Chapter 1: The Two Alphas

The mountains of Korea were beautiful at night.

Silver moonlight covered the trees, and a cool wind moved through the branches. Far away from the bright lights of Seoul, two ancient wolf clans lived hidden among the mountains and forests.

The first was the Haneul Clan.

They lived high in the northern mountains, where the air was colder and storms were common. Their wolves were known for their connection to the moon and sky. Some could control wind. Others could create lightning or sense changes in the weather.

But the most powerful ability belonged to their Alpha, Kang Min-jae.

Min-jae was twenty-two years old and had been Alpha of the Haneul Clan for almost two years. He had silver-black hair, gray eyes, and a serious expression that made most people think twice before challenging him.

His greatest power was called Moonfire.

Unlike normal fire, Moonfire burned with a silver-blue glow. It could melt magical barriers, protect his pack, and become powerful enough to light up an entire forest.

He also possessed another rare ability.

Storm Howl.

When Min-jae transformed into his Alpha wolf, his howl could summon powerful winds and even flashes of lightning from the sky.

His wolf form was enormous, with thick silver-black fur and glowing blue eyes.

The members of his clan respected him.

They also feared what would happen if someone ever pushed him too far.

But there was one person Min-jae had never been able to tolerate.

Lee Ji-hoon.

Ji-hoon was the twenty-one-year-old Alpha of the Mirae Clan, a powerful clan that lived on the other side of the mountain range.

The Mirae Clan was different from Haneul.

Their wolves were connected to forests, shadows, and the earth.

Ji-hoon's strongest ability was Shadow Step, which allowed him to disappear into one shadow and appear from another.

He could also use Nature Calling, commanding vines, roots, and trees to move according to his will.

His wolf form was just as intimidating as Min-jae's.

He became a giant dark-red wolf with glowing golden eyes.

For generations, Haneul and Mirae had been rivals.

The clans had argued over territory, resources, and ancient magical sites for longer than anyone could remember.

As children, Min-jae and Ji-hoon had heard the same stories.

"Never trust a Mirae wolf."

"Never turn your back on Haneul."

Neither Alpha had ever questioned those warnings.

Until now.

Min-jae stood on a rocky cliff overlooking the Haneul territory.

The moon was unusually bright.

He could feel something strange in the air.

The wind wasn't moving normally.

It seemed to be circling the mountain.

Min-jae closed his eyes.

He could hear everything.

The trees moving.

The distant river.

The footsteps of his guards.

Then—

A deep sound rolled through the mountains.

BOOM.

Min-jae opened his eyes.

The ground beneath his feet shook.

"What was that?" one of the guards asked.

Min-jae didn't answer.

He stared toward the southern forest.

A strange black glow had appeared between the trees.

His instincts immediately told him something was wrong.

"Get everyone inside," he ordered.

"But Alpha—"

"Now."

The guards hurried away.

Min-jae raised one hand.

Silver-blue flames appeared around his fingers.

The Moonfire flickered in the wind.

Then he heard it.

A howl.

It wasn't the howl of a normal wolf.

It was deeper.

Older.

Almost like it had been waiting beneath the earth for centuries.

Min-jae's eyes narrowed.

"That wasn't a Haneul wolf."

Another howl answered from the southern forest.

This one was different.

Golden energy flashed between the trees.

Min-jae recognized the power immediately.

"Mirae."

His jaw tightened.

Of course.

If something was happening near the border, Ji-hoon was probably already there.

On the other side of the mountain, Ji-hoon stood among the trees.

He had felt the same disturbance.

Leaves were shaking even though there was almost no wind.

The animals had disappeared.

Even the insects had gone silent.

Ji-hoon slowly looked around.

"Something is here."

A Mirae warrior stepped beside him.

"Alpha, should we return to the village?"

Ji-hoon shook his head.

"No. I want to know what caused this."

He placed his hand against the trunk of an ancient tree.

His power traveled through the bark.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the roots beneath the ground moved.

Ji-hoon's eyes widened.

The roots were afraid.

That was impossible.

Plants didn't normally react to magic like this.

"What did you find?" the warrior asked.

Ji-hoon pulled his hand away.

"Something underground."

Suddenly, the earth cracked.

A black stone pushed through the dirt.

It was about the size of Ji-hoon's hand.

Strange silver lines covered its surface.

At the center was a symbol.

A circle.

Half silver.

Half black.

Ji-hoon stared at it.

He had seen the symbol before.

Not in real life.

In an ancient Mirae book.

The book had described an old supernatural legend.

A power that appeared only when two opposing Alpha bloodlines came together.

An ancient guardian.

A power capable of changing the balance between every wolf clan in Korea.

Ji-hoon whispered the words he remembered.

"The Eclipse."

Before he could say anything else, the black stone suddenly released a wave of energy.

BOOM!

Trees bent away from it.

Ji-hoon was thrown backward.

He quickly used Shadow Step, disappearing into the darkness before he could hit the ground.

He reappeared several feet away.

His golden eyes glowed.

"Everyone stay back!"

The warriors obeyed.

The black stone floated into the air.

Then a voice seemed to echo through the forest.

Not a human voice.

Not a wolf.

Something ancient.

"Moon and shadow..."

Ji-hoon's heart began beating faster.

He looked toward the northern mountains.

"...shall meet."

The stone fell.

The forest became completely silent.

Hours later, Min-jae stood in the Haneul meeting hall.

The elders surrounded a large wooden table.

An old map of the mountains was spread across it.

"We felt the disturbance too," one elder said.

"Was it an attack?" Min-jae asked.

"We don't know."

"Then find out."

The elders exchanged worried looks.

One finally spoke.

"Alpha, there is something you should know."

Min-jae looked at him.

"What?"

"The last time this energy appeared was hundreds of years ago."

Silence filled the room.

"Why?" Min-jae asked.

The elder pointed toward the map.

"Because it is connected to an ancient power."

Min-jae studied the map.

"Which power?"

The elder's expression became serious.

"The Eclipse."

Min-jae immediately remembered the strange howl.

"What does it want?"

"We don't know."

"Then who does?"

The elder slowly looked toward the southern border.

"Perhaps the Mirae Clan."

Min-jae's expression hardened.

"You think Ji-hoon knows something?"

"He may."

Min-jae stood.

"Then I'll ask him myself."

At almost the exact same time, Ji-hoon reached the northern border.

He had followed the strange energy until he reached an old stone bridge separating Haneul and Mirae territory.

He stopped.

Someone was already standing there.

Min-jae.

The two Alphas stared at each other.

Neither moved.

For years, they had heard stories about one another.

Now they were standing face-to-face.

Min-jae's gray eyes narrowed.

Ji-hoon's golden eyes seemed to glow beneath the moonlight.

"You crossed into Haneul territory," Min-jae said.

Ji-hoon crossed his arms.

"And you're standing on the border."

"You're still on my side."

"Then maybe you should build a bigger border."

Min-jae's expression darkened.

Ji-hoon almost smiled.

The tension between them was immediate.

But before either Alpha could say another word—

The ground shook.

Both men turned.

A crack appeared in the earth between them.

Black energy rose from beneath the bridge.

Min-jae's Moonfire burst into existence.

Ji-hoon's shadows moved around his feet.

Neither attacked the other.

Instead, both stared at the darkness.

Something was coming.

Something powerful.

Something neither clan understood.

And somewhere deep beneath the Korean mountains, an ancient pair of glowing eyes opened for the first time in centuries.

The rivalry between Haneul and Mirae was about to change forever.

And neither Alpha knew that the person standing across from them would eventually become the most important person in their life.
