Chapter 1 The Math Of Devotion
The morning sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Silas Sterling’s penthouse, warming the scattered sheets of financial law notes spread across the marble dining table.
Riley sat cross-legged on a plush leather chair, a pink highlighter tucked behind her ear and a faint smudge of ink on her cheek. She let out a dramatically loud sigh, throwing her head back.
"If I have to memorize one more clause about international trade compliance, my head is going to physically explode," she groaned, pouting as Silas walked into the room.
Silas, pristine in a tailored gray suit jacket with his tie slightly loosened, chuckled softly. He set a freshly made iced vanilla latte right beside her notebooks, leaning down to press a tender kiss to her temple.
"You're going to ace it, princess," Silas said smoothly, his voice warm and steady. "You’ve been studying for three weeks straight. The Mercer name doesn't need a top marks degree, but I know how much proving yourself means to you."
Riley looked up at him, her dark eyes sparkling with playful warmth. She grabbed his tie, tugging him down until their noses almost touched. "I don't just want to pass, Silas. When we merge our lives, I want to actually understand the Sterling portfolio, not just stand beside you in pretty dresses looking sweet."
"You look breathtaking no matter what you're doing," he murmured, his thumb gently wiping the ink smudge from her cheek. "Take a break. Let’s go for dinner tonight at the club. Just you and me."
"Deal," she giggled, kissing his cheek before returning to her books, completely wrapped in the warmth of a love she believed was unbreakable.
A few miles away, inside the dark, mahogany-lined study of the Sterling estate, the atmosphere was entirely devoid of warmth.
James Sterling stood by the glass wall, staring out over the estate grounds. His knuckles were white against his crystal glass, his eyes hungry and hollow with an unyielding obsession for total market dominance. Opposite him, his wife, Rena Sterling, sat poised on a velvet sofa, setting down a delicate porcelain teacup with a sharp clink.
"She was here again yesterday, James," Rena said in a cold, dismissive tone. "Laughing loudly in the gardens, talking about her university classes like a naive schoolgirl. Riley Mercer is a sweet child, but sweetness is a liability in our world."
"She is an elite, Rena," James snapped, turning around. "The Mercer family carries pedigree."
"Pedigree isn't pure leverage!" Rena countered, her voice rising with icy precision. "The Mercers have hit a glass ceiling. They cannot buy us the supreme seats in the High Council, and you know it. Silas needs a woman who commands absolute fear and political dominance, not an innocent, playful girl who spends her days cramming for entry-level exams."
The heavy oak door opened, and Silas stepped into the room. The relaxed, affectionate smile he had worn with Riley minutes ago was completely gone, replaced by a cool, unreadable mask.
"You called for me?" Silas asked, leaning against the edge of his father's desk.
"We need to talk about the future of this family," James said, stepping toward his son. "Our expansion into the eastern territories has stalled. The Mercers cannot clear those paths for us. But the Blackwoods can."
Silas raised an eyebrow, his expression calculating rather than shocked. "The Blackwoods?"
"Vanessa Blackwood," Rena chimed in, walking over to smooth the lapel of Silas’s jacket. "Her father holds the seats, the shipping routes, and the political immunity we need. The Blackwoods are twice as powerful as the Mercers. Vanessa is cold, sharp, and raised for real power. She is the daughter-in-law this empire requires."
Silas remained silent for a long beat. He thought of Riley—her bright laugh, her blind devotion, the innocent way she looked at him as if he were her entire world.
"Riley loves me," Silas said quietly, though there was no real defense in his tone—only a statement of fact.
"Love does not secure an empire, Silas," James growled, leaning heavily over the desk, his eyes burning with greed. "Are you a boy chasing a childhood fairytale, or are you a Sterling ready to rule?"
Silas closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. Underneath the charming, perfect boyfriend Riley saw every day lay a man who craved authority far more than affection. To him, love was a luxury; power was a necessity.
When Silas opened his eyes, they were as cold as stone.
"What are the terms of the proposal?" Silas asked smoothly.
Rena smiled, a sharp, triumphant curve of her lips. "The Blackwoods are hosting a private gala on Friday. You will attend alone. Vanessa already knows the arrangement, and her father is ready to sign the preliminary merger contracts the moment the ring is on her finger."
Silas adjusted his cuffs, his mind already shifting from the woman who adored him to the power that awaited him.
"Arrangements made," Silas said softly. "I'll handle Riley when the time is right."
