Before we begin, meet the people responsible for most of the chaos.

Greer Ellery

Role: Main Character / Heroine

Occupation: Clock Restorer

Greer is practical, independent, stubborn, and quick with a sarcastic remark. She has little patience for polished institutions or people who seem too perfect to be real. She trusts tools, mechanisms, and things she can understand far more than destiny or royal tradition. Her life changes when a mysterious silver mate mark appears on her wrist—and seems to point directly toward the royal palace.

Personality: Witty, skeptical, independent, hardworking, observant, outspoken

First Impression: A woman determined to prove that even a supposedly flawless king must have faults.

King Alaric

Role: Male Lead / King

Occupation: King of the Northern Territories

Alaric is known throughout the kingdom as almost impossibly competent. Newspapers portray him as handsome, intelligent, responsible, kind, and apparently incapable of making an ordinary mistake. Greer finds his flawless public image deeply suspicious and becomes determined to discover what the newspapers are hiding.

Although Alaric does not physically appear in Chapter 1, his reputation—and Greer’s irritation with it—shapes the entire opening of the story.

Personality: Publicly polished, capable, responsible, mysterious

First Impression: The king who seems far too perfect to actually be real.

Tessa Wynn

Role: Greer’s Best Friend

Occupation: Apothecary

Tessa is Greer’s calm, observant best friend and one of the few people who can match Greer’s humor without becoming overwhelmed by it. She listens to Greer complain about King Alaric’s impossible reputation and quietly enjoys pointing out holes in Greer’s arguments.

Where Greer reacts first and questions later, Tessa tends to watch, think, and then deliver exactly the comment Greer does not want to hear.

Personality: Calm, intelligent, patient, dryly funny, perceptive

First Impression: The sensible best friend who knows Greer better than Greer sometimes knows herself.

Mrs. Hensley

Role: Minor Character / Greer’s Acquaintance

Mrs. Hensley is mentioned as one of the many people determined to keep Greer informed about King Alaric’s latest accomplishments. She previously read Greer an article about the king rescuing a child’s kite from an elm tree—while Greer was trying to work.

Personality: Enthusiastic, talkative, interested in royal news

First Impression: Another citizen happily contributing to Greer’s growing irritation with the supposedly flawless king.
