Lyra Hale pressed her forehead to the cold bus window as fog curled around the edge of the road like smoke. The sign creaked as they passed it:
"Welcome to Silver Hollow – Population: 2,189"
She hadn’t been back since she was thirteen. And she wouldn’t be here now if her aunt Iris hadn’t died alone in that eerie old cabin tucked deep in the woods.
The bus hissed to a stop. Lyra stepped out with one suitcase, boots crunching on gravel. Her coat did little to fight the mountain chill, but it wasn’t the cold that made her shiver.
It was the feeling that someone—something—was watching her.
