Chapter 1
The Unexpected Hero
Theo Mercer lay sprawled under the sprawling oak tree, an open notebook resting on his face. Sunlight warmed his hoodie, and for a moment, the world felt calm—almost too calm.
Suddenly, pounding footsteps shattered the peace. Shouts rang across the courtyard:
“Hey! Get back here, Voss!”
Theo lifted his head slowly. Through the shadows of his hoodie, he saw a girl—Elena Voss—darting across the campus,
trying to escape a group of bullies. She ducked into a storage room, but they weren’t far behind.
“Gotcha now!” one yelled, reaching toward her.
Then—CRASH! The storage room window shattered. Theo stepped through, hoodie pulled over his face, shadows hiding his eyes.
The bullies froze. Every instinct told them something was wrong. Then… Theo looked at them.
His gaze pierced the room like fire.Silent, cold, unflinching. One by one, the bullies felt the heat of his stare, a fear they couldn’t explain. Without a word, without a move, their courage crumbled. They turned and ran, stumbling over scattered glass, leaving Elena trembling but safe.
Exhausted, Elena sank to the floor, brushing shards of glass from her sleeve. “Thanks… dude,” she said, panting.
Theo didn’t reply. He didn’t even move.
“I… uh… could you get me a glass of water?” she asked.
He still didn’t respond, only giving her a single glance. And that glance… it stopped her. His eyes were light red, glowing faintly in the shadows of the hoodie. Something magnetic, something dangerous, yet… mesmerizing.
Her breath caught. “Your eyes… are they… from birth? Or contacts?”
A small, calm voice broke the silence. Soft, clean, mature beyond his seventeen years: “Natural,” he whispered. Elena’s cheeks warmed, her heart skipped a beat, and for the first time, she realized… she was falling.
The bell rang sharply, signaling the start of class.
Elena blinked and realized she’d been staring too long.
She smoothed her hair, trying to hide her flustered expression. Theo didn’t move. He didn’t follow her.
He simply adjusted the notebook on his face, leaning back against the oak tree, as if nothing had happened.
But Elena knew. Somehow, she knew something about him wasn’t ordinary.
As she walked away toward the college entrance, she couldn’t help but glance back.
Theo’s hoodie obscured his features, but those eyes… those impossible, glowing, light-red eyes stayed with her.
He was quiet, aloof, and strange.
But beneath that calm exterior, there was something… dangerous, and yet undeniably captivating.
The day had begun with an ordinary sunlit morning, but both of their lives were about to change forever.
