Chapter 1
The day Embo was born, the entire village went silent.
Not because a baby had been born.
Babies were born every day.
It was because of who had given birth to her.
Her mother was eighty years old.
Her father was eighty too.
For years, people had watched the elderly couple live quietly in their large family home. Their walls were filled with photographs of their forty-eight sons—forty-eight boys who had grown up, moved away, married, started families of their own, and returned whenever they could.
Everyone believed their family was complete.
Then, one morning, everything changed.
A cry came from inside the house.
A baby's cry.
At first, the neighbours thought they had heard wrong.
Then someone ran outside shouting.
"There's a baby!"
Within minutes, people gathered outside the house.
"Whose baby is it?"
"Did one of the sons bring his child here?"
"No," an elderly woman whispered. "The baby belongs to them."
The crowd became even quieter.
"Them?"
She nodded slowly.
"Their daughter."
Nobody knew what to say.
Inside the house, Embo's mother held the tiny baby against her chest.
She looked exhausted, but there was a smile on her face.
"She's beautiful," she whispered.
Her husband sat beside her, staring at their daughter as though he was afraid that if he looked away, she might disappear.
After raising forty-eight sons, he had never imagined that he would one day hold a daughter.
He reached out and gently touched her tiny hand.
"Embo," he said.
Her mother looked at him.
"Embo?"
He smiled.
"Yes. Embo."
Outside, however, the village had already started talking.
Some people called her a miracle.
Others called her impossible.
Some questioned whether her parents were really capable of raising another child at their age.
But her parents didn't listen.
They had waited their entire lives for this moment.
And they had no idea that the little girl sleeping peacefully in her mother's arms would one day change not only their family...
but everyone who knew her.
---
Seventeen years later...
"Embo!"
She ignored the voice.
"EMBO!"
She finally looked up from her books.
"What?"
Lunga stood in the doorway, shaking his head.
"You've been studying for three hours."
Embo looked down at the open textbook in front of her.
"I have an exam tomorrow."
"You also have eyes that need rest."
She laughed.
"Since when are you worried about my eyes?"
"Since you started treating your books like they're your boyfriend."
Embo rolled her eyes.
"My books don't disappoint me."
Lunga laughed.
"Okay, that was personal."
Before Embo could respond, they heard a car stopping outside.
Then another.
And another.
She frowned.
"What is happening?"
Lunga walked toward the window.
His expression changed.
"Embo..."
"What?"
"There are people outside."
"Who?"
He looked back at her.
"I don't know."
A man stepped out of the first car carrying a folder.
Another person followed him.
Then another.
Embo slowly stood up.
Her heart began beating faster.
She had no idea who they were.
She had no idea why they were there.
And she certainly didn't know that the people standing outside her home had come because of something that would change her future forever.
