Best Friends
Maya knew two things about Daniel.
First, he was impossible.Second, somehow, he had become her favorite person. They had been best friends for almost three years, which was long enough for Maya to know exactly how he took his coffee, what songs he played when he was stressed, and the particular silence that meant he was upset but didn't want to talk about it.Daniel knew her just as well.He knew she hated being late but somehow still managed to arrive two minutes before every lecture. He knew she would rather text than make a phone call. He knew she always carried snacks in her bag and would complain that she wasn't hungry right before stealing food from his plate. Most importantly, he knew when she was pretending to be okay. That morning, Maya walked across campus with her books pressed against her chest, already regretting agreeing to attend an eight o'clock lecture. She spotted Daniel sitting on their usual bench. He looked up as she approached."You're late."Maya glanced at her phone."It's 7:58.""The lecture starts at eight.""Exactly. I'm early."Daniel laughed."You have a very interesting understanding of time.""And you have a very annoying understanding of friendship."He moved his bag from the seat beside him."Sit."Maya smiled and dropped onto the bench. This was how most of their mornings went.No formal greetings. No awkwardness. No effort.Just them.Daniel handed her a bottle of water."You forgot yours."Maya stared at it."How did you know?""You forget it every Monday."She raised an eyebrow."You keep track?""Unfortunately."She smiled and took the bottle. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The campus was slowly filling with students. People hurried toward lecture halls, laughing and complaining about assignments. Somewhere nearby, someone was playing music loudly enough to annoy everyone within twenty meters.Maya leaned back."Do you ever think about what we'll be doing five years from now?"Daniel turned toward her."That's random.""Answer."He thought for a moment."Hopefully making money."She laughed."Of course.""What about you?""I don't know.""That's a lie."Maya looked at him."What?""You always know."She smiled softly.Maybe that was why she liked talking to Daniel. He saw through her without making her feel exposed."I want to be successful," she admitted. "I want to look back and know I actually did something with my life.""You will."The answer came so quickly that she looked at him."You sound very sure.""I am.""Why?"Daniel shrugged."Because you're Maya."She laughed, trying to hide the strange warmth that spread through her chest."That doesn't even make sense.""It makes perfect sense."Before she could respond, the bell rang from the lecture building.Daniel stood."Come on."Maya followed. As they walked inside, she noticed how naturally he slowed his pace whenever she fell behind. It was such a small thing. He probably didn't even notice he did it.But Maya did.She noticed everything about him.The way he smiled when he was genuinely happy. The way he rubbed the back of his neck when he was nervous. The way he always pretended not to care when he cared too much. And lately, she had started noticing something else. The way her heart reacted whenever he was close. She didn't like thinking about that.So she pushed the thought away.Daniel was her best friend. That was all.At least, that was what she told herself. After the lecture, they stopped at the campus café.Daniel ordered his usual meal while Maya stared at the menu."You're getting the same thing," he said."I might surprise you.""You've ordered the same thing for the last six weeks.""People change.""Not you."She rolled her eyes."You're irritating.""And yet you keep coming back."Maya opened her mouth to reply but stopped. He was smiling. She smiled too. There were moments like this when their friendship felt almost too easy.Like they had known each other forever.Like there was nowhere else either of them would rather be.Daniel reached across the table and stole one of her fries."Hey!""You weren't eating it.""I was about to.""You've been saying that for five minutes."She tried to take it back, but he moved his hand away. They both laughed. For a few seconds, Maya forgot everything else. Then Daniel's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen. His smile changed. Not completely.Just enough for Maya to notice."Who is it?""Nobody."She narrowed her eyes."Daniel."He locked the phone."It's nothing."She stared at him suspiciously."You're hiding something.""I'm not.""You are."He smiled."Maybe."Maya leaned back."Fine. Keep your secrets."He looked at her for a moment. Then he said quietly, "You'd tell me if something was bothering you, right?""Of course.""Good."She nodded.Neither of them said anything else. But Maya couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted. She just didn't know what. That evening, Maya sat on her bed staring at her phone.A message from Daniel appeared.Daniel: You home? She smiled.Maya: Yes.Three dots appeared.Daniel: Good. She waited.Nothing.Then another message came.Daniel: Sleep early tonight.Maya frowned.Maya: Why?Daniel: Because you look tired. She stared at the screen. How did he always notice? She typed a response, deleted it, then typed another.Maya: You're beginning to sound like my mother. His reply came almost immediately.Daniel: Your mother is smarter than you.Maya laughed. She placed the phone beside her. Then picked it up again. She opened their chat and scrolled through old messages.Random jokes.Late-night conversations.Arguments over food.Pictures of terrible meals.Voice notes."Good luck" messages before exams."I got home" texts.Small things.Ordinary things.Except suddenly, they didn't feel ordinary anymore.Maya locked her phone."He's just my best friend," she whispered. She said it again, as if repeating it could make it true."Just my best friend."Across town, Daniel was lying on his bed doing exactly the same thing.Looking at his phone.Looking at her name.Wondering when his best friend had started feeling like something he was afraid to lose.Neither of them knew it yet.But their friendship was already changing. And sometimes, the most dangerous feelings are the ones that begin quietly. The ones that start with a friendship. The ones that make you wonder—What if we're not just friends anymore?
