Season 1 · Part 1

Chapter 1: The Bargain in the Mist

═══════════════════════════════════

The forest stretched endlessly under a sky choked with grey cloud, its ancient trees standing like silent witnesses to things they would never speak of. Mist curled low between the roots, swallowing sound, swallowing light, swallowing hope.

Somewhere deep within that mist, a boy lay broken against the base of a twisted oak.

His name was Rudhran.

Blood soaked through the torn fabric at his side. His breath came in ragged pulls, each one scraping against something cracked inside his chest. He was no mage. He carried no gift of magic in his veins, no spark that the world seemed to hand so freely to everyone else. He was, by every measure the world used, ordinary. Worthless, some had called him. Useless, others had sneered.

Tonight, the forest had nearly finished what the world had started.

Rudhran pressed a trembling hand against the wound and let out a sound that was half sob, half growl — the sound of a person who had run out of tears and found only rage waiting underneath them.

"Why…" he whispered to no one. "Why was I born like this…"

The wind did not answer. But something else did.

A shape began to form within the mist ahead of him — not walking so much as arriving, the fog peeling away from a tall figure as though it did not wish to touch him. A pale, expressionless mask caught what little moonlight slipped through the canopy. Beneath a long dark coat, the stranger's presence pressed down on the clearing like a held breath.

Rudhran's body went rigid.

"Who… who's there?!" he croaked, dragging himself back against the tree. "Who… who are you?!"

The masked figure tilted his head, almost gently, the way one might look at a wounded animal.

"Hello there," the Gentleman said.

His voice was calm. Unhurried. Almost warm — which made it worse.

"Do you want to know who I am," he continued, taking a slow step closer, "…or the truth behind the tragedy you suffered?"

Rudhran's breath caught. Every hair on his body stood on end.

"How…" he stammered, "how do you know about that?!"

The Gentleman said nothing. He only waited, the silence itself an invitation.

And something in Rudhran broke open.

"What can change?!" he screamed into the mist, years of humiliation tearing loose all at once. "I have no magic! I have no worth! Someone like me doesn't even deserve to live in this world!"

The words echoed and died among the trees.

The Gentleman did not flinch. If anything, the mask seemed to soften, though no one could say how a mask could soften at all.

"I know everything," he said quietly. "Have you really never thought about changing your life?"

Rudhran's fists clenched in the dirt. "…What's the point."

"That is not true," the Gentleman replied, and for the first time there was something almost like sorrow in his tone — or perhaps it was hunger, dressed up to look like sorrow. "Everything in this world has a purpose. Shall I tell you what yours is?"

He crouched, bringing the blank white mask level with Rudhran's ruined, tear-streaked face.

"If you desire immense, terrifying power… and an unbreakable body… you must pay the price." A pause, deliberate, final. "You shall serve as my slave for eternity."

The forest seemed to hold its breath along with the boy.

Rudhran stared into the mask, into the two dark hollows where eyes should have been, and saw in them not evil — but an escape. A door out of a life that had never once been kind to him.

"If I serve you…" His voice cracked. "Will you truly give me that power?"

"I never make promises I cannot keep."

Rudhran closed his eyes. Somewhere far away, the last fragile piece of the boy he used to be let go.

"Then I accept," he whispered. "My life belongs to you."

* * *

The Gentleman rose to his full height, and for the first time, he smiled beneath the mask — though no one would ever see it.

He lifted his cane, its silver head catching the moonlight, and struck it once against the earth.

"RISE, DOMAIN OF SHADOWS!"

The ground answered.

A deep, groaning roar tore up from beneath the forest floor as black stone erupted skyward, spires and towers wrenching themselves free of the soil like the fingers of something ancient clawing its way back into the world. Trees that had stood for centuries were splintered and swallowed whole as a vast gothic palace tore itself into existence, its shadow falling over the clearing like a second, darker night.

Rudhran could only watch, mouth open, as the forest that had been his prison — and nearly his grave — was devoured beneath the foundations of his new master's domain.

* * *

The transformation began before the dust had even settled.

It started in his hands. A black smoke curled from his fingertips, thickening, hardening, until his nails split and reformed as long, curved claws. He screamed — not in pain alone, but in the horror of watching himself unravel and rebuild into something no longer entirely human.

His spine arched. Something pushed up through the skin at his temples, twin points breaking through in a slow, grinding agony as horns emerged. His teeth lengthened into fangs behind lips that no longer quite fit his face. Every nerve in his body was on fire, and still he did not beg the Gentleman to stop.

He wanted this.

When the smoke finally cleared, what knelt in the crater where the boy had once lain was no longer Rudhran. It was something larger, something darker — a Shadow Beast wrapped in coiling black mist, eyes burning a cold, merciless red.

The Gentleman regarded his creation with open delight.

"Magnificent," he murmured. "Go forth… and fulfill your duty."

* * *

The village at the forest's edge never saw it coming.

The Beast that had been Rudhran tore through the tree line like a living storm, and the screaming began almost immediately. Villagers who had once called him worthless now called out in terror as he moved among them — a mage's staff meant nothing against claws that could grip a man's skull and turn it with a single, casual motion; a ward-circle meant nothing against a creature that simply walked through it and let the flames it carried finish the rest. Homes burst into fire behind him. The night sky turned orange and full of smoke and screaming, and through it all the Beast did not hesitate, did not slow, did not remember mercy.

By the time it was done, only ash and silence remained where a village had once stood.

The Gentleman walked through the wreckage at his own unhurried pace, coat trailing through the soot, entirely unbothered by the devastation around him.

"Tell me," he said, stopping before his creation, "is this enough to quench your thirst for vengeance?"

The Beast lowered its massive head. When it spoke, its voice was a low, rasping growl — and yet, beneath the monstrousness of it, there was something achingly human left.

"What you have granted me brings unimaginable joy," it said. "No human ever respected me. They called me worthless and cast me aside. Yet you took someone like me as your servant." It bowed low, horns nearly scraping the scorched earth. "For that… I will bow my head to you for all eternity, my master!"

The Gentleman looked out over the burning village, over the empire of ash he had just been gifted, and smiled behind his mask once more.

"Then," he said softly, "let our conquest begin."

[ TITLE CARD ]

The screen fades to black and white. Streaks of stark white light cut jaggedly across the darkness like cracks of lightning, illuminating drifting embers and ash caught in grayscale. The camera slowly pushes forward through the haze — cave-dark, ominous — as particles swirl and the earth trembles faintly beneath an unseen weight. From within the flickering black-and-white streaks, letters assemble themselves out of smoke and light:

MAGIC WAR OF UNIVERSE

The title holds in monochrome, pulsing once with the beat of a distant war-drum — then the screen shakes, and cuts to black.
