this: always chase the truth, not popularity.”
Daniel nodded.
“I won't forget.”
He found an empty desk, sat down, and began writing his first report.
His journey had started.
It wasn't glamorous.
It wasn't easy.
But it was his.
John's Search for Opportunity
John's journey was very different.
He spent his days walking into different company offices with his CV in his hands.
At one office, he approached the receptionist.
“Good morning. I'm looking for an opportunity.”
The receptionist checked his application.
“I'm sorry. We are not hiring right now.”
John forced a smile.
“Thank you. I understand.”
He walked out.
At another company, he met a manager.
“We need someone with experience,” the manager told him.
John nodded.
“I understand. Thank you for your time.”
Another door closed.
Then another.
And another.
By the end of the day, John's legs were tired, but he still held his CV.
He had heard the word no more times than he could count.
Yet he kept moving.
Another Rejection
That evening, John sat alone at a bus stop on a busy Lagos street.
People passed around him as buses stopped and left.
He took out his phone.
A new email notification appeared.
John opened it.
Another rejection.
He stared at the screen for a few seconds before locking his phone.
“How many more times will I hear no?” he whispered.
He looked toward the evening sky.
For a moment, discouragement tried to take over.
Then he remembered his dream.
He remembered what Daniel had told him years ago.
Your background doesn't determine where you're going.
John took a deep breath.
“But I won't give up.”
He stood up.
“A closed door doesn't mean the end.”
He adjusted his bag and continued walking.
He had been rejected.
But he had not been defeated.
The Three Friends Meet Again
Some time later, the three friends met again at a small restaurant.
Daniel arrived first, carrying his journalist notebook.
John came shortly afterward, dressed simply.
Then Michael arrived in expensive clothes and walked toward their table with confidence.
Daniel stood up.
“Wow, it feels good seeing everyone again.”
John smiled.
“Yes, it's been a while.”
They greeted one another and sat down.
Michael looked at both of them.
“So, tell me. How is everyone doing?”
Daniel smiled.
“I'm working with a media company now.”
Michael nodded.
“That's good.”
Then he looked at John.
“And you?”
John hesitated for a moment.
“I'm still looking for an opportunity, but I believe something will come.”
Michael smiled.
But there was something about his smile that John recognized immediately.
Michael's Mockery
Michael leaned back in his chair.
“John, you are still searching for a job?”
John nodded.
“Yes, but I won't stop trying.”
Michael laughed.
“Brother, be realistic. Politics and big positions are not for people without connections.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Michael, why do you always talk like that?”
Michael looked at him.
“I'm just saying the truth.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No. You're looking down on him. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring.”
Michael shrugged.
“We will see.”
John remained quiet.
He had heard those words before.
You can't.
It's not for people like you.
Be realistic.
But this time, he refused to argue.
He simply listened.
Daniel's Encouragement
After they left the restaurant, Daniel and John walked together.
The streets were already getting darker.
Daniel placed a hand on John's shoulder.
“Don't allow Michael's words to enter your heart.”
John sighed.
“Sometimes it hurts hearing those things.”
“I know,” Daniel replied. “But your background doesn't decide your future.”
John looked at him.
“I believe that too.”
Daniel smiled.
“One day, people will respect the person you become, not where you started.”
John smiled.
Those words gave him strength.
Michael's Warning
Not far behind them, Michael stood beside his expensive car, watching John walk away.
He shook his head.
“I want to see how far you will go without money or connections.”
Daniel turned around.
“Michael, stop saying things like that.”
Michael looked at him.
“Why? Am I wrong?”
Daniel answered calmly.
“Because nobody knows tomorrow.”
John stopped walking.
He turned around and looked at Michael.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then John said quietly:
“Let time answer that question.”
He turned around and continued walking.
Michael watched him disappear into the night.
John's Determination
Later that night, John returned to his small room.
There was nothing luxurious about it.
He sat at a small table and opened his notebook.
Then he began writing down his goals.
At the top of the page, he wrote:
I WILL SUCCEED.
John stared at the words.
His journey had not started the way he wanted.
He had no wealthy father.
No powerful uncle.
No government connection.
No one promising him a position.
But he still had something Michael could never take away from him.
His determination.
John closed his notebook.
“My beginning may be small,” he whispered, “but my story is not finished.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
“God has a plan for me.”
Then he switched off the light.
Outside, Lagos continued moving.
Somewhere in the city, Michael was preparing for a life of power.
Daniel was chasing the truth.
And John was still chasing his dream.
They had taken their first steps.
But none of them knew where those steps would eventually lead.
Three friends. Three dreams. Three different paths.
And destiny had a way of bringing people back together.
To be continued…
