The Spark

In the year 2478 AD, Earth basked in the sheer magnitude of its achievements. A united humanity wielded technology so advanced it made the most complex tasks trivial. Knowledge, culture society, all thrived in a golden age of peace and harmony. The universe beckoned, their promise of exploration tantalisingly near. Then, in a moment, the world was shattered.

No one could fathom the cause. They named it The Spark—a blinding light followed by a surge of crimson flame. The sky blazed, and the continents, as if pulled by invisible forces, groaned across the seas, merging into a single, spiralling landmass. At its core rose a towering, arid mountain, its peak untouched. Advanced safeguards preserved some lives, but billions fell as the earth reshaped itself. The new continent stretched outward, its arms encircling the desolate mountain like a cosmic embrace.

The survivors, reeling from loss, had barely begun to mourn when the cosmos convulsed. From realms unknown—perhaps beyond the stars, perhaps beyond reality—emerged the Fae. Over two hundred races, each distinct, their forms and abilities defying human understanding, as if drawn from myth. Torn from their worlds, their lands fused with Earth’s, spawning vibrant biomes teeming with alien flora and fauna.

First contact sparked fear and confusion, but a greater menace soon united them. From the shadows of dead humans rose the Shades, amorphous entities born from decay, their forms mirroring the darkest facets of mortality. They latched onto humans and Fae in an act known as masking, hiding within their hosts, waiting to twist them into grotesque horrors upon discovery. Necessity forged an alliance between humanity and Fae, their differences of language and culture fading before the imperative of survival.

Hope emerged with Ember, a crimson energy pulsing from natural fonts across the continent. Humans harnessed this versatile force, channelling it into searing blasts, chilling winds, or gentle healing. The Shades shrank from light, cowed by the sun and repelled by Ember’s radiance. In a shattered capital, a pivotal battle unfolded. Humanity, armed with Ember, joined the Farsr—shape-shifters whose claws tore through Shades—the Poukish, whose luminous flora wove life into the earth, and the G’rietz, warriors of unmatched ferocity. Together, they repelled the relentless Shades and their masked thralls.

The Shades proved indestructible in their entire, their essence tied to a pearlescent, stone-like nucleus. Unless contained in amber or bathed in light, they could reform. Extracting the nucleus from a masked host expelled the Shade, leaving the victim a pale, ashen shell—skin blanched, hair whitened, most never regaining their former functioning. Ancient records spoke of terrors beyond comprehension: Masquerades, monstrous amalgamations of masked beings rising from the shadows, their true purpose subject to intense speculation.

The war was gruelling, but the survivors—human and Fae—carved out space to rebuild. From the ruins rose Estellium, the first mega-city, joined over millennia by her daughter cities. A new order, The Shroud, emerged as a global government, uniting humans and displaced Fae, who, with no path home, embraced cooperation. The Shroud oversaw reconstruction, mediated tensions, and advanced research, military, and healthcare, its authority absolute in its quest to contain the Shades and rebuild. The Farsr, fiercely independent, declined to join, departing to forge their own path with the Shroud’s gratitude. Now, they are seldom seen, save for their youthful roamers, fleeting presences in mega-cities or remote settlements, no more than four seen in any one decade.

By 1997 AS, Estellium stands as the largest mega city in Esta—a Poukish term meaning “Fresh Land.” At its heart, in the Albar District, towers the Shroud’s citadel, a colossal beacon of order. A universal language has supplanted Earth’s ancient tongues, now half-forgotten. Culture, music, and fashion thrive in a vibrant renaissance, Estellium and its kin multicultural havens where human and Fae coexist, their contributions shaping Ember-lit streets and soaring architecture. The population nears pre-Spark levels, bolstered by hybrids—offspring of human and Fae unions, greeted with either acceptance or contempt.

The Shades remain a constant threat. The ′Shroud Investigation and Containment Service’ (SIC) stands as the primary defence, its elite agents monitoring Shade activity around the mega-cities. With reflexes bordering on the supernatural, they move like blurs against masked foes. Beyond combat, the SIC collaborates with peacekeeping forces like Estapol, empowered to arrest and investigate high-profile cases. Though fewer than a quarter million globally, each agent, some with a unique Assets, is a force to be reckoned with.

As a new millennium looms, airships glide through the skies, Omni-Wave technology connects the world, and silver fuels the economy. Life persists, vibrant yet fragile. The unmasked—pale, broken remnants of those freed from Shades—wander Estellium’s streets and deprived areas, a testament to the SIC’s prowess and a grim reminder of the danger lurking in every shadow.
