Chapter 55 — The Mark Beneath the Paper
Chapter 55 — The Mark Beneath the Paper
Isadora stared down at the object resting in her palm.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Elara remained across the room, watching her carefully.
“What is it?” Elara finally asked.
Isadora turned the object over.
It was small enough to fit comfortably in her hand. An old silver pendant, darkened slightly with age, hung from a thin chain. The surface was worn, but the symbol carved into its center remained visible.
Three curved lines.
A small circle.
The same mark they had seen beside the Evermere River.
Isadora's fingers tightened around it.
“I've seen this before.”
Elara's expression changed.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
That answer frustrated Isadora almost immediately.
She closed her eyes, trying to reach for the memory.
There was something.
A room.
A voice.
Someone placing something into her hand.
Then nothing.
The memory disappeared before she could grasp it.
“I remember the symbol,” she whispered.
“But not where?”
“No.”
Elara came closer.
“May I?”
Isadora handed her the pendant.
Elara examined it without touching the carved symbol directly.
“This isn't from Evergreen Veil.”
Isadora looked at her.
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because I've seen this style before.”
“Where?”
Elara hesitated.
“Old family records.”
Isadora's attention sharpened.
“What family?”
Elara looked toward the window.
“Yours.”
The room seemed to become very still.
“My family?”
Elara nodded.
“I didn't know how much you remembered.”
“I didn't know there was anything to remember.”
“That is why I didn't tell you.”
Isadora took the pendant back.
“You knew this existed?”
“I knew there were old records with this symbol.”
“But you didn't know about this.”
“No.”
Isadora looked down at the chain again.
“Then why would someone send it to me?”
“That is the question.”
She walked to the table and sat down.
The pendant rested beside her untouched cup of tea.
Yesterday, Evergreen Veil had felt like a strange but peaceful place.
Today, it felt different.
Not dangerous.
Not threatening.
Just deeper than she had first understood.
“Who sent the parcel?”
“I don't know.”
“The Blue Lantern didn't say?”
“No.”
“Then how did it get there?”
Elara shook her head.
“It was waiting for you.”
Isadora looked up.
“That isn't an answer.”
“No,” Elara said quietly. “It isn't.”
For a moment, Isadora almost smiled.
Then she noticed something else.
The wrapping paper.
She picked it up and turned it over.
There was a faint impression beneath the paper where the pendant had rested.
A second mark.
Not the same symbol.
A single letter.
“E.”
Elara stepped closer.
“That's new.”
“You don't recognize it?”
“No.”
Isadora traced the impression with one finger.
“Then perhaps whoever sent this wants us to find something.”
Elara studied her.
“Perhaps.”
Isadora placed the paper beside the pendant.
“I don't like mysteries that arrive without explanations.”
“I know.”
“I prefer knowing what I'm dealing with.”
“I know that too.”
Isadora looked at her.
“How much do you know about my family?”
Elara didn't answer immediately.
“Enough to know there are things you were never told.”
The words settled between them.
Isadora felt an old ache she couldn't explain.
She had spent so much of her life believing that unanswered questions were simply part of being human.
But lately, too many of those questions seemed to be finding their way back to her.
“Then we start with the records,” she said.
Elara nodded.
“Where?”
“The oldest ones.”
A small smile touched Elara's face.
“I was hoping you'd say that.”
They gathered their coats.
Before leaving, Isadora slipped the pendant carefully around her neck.
The silver rested against her skin.
Cold at first.
Then warm.
She paused.
“Did you feel that?”
Elara looked at her.
“Feel what?”
“Nothing.”
Isadora glanced toward the pendant.
For the briefest moment, the carved circle seemed almost brighter than before.
Then it was only old silver again.
She said nothing.
Outside, the morning had begun to give way to afternoon.
The Evermere River continued its quiet journey through Evergreen Veil.
And somewhere beyond the village, hidden among old papers, forgotten names, and family records, waited the first real answer.
Not to everything.
Not yet.
But perhaps to one question Isadora had carried for most of her life.
Where had she seen that mark before?
