Chapter 1

Chapter 1 — The Reunion

Amara Williams had spent six months convincing herself that she was over Daniel Carter.

Six months of deleting his pictures.

Six months of ignoring his name whenever it appeared in her thoughts.

Six months of telling herself that she didn't care anymore.

And, for the most part, she believed it.

Until the first day at her new school.

Amara stood outside Westbrook High, staring at the enormous building in front of her. Students crowded the entrance, laughing, talking, and rushing to their classes.

She tightened her grip on her backpack.

“New school. New people. New beginning,” she whispered to herself.

That was the plan.

After everything that had happened with Daniel, she needed a fresh start.

Her mother had gotten a job in California, forcing them to move across the state. Amara had complained about leaving her old friends behind, but secretly, she was relieved.

Nobody here knew her story.

Nobody knew about Daniel.

Nobody knew how badly the breakup had hurt.

She walked through the school doors.

For the first few minutes, everything went perfectly.

She found her locker, checked her schedule, and even managed to find her first classroom without getting lost.

Then she heard a familiar laugh.

Amara stopped walking.

Her heart seemed to forget how to beat.

No.

It couldn't be.

She slowly turned around.

And there he was.

Daniel Carter.

Standing near the lockers.

The same dark hair.

The same smile.

The same person she had spent six months trying not to remember.

Amara froze.

Daniel looked up.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

His smile disappeared.

“Amara?”

She swallowed.

“Daniel.”

Six months disappeared in a second.

Every memory came rushing back—the late-night calls, the jokes, the promises, and finally, the day he had ended everything.

No explanation.

No warning.

Just three words she had never been able to forget.

We should break up.

Amara had begged him to tell her why.

He hadn't.

And now he was standing in front of her like nothing had happened.

“You go here?” Daniel asked quietly.

Amara almost laughed.

“Apparently.”

Before he could say anything else, a girl's voice came from behind him.

“Daniel, are you coming?”

Amara looked past him.

A beautiful girl was standing there.

She walked over and slipped her arm through Daniel's.

Daniel glanced at Amara.

“This is Chloe,” he said.

Chloe smiled politely.

“Hi.”

Amara forced a smile.

“Hey.”

“This is Amara,” Daniel added.

Chloe looked between them.

“You two know each other?”

There was a pause.

Daniel opened his mouth.

Amara answered first.

“We used to.”

The words felt heavier than they should have.

Chloe's smile faded slightly.

Daniel stared at Amara.

She didn't look away.

She wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of seeing her hurt.

“Nice meeting you,” Amara said, adjusting her backpack.

Then she walked away.

She didn't run.

She didn't cry.

She kept walking until she reached the bathroom.

The moment the door closed behind her, she leaned against the wall and exhaled shakily.

“Of all the schools in California…”

She looked at herself in the mirror.

“Why him?”

Her phone buzzed.

Amara pulled it out.

Unknown Number.

She frowned and opened the message.

Unknown: You really think moving away will make you forget him?

Amara's stomach dropped.

She stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

Unknown: Some stories don't end just because two people break up.

She looked around the empty bathroom.

Her hands trembled slightly.

Who was this?

And how did they know about Daniel?

Amara quickly typed a response.

Amara: Who is this?

The message showed as delivered.

No reply.

She waited.

Nothing.

Then another message appeared.

Unknown: Ask Daniel why he really left you.

Amara's heart sank.

She stared at the words.

For six months, she had wondered the exact same thing.

Why did Daniel leave?

Why did he refuse to explain?

And why had he looked so shocked to see her?

Amara locked her phone.

Maybe coming to this school hadn't been a fresh start after all.

Maybe it was the beginning of something she wasn't ready for.

Something involving Daniel.

Something someone desperately wanted her to uncover.

She walked out of the bathroom and headed toward class.

Across the hallway, Daniel was watching her.

And for the first time in six months, he looked afraid.

Not jealous.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Because Daniel knew something Amara didn't.

And he had promised himself she would never find out.

To be continued…
