Summary

Under the quiet glow of the moon, a lonely figure stands on a balcony, watching the city below and a mysterious building in the distance. As memories of someone who never came back linger in the empty room behind them, questions about love, hope, and waiting begin to surface. But as the night unfolds and the lights of that distant building finally go dark, the past seems to catch up with the present. Some things are better left unanswered. Some people are harder to forget.

The Redwine

The moonlight shone brightly as the clouds travelled past the moon. I stood by the ledge with a glass of red wine. As I stared at the view, full of twinkling lights, one building, or perhaps, a single floor stood out to me. I wondered what they would be up to. I swirled the liquid in my glass, relishing the coldness that dropped into my skin through the glass.

I looked back at the floor, but there was nothing new, so I shifted my gaze towards the road below. There was traffic and horns that felt unpleasant as well as unreasonable. A hopeless look filled my eyes as I stared at the rush hour. Questions filled my mind: “What did these people have waiting for them that couldn't wait? What is so important? What do they hold so dear? How are they so full of hope? ... Is that what happens when someone is waiting for you?”

I shook my head with resignation and turned my head over my shoulder to glance back at my room one last time. It was empty, the lights were off, and it felt cold as a breeze flew in that swayed the curtain beside the balcony door's window.

A pang of hollowness shot straight into my heart and settled there, accompanying the lump of resignation that was already there. My gaze landed on my bed, the one I always kept made neatly... In case they ever show up, but now, it only lay messy.

My eyes turned cold again as I looked ahead again. I took one last glance at the twinkling lights and took a sip. The chill of the wine on my tongue matched the one in my heart, except the wine gave a tingling and lively sensation.

I pulled the glass away from my lips, half of the liquid remaining. I looked back down, contemplating my life, but then the traffic started to clear. I tried to avoid the building, but I glanced at it anyways. Old habits really die hard, I guess.

But this time, the lights turned off. Their floor looked distant now; it matched their persona towards me. I downed the glass with cold eyes, gulping the wine even though it hurt.

As I finished the drink, I saw a bit of the unfinished portion of the poisoned drink and dropped the glass.
