Episode 1: The Stranger at Midnight
Some people enter your life quietly.
Others arrive like a storm and completely change everything.
For Amara, it happened on a rainy Thursday night.
A night she thought would be ordinary.
A night she would never forget.
Amara sat alone in her small apartment, staring at the clock on the wall. It was 11:47 p.m.
She sighed and closed the book in her hands.
Her best friend had cancelled their plans. Her phone battery was almost dead, and the rain outside showed no sign of stopping.
Thunder rolled across the sky.
“Perfect,” Amara muttered.
She was about to stand when she heard three slow knocks on the door.
Amara froze.
Who would come to her apartment at this hour?
She waited.
Three more knocks followed.
“One minute!”
She walked slowly toward the door and looked through the peephole.
A man stood outside.
He was tall and dressed in a dark jacket that was completely soaked by the rain. His dark hair was wet, and water dripped from his face.
Amara didn’t recognize him.
“Can I help you?” she asked through the door.
The man looked directly at the peephole.
“Amara?”
Her heart skipped.
“How do you know my name?”
“Please. Open the door.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand. I need to talk to you.”
“Then tell me who you are.”
The man hesitated.
“My name is Daniel.”
The name meant nothing to her.
Then he said something that made her grip the door handle.
“I knew your father.”
Amara’s expression changed.
Her father had been dead for six years.
“My father didn’t know you.”
“He did.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Your father left something for you.”
Amara frowned.
“He didn’t leave me anything.”
“He left you a warning.”
“A warning about what?”
Daniel looked over his shoulder.
“Please open the door.”
“I’m calling the police.”
“You can.”
His voice became quieter.
“But if you do, you’ll never learn why your father really died.”
Amara stopped breathing.
“What did you say?”
“Open the door.”
“Tell me first.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because someone is watching this apartment.”
Amara slowly turned toward the window.
Across the street sat a black car beneath a streetlight.
Its engine was running.
Her stomach tightened.
“Daniel…”
“You see it?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t look at it for too long.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever is inside already knows you’re awake.”
A car door opened.
Amara watched a dark figure step out.
“Someone just got out.”
Daniel’s voice became urgent.
“Amara, listen to me carefully.”
“What?”
“Turn off the lights.”
“Why?”
“They’re coming.”
Amara switched off the lights.
Her apartment fell into darkness.
Then she heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Getting closer.
She covered her mouth.
The footsteps stopped outside her door.
Daniel whispered, “Don’t make a sound.”
The door handle began to move.
Amara’s heart pounded.
“Daniel…”
“Stay behind me.”
The handle rattled violently.
Amara stared at him.
“Who are they?”
Daniel looked at her.
“The people who killed your father.”
Before she could respond, the door burst open.
Amara screamed.
Everything happened at once.
Daniel grabbed her hand.
“Run!”
Then the apartment went dark.
